  1. Yeah only the OS... technically its creates an image of the original factory setup from the recovery partition on your drive (oem partition/normal OS partition/recovery partition). So if you had to restore from the discs/usb it will be as if you started it up for the first time after unboxing = no games :)

  2. Not sure if you guys know of this app that ejohnson from the NBR forums found on some russian site. It changes the AlienFX lights colour to match whatever is on your screen. It calculates the average colour that is shown on your screen and sends that colour to the alienFX controller to display.

I've tried it and it works on my M17x R2 except for the power button and alienhead on the lid. Very interesting especially if you have alternating wallpapers with different colours :D Its a bit too distracting if you're watching a movie or playing a game though. Although it will should work well with say a fullscreen visualisation on your fave music player ;)

theHelios also from NBR set it up for us Alienware users and can be downloaded from his private dropbox below.

To see it in action check it on youtube

  3. don't get the dell ssd, its over priced and under performs. after market is the way to go for ssd and ram.

    Couldn't have said it better.

Really? I'd read an article on tomshardware reviewing the Dell SSD (essentially a samsung 470 (aka P810 apparently)) and it said it was pretty solid, with one drawback being higher power consumption. In terms of benchmarks, it seemed middle of the pack which for a vendor drive I figured wasn't too bad (especially when the absolute benchmark times for it were considered).

Couple of things though, if you didn't get the stock SSD which one would you go for?

Will Dell supply me with a disk to reinstall Windows 7 on an SSD when I get around to buying one and fitting it, or do they just give those pointless recovery disks? And what's the risk of installing windows onto a fresh SSD, what about dedicated alienware software & laptop specific drivers etc, would I not need those?

I have the PM810 and its a very good SSD but not worth the price Dell's asking for it. Also since Dell, as usual, puts its own firmware on the drive you cannot upgrade the firmware with Samsungs. Samsung SSD software will not detect your drive as a Samsung drive and there is no method as yet to flash Samsungs firmware onto this drive. I am behind about 2 firmware updates and I cant do a thing about it until Dell releases a firmware update.

Personally I would go for a Crucial M4 or an Intel 510 series if I was in the market.

All Alienware's come with a Windows 7 OEM install disc as well as a disc containing all the drivers/apps. There are no recovery discs, however Alienware has a utility thats installed called AlienRespawn that creates these discs. I highly recommend you create these discs before you do anything else. I don't recommend using the bundled driver disc though. Download all the latest necessary drivers/utilities from dell by searching under your laptop model name.

There is no risk installing on an SSD, all drivers apps are downloadable from Dell and the wallpapers, login screen, avatars, etc can be restored. There is a thread on this forum on how to do just that.

  4. AWESOME!!! hmm would these work for the newer models????

    +rep b00bs approved!!!

Thanks boobman :) Not sure about the newer models. Do you have an ICONs folder with .bmp images under the OSD folder in Program Files? Does the OSD on the R3 the look the same as your old M15x?

btw your avatar is truly inspirational... that said, I have to read your posts pretty quick here at work :P

  5. I've recreated the OSD Icons for the R1/R2/R3/R4 and R5 aka 17 as the standard ones are a bit dated. It should also work with the M15x though as my old M15x had the same setup for the OSD app. Regarding the R3 OSD, it seems its the same install for the M18x as well so it should work for you M18x owners too. I've also added the AW 17 OSD to the list. This exe is also compatible with the 14 and 18 as Dell uses the same OSD for all the new machines. There's also a set for you Area-51 m17 R1 owners.

I've tried to give it a simular feel to the Invader Icon pack by Alienware. Hope you guys like it :)

The Area-51 m17-R1 install should be similar to the steps for the other laptop revisions above. They all basically follow the same process anyway, apart from filenames/paths.

@robby_hd was kind enough to make a red version of these icons for the M17x R3 / M18x R1 which can be downloaded from his post here.

