  1. So I went ahead with the upgrade. I managed to find a lot of the answers to my questions in the guide if I looked hard enough and I installed the card according to the guide. I am now experiencing a stability problem. My laptop now crashes and powers down completely. approximately 10min after I power it up. The GPU hasn't gotten hot in anyway and as far as I can tell everything is running fine so I can't see where the problem is. Can you give me some advice? Thanks.

What are the max temps that you saw? There were initial reports of the Dell card shutting down the laptop around 80C-85C but none recently so I assume it was resolved somehow.

My suggestion would be to relook at the card's heatsink installation. Download GPUshark and post up a screenprint of the detailed view so we have more info.

  2. Welcome to T|I Samariton :)

It's not complicated at all. Your motherboard BIOS is not important with regards to the 7970M installation and the stock A10 will accept your card just fine without issue.

What does affect your installation is the model of 7970M. Dell cards like the one you purchased has HDMi sound and video as opposed to the CLEVO card which only has HDMi video. DisplayPort does not work with both cards. Fan control is automated with a CLEVO card and you will have to use HWinfo to control your fans with your Dell card.

You can use the latest drivers from AMD without modification. This has all been covered in various threads though. The most comprehensive of them all is this one which should address all your questions. A lot of the info is geared towards running CrossFire but it covers your needs as well.

  3. Finally, after flashing the last version of the bios, i ve tried to flash my 7970m (note , it's a dell's one) with a vbios found here : [GUIDE] - Blind-Flashing AMD 7970M modded vBIOS for Clevo P1xxHM Laptops.

But when flash was finished, and after reboot, pc works well during 15 sec and then fans come a 100%, bips occured and cpas locks' led and 2 other flashing. and after 20sec of this pc shut down. why?

From my understanding Dell cards dont play nice with CLEVO laptops but I have no knowledge or experience with your particular combination so I could be wrong. My advice would be to try a few different vBIOS's like svl7's Dell version or the CLEVO version used in this thread.

Does this work on the g73jh with 7970m upgrade?

I have no idea, as this vBIOS is based on the CLEVO 7970M. So if your laptop is compatible with the CLEVO card chances are it will work.

  4. You did some pretty good troubleshooting there so there's not much left to be done. Try running the complete memory diagnostic tests on each DIMM separately in the working slot just to be sure.

If you have already done this then the only other thing I can think of is resetting the CMOS. Disconnect the AC, battery and the coin cell battery as well. Press and hold down the power button a couple of times and then leave it for around 10 mins to be sure. Connect everything up again and test.

  5. Alienware M17x R4 Windows 8.1 after replacing the original file I got this warning(a referral was returned from the server.), the program does not work : (I did everything previously written, but I can not change the color of the backlight. Please help

There are issues with Windows 8 and 8.1 with this mod as they do not allow unsigned exe's. Following J95's post above should get you to run it although I have not tested it as I am running Windows 7.

This mod is for changing the icons displayed by the Alienware OSD when pressing a key to activate/de-activate a feature. It is not related to changing the colour of your AlienFX lighting. You will have to use the Alienware Command Center to do that, which should be already installed on your machine.

  6. The M17x R2 is the only model in Alienware's M17x range that is able to use two 7970M's. From the R3 onwards they are designed for only a single MXM graphics card.

The good news is since you're looking specifically for increasing performance in BF4 and your 7970M uses the GCN architecture, there is hope on the horizon. Once AMD releases their Mantle driver and BF4 is updated to support Mantle, you should see a significant increase in performance.

    Read more about this here.

  7. Could you explain that last part about making a great MXM card? Isn't it already MXM (and I assume you meant 7970M instead of 7870M)?

The 7870M was never actually released. It would have been great as it would have been an ideal compromise between power consumption and performance. If I remember correctly, Samsung was the only manufacturer that used that chip in one of their notebooks.

  8. If you're using Chrome as your web browser you could also use the Referer-Control plugin. AMD's site checks who the referer is before downloading, if its not their site you're redirected to that download incomplete page.

After installing the plugin go to Chrome's Settings -> Extensions and click on "options" for the Referer-Control plugin.

Add the line below to the site filter

    http://www2.ati.com/DriverS/mobile/*

Then click on "Custom" and then "Target host". Then set the Referer-Control status to Inactive and Active again and you should be able to download as per normal.

