  1. Hello TI! I recently won this case at Lanwar Newegg.com - Fractal Design Define XL Black Pearl w/ USB 3.0 ATX Full Tower Silent PC Computer Case Wanted to know how to build a computer, figured I should start eventually lol... I know almost nothing about it, so perhaps a list of things I would need to get would be greatly appreciated!
  2. Funny you mention that, because I've been a big fan of the overvolt mod by svl7 lol
  3. Hello everyone, I was wondering if it's possible that the m14x would have GDDR5 graphics in the future. It would be nice to have that kind of power in a small laptop but it may not be exactly feasible. It seems that the only GDDR5 solution is to go with the m17x, but if I decide to buy one, I might as well just buy the m18x since it supports two video cards and it's about the same size. I mean, I dont think there is much difference between the two in size comparisons, and if I have to lug around a big laptop, then I might as well get an m18x. I dont anticipate on buying a new laptop soon, maybe in a few years, but I'm just trying to speculate
  4. widezu: I can only dream, I really don't have the time to tamper with existing software even though the source codes are public. I figured at one point, someone's gonna take it and integrate it with OpenCL Jimbo: That's another route that one of the PowerEdges offered, I'm still weighing out the benefits of each mw86: I mostly operate on two machines, although I have access to 7... One of the machines is a cluster from a supercomputer with 120 threads and ~450gb of RAM. The second one belongs to the medical center I work at which has 160 threads and ~256gb of RAM
  5. widezu69: I need 2+ haha Brian: They don't exist period. The processor that uses the LGA2011 socket can only work with one other processor, it cannot work with more than one other of the same type. StamatisX: They do, but this stuff isn't the high profile stuff (Tesla Bio Workbench) Basically, going to buy a Dell PowerEdge R910, probably buy it with 2Tb of RAM and use all the processor sockets, haven't decided what processor to outfit it with yet... We have a rack already with the older PowerEdge R900, but it's a piece of shit. What also surprises me is that all these softwares are moving away from cluster-computing development to just a single server. I'm really hoping we can get some of the tools we used to operate on CUDA cores. Then I can tell my research professor to get tons of graphics cards (and I can stay late nights and game :3)
  6. Hello all, So, I want to build a desktop with the tremendous amounts of computational performance for my lab. Do you know where I can find motherboards that will support more than 2 processors with LGA2011 sockets? (namely this processor: Xeon E5-2687W) Thanks!
  7. Nvm, I got it fixed Just open up system recovery (Start up, tap f8 until menu appears, then use "repair your computer") Select language, login, blah blah blah Open command prompt from the menu Type "bootrec /fixmbr" Restart ??? Profit
  8. Hello TI, its been a while since I was last here... I recently tried to update the firmware for my hard drive by downloading the drivers from the Dell Driver site. However, when I reboot, there is a loud beep and then a message that says "Non-System Disk - press any key to continue". I press the key and everything is normal. But whenever I want to boot up, it keeps making this very loud and obnoxious beep. Anyone here know how I can fix this? Thanks!
  9. Hi everyone So, I went to type in "3d" in my search bar in the start menu to find 3dmark, and I noticed there was a program called Enable (and Disable) 3D vision... I open it and it takes me to some nvidia set up. Has anyone gotten it to work?