**There seems to be a security issue with Windows 8/8.1 at this point in time since it doesn't allow modified exe's. I will update this post with a solution once it has been found. Also a few Alienware owners are having an issue with the unmodified OSD and Windows 8. Only the default Windows 8 OSD displays and not the Alienware version. Try the solution posted by Dell here and then attempt installing the mod.

The below screenprint is a workaround by editing the security policies to allow the unsigned exe to run in Windows 8. If you are not aware of what these settings do and the repercussions of changing them, please do not attempt it.

    - Open the Group Policy Editor by typing "gpedit.msc" in the search or run text box.

    - Duplicate the settings below.

  6. If you bought those with your Dell they are the right updates... i went to the windows 7 64bit section of the M17x R2 drivers download section for that link... so if you bought those with your alienware then yes... if you bought those and installed them yourself from somewhere else they may not be the drivers for you. If the right drive is not detected the flash doesn't commence...

Its Dell OEM with the firmware from Dell but I bought it separately. I cant flash with the latest Samsung firmware either. Their magician software doesn't detect the drive as Samsung. The current firmware has TRIM enabled and the performance is on par with the tweaks from StamatisX so I'll leave it as it for the time being.

  7. Awesome feedback. Thanks a lot guys I really appreciate it. I've got a little sum'm sum'm I'm working on so that'll be my official "thanks for the help" :P

AssimilatorX, wicked post man. Your original post was bit more in depth than I was looking for but very interesting reading. Thanks for the "3/4 blinking" feedback :)

mw86, dont have many boot options in A10 apart from the boot order. Thanks for the info about the firmware updates. I didn't know the PM800/PM810 firmware was the same. Are you sure about this though? Don't really want to brick the the drive as I did see the updates but didnt consider them as they were for the PM800. The PM810 is the newer retail Samsung 470's.

  8. Yes I'm on A10 at the moment. Its a minor issue but if I can get rid of it or at least reduce the blinks, it would be awesome. If its how this machine works, I don't have much choice really. That's why I'm hoping someone with a R2 can help me out. SSD or normal HDD, just some feedback would help. Thanks.

  9. No one? :(

Timed from the time I pressed the power button to the windows starting screen = 15 secs. I'm trying to reduce the total boot time as much as practically possible but I don't know if there's some way for the BIOS to detect the SSD boot partition/sector quicker.

Its set as the first boot device and that is the only option I can see in the standard BIOS that could help.

  10. I recently installed a OEM PM810(Dell branded 470) 128gb SSD and it's working fantastically well. I'm just curious if fellow R2 owners have a blinking cursor at the top left hand corner of the screen before the "Starting Windows + Logo" appears?

Never really noticed it on my normal HDD but I plugged it back in and its also there but it blinks just once. With the SSD I get 3/4 blinks and then the "Starting Windows + Logo".

  11. gotta say the numbers aren't that impressive.

Vertex 3 240GB outperforms it in every aspect.

Yes, but the Vertex 3 is SATA 3, this is a SATA 2 drive and the R2 is limited to SATA 2.

Im looking to get the fastest drive I can get on SATA 2... whether Im sacrificing reliability with this Runcore is my main concern.

  12. I'm looking to purchase an SSD and I've come across this review on thessdreview.com for a Runcore PRO V drive which according to these guys is nothing short of impressive.

    Runcore PRO V Review

Anybody have any experience with these drives?

Also its sandforce 1200 based. Ive been reading that there are some negatives to these. Its either this or a samsung 470... but I want speeeeeeed!!!!:65:

  13. (in old man voice)

What? did someone say camper?? back when I was a boy in ww2 we had had to walk 5 miles in 4 feet of snow up hill both ways to camp.

I love smores. I remember smokey the bear when he was a cub... He used to eat his own shit...

What time do the damn golden girls come on???...

    lmao, that killed me! :D

28 here and trying to slow down time so I dont hit the big 3 0. Doesnt seem to be working though...
