  1. Hey guys, I know I've seen many forums covering this topic (including this one) but I just recently installed the 980m in my M17x R4 with the 120Hz screen. I found an interesting trick that helped tremendously. Just wanted to share in case it may benefit someone else. I won't include all of the steps to the process as those are thoroughly covered elsewhere. Okay, so you have the card (980m) installed but it doesn't recognize it yet (no drivers / need to change bios settings etc.) meaning that you immediately get the 8 beep error on startup. A lot of forums say you need to reinsert your old graphics card to access menus, then switch it back to 980m. I've found that through using the HDMI out and connecting to another screen, it will actually stop the 8 beeps and you regain post. It will post only on your laptop, not the screen connected through HDMI. I believe this is due to the 120Hz not being supported when connected to an external screen, it makes it function as a 60Hz and seems to resolve the 8 beep posting issue making it possible to change your settings and even install the (modified) drivers on the desktop. I hope this helps to ease someone else's process in the future.
  2. Specs: 4900MQ, 16Gb, 980m SLI. I recently upgraded my GPU from 780m SLI to 980m SLI. I am facing performance issues. I had very low passmark 43xx, I mainly play dota 2 and with my 780m sli, i used to get around 120FPS on medium settings. With the new 980m sli i am getting anywhere from 80fps to 30fps on highest settings. And FPS is not stable at all. If i even drop the settings to medium or low I still get the same fps. I got the latest drivers for everything and made sure that SLI is turned on. I am missing anything? Any help would be appreciated.
  3. Can the new Alienware 13" be fitted with a GTX 980M and 4980HQ?
  4. Hi all, I had pretty good success with my GPU upgrade a few months back, although at the same time I realised my battery was on it's last legs. I bought a replacement that I had to send back as it was faulty, but now I have got a working one and it's running very close to the edge in terms of power draw. If I run any heavy GPU benchmarks, or even max out the CPU for any length of time on battery it will just power off in an instant. It's doing this both on Windows and Linux (the latter with the nvidia card completely disabled). I'm running Prema's Mods for both Bios and vBios. Is this something that other people have experienced? Shouldn't the power consumption be scaled back when running on battery just for this reason? Perhaps this is something the prema BIOS turns on/off, but I can't seem to find any other references to this. Any ideas how to manage this? Thanks in advance, Pete
  5. Hi all I just bought two clevo mxm GTX980M for my alienware 18 r3, after install on my laptop and install driver, I found that there is no sli option in driver setting. After I review these two gpus in gpu-z, I found one 980M pci id is 1617, the other one is 13D7. I think this may be the reason that sli cannot be enabled. Anyone knows what should I do to make the sli option work? the 1617 one is from P770 ZM-G with g-sync build in.
  6. Hey all, I have an old P180HM I bought in 2011 that I can play with. What's the fastest graphics card(s) I can drop in there? It currently has 2 x GTX 560M in SLI, a i7-26?? CPU (2.2 GHz max I believe) and 24 GB of RAM in it. I'm fine with the CPU, but wouldn't mind looking at different GPU's if I can get them somewhat cheap. What's the newest/fastest cards I can drop in without major changes to the cooling system? Thanks for any advice.