  10. What OS do you run? Added after 4 minutes: Regardless, if you updated, and then had problems with it, then you can always roll back the drivers (I think). Open the Start Menu Right click on "Computer" and then click on "Manage" On to the left panel, click on "Device Manager" On the right panel, expand "Display Adapters" Double click on "Nvidia GeForce GT 555M" Click on the "Driver" Tab Click on "Roll Back Driver" if it is active. Otherwise, if it doesn't work/grayed out, then it probably means that when you installed the drivers for the first time (after re-installing the OS presumably like me), then the first driver you installed on the card was probably a later version of the driver. If that's the case, wait for a bit until a more experienced person helps you out :3 Added after 5 minutes: I just now saw this, but under the "Driver" tab, you have the option to uninstall the driver. You should give that a go and then re-install the driver
  11. Given the prices, the looks of it, and the seller which would you choose? Sorry, I've never shopped eBay before, need some tips lol
  12. Hello everyone I've seen laptops around campus having a cover over their keyboards but they're still able to type (namely VAIOs and MacBooks), and I was wondering if there is something like this for Alienware (and perhaps hopefully still lets some colored light through) Something like this but for the m14x Amazon.com: GTMax Aluminum Unibody Apple MacBook / Pro / Air Silicone Keyboard Skin Cover - Black: Electronics
  13. No, using hibernation has allowed to save me alot of time because I don't have to re-mount my drives with truecrypt. Ever since I started OCing (and crashing), I somewhere along the way lost the ability to hibernate. I will try a system restore, hopefully this will solve the problem. I still cannot get access to the Alien Command Center even after re-installing the drivers found on the dell site
  14. I uploaded to this forum, so it should work now with the second link
  15. So I ran both, and sfc seemed to do alot of repairs, I checked the log files. However, I still have one important issue that needs to be fixed, it is nothing major, but as a college student, it is extremely helpful. Instead of shutting down and starting up whenever I move from class to class (or just in general), I usually put it into hibernation. It basically uses no power, and offers quick startup, so I can take notes immediately. Instead, I have to now boot up completely, and since I use truecrypt more or less for organization instead of security, I have to re-mount all my drives. If ANYONE can fix this hibernation problem, I would be eternally grateful
  16. Alright, mw86, I will start integrating your tips into the guide for rev 3. Thank you everyone! Also, svl7, if you could perhaps create a thread with all the mods for all laptop models, that would be great, so I can point to the page where you have created them. I want to make this guide applicable to all systems
  17. Just reposting from the m14x forum, would like to see if anyone can get the procedures outline in the manual to work with another laptop (just with different numbers). *** Hello everyone, After about 100 hours, extensive fine tuning, benchmarking, re-testing, system crashes (and a possible re-installation of Windows 7), I have finally made a guide that can offer much assistance to overclocking/overvolting as well as reproducible results. Free File Sharing Made Simple - MediaFire That is the folder I saved the document in. There may be more revisions to come. Maybe even another laptop, will see if any of the students in this campus has an Alienware Here is the latest revision, stored in this site: Alienware Overclocking Guide [rev 2].pdf Note: This guide can be used on any laptop given there is the unlocked BIOS for it, the procedures will be the same, the numbers will not. Might want to ask svl7 if you are not overclocking an m14x Raymosrunerx PS: To make life a lot easier, please download the latest revision, I already saw some major errors and pointers I left out in the first revision. I was too eager to post this.
  18. Thanks! Also, to any mod: Can you remove the "M14X R1" from the title? The tips and suggestions (as well as the general procedures) I give in there apply to any alienware laptop for the most part.
  19. I was overclocking and crashing nonstop to figure out the limit of my system as well as a systematic way of increasing. Little did I know that rebooting after each reference clock increase of about 3mhz is required. I crashed at least ~25-35 times until I figured that one out. How would I check to see the integrity of the OS and filesystem? Just those two commands? I will give it a go

  21. Windows 7, nvidia gt555m. Its always worked in the past, no hassle, nothing that I had to wrestle with. It just suddenly stopped. I may consider re-installing the OS, after may failed overclocks and system crashes, I've started finding that alot of other programs are being affected as well... Like Alien Command Center started freaking out on me and just refused to work... After I write this guide, I'll probably reset my system. I may consider using MSI Afterburner and see if that works. What overclocking software do you use for GPU?
  22. Hello all, It's been a while since I've been on here; I've been working hard writing a step-by-step manual on how to overclock/overvolt the RAM, GPU, and CPU. However, while writing the guide, I realized that EVGA Precision is not overclocking my GPU. I try and set the clock rates, but it is not applying, when it use to. Thanks!
