    I wouldn't be so sure about that. I've been trying to find out from 750M owners exactly which GPU core it is using but so far no luck because the information has not been released yet. The latest version of GPU-Z, for instance, has all those categories grayed out.

    When AnandTech announced the GeForce 700M series, the chip shot provided to them by Nvidia actually showed the GT 750M to be using a crippled GK106 core. They also mentioned that GK107 and GK208 were also possibilities. Take it with a grain of salt of course but AnandTech has a lot of industry tie-ins and insider access to these major tech companies so their pre-release information is usually more accurate than some of the more gossip-oriented sites.

  2. So with the unlocked BIOS for the Y500. Has anyone gotten a pcie mini card to work? Broadband WWAN anyone?

    I am not seeing any new devices in device manager when I put a Gobi3000 in.

    Maybe there is a card that is easier to get working? Does PCI-E work at all?

    It should work. Have you installed the driver and ensured that wireless LAN is enabled in the BIOS?

    I believe the correct procedure to get third-party WLAN/WWAN cards to work is to first remove the stock Intel WLAN card or disable wireless LAN in the BIOS menu, flash the modded BIOS, and finally install the replacement WLAN/WWAN card and turn wireless LAN back on.

  3. Nice! I knew it would work. Some people have doubted my advice but I've always said that you could remove the mounting bracket from the Ultrabay DVD module and use it on a generic HDD caddy.

    Despite the lack of a front plate it looks like it fits very well and I guess you could live with the appearance. It would be useful if you could provide a link to where you bought this specific caddy.

  4. Yes same direction, it's quite effective, only problem is the noise. I think the unit's fan is not enough to take away the heat from the heatsink..adding an exhaust fan helps a lot. The heatsink is cool to touch now :)

    How are you powering the fan? Do you have it plugged into and running out of your tower which is under the desk? I would very much like to do this myself and am willing to buy another case fan just for this purpose but I'm afraid it would be impractical except when I'm at home, and even then it would need accommodating since my desktop is in another room.

    Yeah 3000 RPM would be pretty noisy. Do you have to run it at its maximum speed to get the full benefit?

The GPUs are basically the same, with the differences being clock speed and the extra bit of voltage that is run through the gt750m to run at said clock speed. slv7 said he would do a vmod for the gt650m Y500s when he gets the chance, so it is only a matter of time until with some tweaking we'll have the same performance as the newer y500s.

    I'm not so sure about that. AnandTech received a pre-release chip shot of the GT 750M and it was using a GK106 GPU core. They said GK208 and GK107 were also possibilities. Since some people have already received their refreshed Y400/Y500 I'm gonna ask them exactly which core is being used.

  6. That might be a vbios issue. I think it should be possible with a modified vbios on the ultra bay card, or in the bios.

    Hey @svl7, would this still be possible if say, the GT 750M used a different GPU core such as GK106 or GK208 rather than GK107 like the 650M? I have read from AnandTech that the 750M could be GK106 and GK208 in addition to GK107. In fact, the chip shot they received from Nvidia showed the GT 750M to be using a "floor sweeper" GK106 chip with too many dysfunctional cores.

  7. That connector has many more pins than a mPCI-E connector. It just happens to have the break in a similar spot to make it look like one.

    It would be suicidal to rely on only an x1 link for SLI like that since the ultrabay GPU would need to send its framebuffer and other synchronization data over PCI-E to the internal card. Adding PCI-E links only requires 4 signals each. The reason PCI-E x16 has so many lines is mainly for power and the motherboard not knowing the capabilities of the card that is being plugged in (an x4 card must work in an x16 slot), but when you know what exactly is going to be plugged in, you can cut out a lot of lines.

    I am guessing that the ultrabay GPU is x8 PCI-E 2.0. Possibly x4 3.0, but I doubt lenovo made a good enough connector for 3.0. You can check if it is or not in GPU-z. Just make sure you do the little render test to make sure the link is fully engaged.

    As for hooking up an eGPU to the slot, you can't without an enormous amount of work and resources. SLI requires 1 card to be a master, and others to be slaves. The BIOS will likely be set up to always treat this slot as a slave. And that is the least of your problems. The main problem would be to somehow design and manufacture your own custom PCB to plug into that slot and wired to a full size PCI-E slot. It takes very good connections to transmit PCI-E 2.0, let alone 3.0.

    You're basically making your own PE4H but without the cables and without any documentation on the pinout of the motherboard connector.

    Thanks for the very informative post. I'd forgotten that mPCIe only goes as high as PCIe 2.0 x1. Being pretty recessed it was kind of hard to make out what kind of slot it was but it sure looked like mPCIe on the surface. But what do I know; I never would've seen the difference in pins.

    Yes the Ultrabay is PCIe 2.0 x8. So you're saying that the Lenovo actually implemented a proprietary slot which is essentially a full-sized PCIe x16 with lines removed to make it x8?

  8. svl7 is right. So a word of warning to everyone who has my BIOS backup or any other BIOS backup not from your system: DON'T FLASH YOUR SYSTEM WITH IT. You'll lose your Windows activation and make it impossible to use and reinstall the OS short of buying another license since someone else is already using that key. You've been warned.

    Furthermore, if you flash someone else's BIOS file, your system essentially becomes their system since you have not only taken their Windows key but also their Lenovo serial number and UUID (universally unique identifier), which are all stored in the BIOS. This will break any software that uses the UUID and will make it difficult for both you and the original owner of that BIOS to take your laptops in for service, since they verify the SN through the BIOS.