  9. Thanks. I recently tested my 7970M on 3dmark 11. It can barely score 6100 on graphic. I think it is a little bit lower than normal 7970M can achieve. The drive is 13.11beta, bios is 015.022. I heard that Dell bios will decrease the card frequency when the temperature beyond 60C. I assume that is the problem. Will the clevo bios have some improvement?

    Thank again.

I'm not aware of any throttling issue at 60C with the Dell 7970M's on the M18X R2 but you could test easily if that's the case by logging your temps and clocks with GPU-Z while running 3Dmark11.

Although, since the 7970M is a supported card on the M18x R2 I don't think its a vBIOS problem. Do you have a single 7970M? I did test my M17X with one 7970M a while back and it scored +-7000 on stock clocks so there's definitely something going on with your machine.

Hi sir, maybe it's an already asked questions, maybe a stupid one too but i actually own a p370em clevo and i was wondering if it's possible to oc it like the 8970m clocks. I know how to flash it and i'm actually using the Dell vbios for the 7970m cards. I downloaded the vbios pack from svl7 but i'm actually waiting on your reply if it's possible or not. Thanks alot, Louis

If you mean having boost clocks, then no. The 7970M vBIOS does not cater for as far as I know. If you want to increase your 7970M clocks to 8970M boost clocks ie. 900/1250 then yes its absolutely possible. You don't even have to adjust voltage to attain those clocks. The card should be able to run those clocks undervolted at 0.975V safely if you want them to run cooler.

So you can either flash the stock 1050V vBIOS or the 0.975V from the pack under the Normal/Forced folders. Both will have OverDrive enabled for you to adjust your clocks to 900/1250 through CCC. Be sure to read the note I added at the end of the first post so that OverDrive kicks in immediately at boot.

  10. Hi.

A quick question. Can I use it to flash dell 7970m on m18x r2?

    Thanks

Yes it should work as users with Dell 7970M's are using it with the M17X R2. But I'm curious as to why you would want to do that? If you're looking to undervolt or overvolt or maybe overclock a bit you can use svl7's Dell mod pack. If you're looking for specifically for OverDrive you can use svl7's Dell version with OverDrive enabled.

The nice thing about having Overdrive enabled is that apart from being able to change clocks in CCC you can also increase voltage through text editing the OverDrive profile manually.

  11. Thanks for the screenprint. It seems your card is running lower voltage than normal at 1.000V which is a good for temps.

HDMi functionality is card and brand specific. Also remember the 7970M is unsupported in our machines so not everything will be perfectly compatible. For us CLEVO users that means no HDMi audio and no Display Port.

sangemaru is able to have working HDMi audio and video since he has a Dell card but he does not have auto fan control and has to use HWinfo to control the GPU fans. If he doesn't the GPU fans are linked to the CPU fan speeds.

  12. That's great news! :)

Previous vBIOS's that caused damage to our RGB screens had screen anomalies before it actually took out the screen so if you experience any white screens or screens with unusually high levels of brightness then flash the version in my sig.

You can also use my modded vBIOS if you want to overclock as it has OverDrive enabled in CCC which makes it easier to change clocks. Another use is if you want to undervolt to make your cards run cooler at stock clocks.

I know I'm unable to get HDMi audio working with the vBIOS version I'm using so if you're able to, I'd appreciate it if you could test the HDMi audio if possible. Could you take a printscreen of GPUshark in detailed view as I'd like to see what voltage your card is running at in 3D mode. Thanks :)

    Also, update your sig! :D

  13. Did you install the card already? Or are you installing it tonight?

edit: If you can run the card with the vBIOS it came with and see if you experience any problems. The only reason to use my modded vBIOS or the version its based on is if you intend to overclock or you experience any problems with the display. If it boots up fine and you're able to load Windows fine you might want to continue using it as its a newer version than the one my mod is based on.

  14. I would go with the Alienware because of the build quality, cooling performance and Dell's excellent support. There's nothing wrong with a refurbished laptop. I say grab it before someone else does! :D

edit: Also, since you mention access to the internals, I'm assuming you want upgradability, from the past Alienware's seem to be more forgiving when it comes to a different brand of GPU ie. they are able to accept both Dell and CLEVO cards without too much fuss.