    I'm regretting terribly my foolish decision to share my BIOS backup in this thread. I don't know who may have gotten their hands on it or used it to perform the BIOS mod before I took it down. :(

Next two pictures are that the performance show through miniPCI-e connected GTX670 and setting egpu. The key is that I don’t know how to use Ultrabay that connect to the desktop graphics?:48_002:

    The slot looks like mini-PCIe with metal brackets on both ends. Do you own the machine? Maybe you could try an eGPU setup and tell us how it works. I've got no time and money to invest in something like that. I'm perfectly happy with the gaming performance of GT 650M SLI right now.

  12. Much apreciated for your info about GT 750M, but I already answered to the possibility about using nvflash on internal gpu because I tested and the answer is "you can't use nvflash for internal gpu" [at least the version available]

    PS: no need to get angry :) be happy :D:)) - nvidiaInspector has a button which created a nice link for oc to your desired set of oc [at least there was when I first run this app, some time ago, no need to ugly .bat]

    Actually if you don't have the overclocking limit unlocked via BIOS/vBIOS, you have to use the .bat files to overcome the +135 MHz limit on the core.

  13. @octiceps, you seem to have some ideas about these... I think it can be done, but better ask before regret: do you think I could use nvflash the flash the internal and the external gpu ? [i really don't want that graphical modified bios so I don't need the moded bios - I upgraded the sli version of this beast with 512GB SSD sata3 [worked hard to save the $$$ as freelancer so warranty is important to me -and still I hate all these menus, I would enable just a few of them like numlock enable on start]

    can't read/backup[content of rom] using nvflash [tested] so can't write [untested, but fairly sure], it just sees it [tested]

    I'm not the author of this stuff; svl7 is. All I know is that the vBIOS of the internal GPU is part of the BIOS so you have to flash the BIOS in order to mod the vBIOS. I'm getting really tired of this back-and-forth with you. I already provided the BIOS and vBIOS backups and if you're so unsatisfied with the BIOS mods don't use them. You can overclock both GPU's just fine using Nvidia Inspector and .bat files without any firmware modification. That sounds like the best solution for you.

    Some users on NBR have already received their Y400/Y500 with GT 750M. To clear up any confusion, it is still GK107 with core at 967 MHz (1058 with Boost) and memory at 2500 MHz. Voltage is 1.1310 V.

  14. Thanks for that, I was about to open up the ultrabay GPU to see if I can improve the temps. It runs quite a bit hotter than the GPU on the motherboard.

    That's weird. It's the opposite for me: The mainboard GPU usually runs hotter than the Ultrabay one, especially if the CPU is also working at the same time. It makes sense because the Ultrabay GPU is on the other side of the laptop and has its own dedicated cooling system whereas the the main GPU has to share the same fan and copper heatpipe with the CPU. The CPU really runs way too hot for my taste, it gets into the 90 C range in some games.

    Now i am intend to overclock my single gt650m... do i need to flash vbios through dos bootable usbdisk or...no need of flashing anything??

    And which tool do i need to use for overclocking? is nvidiainpector a tool?

    And how can i know the stable clocks...if i uses unstable clocks system may not boot i think...in that case how can i revert back to stock clocks?

    Do you have single GPU or SLI? You need only the modded BIOS if you have single GPU since it already includes the vBIOS unlock for the internal GPU. The separate vBIOS flash is to unlock the OC limit for the Ultrabay GPU and unnecessary if you don't have it.

    Nvidia Inspector is a GPU monitoring and overclocking tool. Another popular one is MSI Afterburner. It really doesn't matter what you use as long as the tool supports your GPU.

    There are tons of overclocking guides out there so Google it. It basically involves bumping up the core and memory clocks individually by small increments, such as 10 MHz, until you experience any instability or graphical corruption. Going too high won't make your system unbootable. The most that can happen is the display driver will crash and recover itself at stock clocks. If you go slow and use small increments that usually won't happen; you'll gradually see freezing and/or artifacts in your 3D app and that's when you know it's time to dial it back a bit. The guides explain it a lot better than we can and I suggest you check them out.

  16. I GOT IT!!! I just noticed your error 104 fix, which fixed all my issues. If I were you, I would add that to the guide as a note, if they come across that error, since it also fixed my problem with making my own back up. Lastly, you might want to make it more obvious that you have to rename to fixed bios from .rom to .bin. Thanks for all your help though!

    Yeah the instructions for the Error 104 fix are buried somewhere near the beginning of this thread not in the OP. Have everything consolidated in one post would be helpful. I've flashed the BIOS and Ultrabay vBIOS on two different Y500 units and never experienced that error so it may not happen to everybody.

    You don't need to rename the fixed BIOS from .rom to .bin. I'm surprised changing the file extension didn't mess up your flash LOL. Use your best judgment when svl7 writes youfilename.bin and your file is a .rom; he's just using that as an example. Can't expect to be spoonfed everything right? :rolleyes:

    @svl7 if I may make a suggestion could you update the OP to include the these important tidbits of information:

    1. Instructions for Error 104 fix
    2. Run fptw64.exe as an administrator from it's Properties>Compatibility when using backup.bat to make a BIOS backup

    It seems that everyone who runs into errors are asking these same questions and it gets awfully repetitive.

    You're just a handful aren't you? ;)

    Don't worry about backing up the vBIOS if you can't get it to work. Here is backup you can download.
