  1. The router started lagging again (dropping connections, high latency etc.) so just flashed to OpenWRT, this time "NA" version - and it works! It seems it works a bit smoother now, but I will give it a day before I am sure it works better. This firmware is much more responsive than the stock one too.
  2. Yes, but it's not the oldest one. The first one (release 1) had Intel dual-core CPUs, the release 2 had first-gen core-i CPUs, the third release should be based on second-gen core-i CPUs (Sandy Bridge).
  3. Yeah, I'd even consider it a weapon after it enter self-destruct mode.
  4. Thanks! I am gathering my strength now after this epic battle, for round two. Btw, the stock firmware looks like it was made by a 10 year old boy, 10 years ago. I get about 9-10MB/s on WiFi now. Then I remembered I forgot to order a Gbit NIC, so that will be coming next week. I actually planned to flash openwrt-northamerica but then my gf decided to come in so I just left it. I think I downloaded the wrong openwrt so maybe that's why it didn't work - I didn't know "North America" has a special firmware. I flashed it and then it just didn't want to connect to the internet. Since it works now, the plan for this weekend is to do the Ashtefere's M17x cooling mod (got both paste now) and do my taxes. P.S. I already got it completely covered in fingerprints. I wonder whos brilliant idea is to start making all electronics glossy?
  5. lol.... isn't it a (little) too heavy to have it in bed?
  6. I seriously hope M14x won't have the "peeling" problem like M17x-R3. I don't get it - its not like there aren't tons of laptops (even Dell) that have decent coating. Even some rubberized plastic will be fine if they put decent support underneath. The shiny surface on M11x is very prone to scratching.
  7. Running IGP on M18x is equivalent to sacrilege. Seriously. I'll pass on M18x, but I'll try to either exchange my broken M11x and/or pay extra for M14x which I'll most likely sell afterwards. I don't think it can even hold candle to M17x.
  8. Eh I got tons of problems with this router. Serial number is also missing from below (?!) so I can't login to the netgear website to download the stock firmware. -.- EDIT: After some interesting black magic, I got the some older stock firmware back. Now it seems the speeds and connection are decent.
  9. How do you watch the movies? My fans crank up only when I am gaming. (I watched 1080p movies and the fans were running like usual - I think at 30% of the max RPM).
  10. As I found out - if you don't play games, there are much MUCH better laptops than M11x.
  11. Great, thanks! I just received both of my Arctic Silver pastes so hopefully I'll have some time to play with it this weekend. I still have to do taxes. -.-
  12. It does sound pricey. But keep in mind that you are getting an equivalent of a pretty good desktop performance, with all the newest features. Whether you actually *need* it over M17x-R2 that's a different matter. But if you're replacing an old computer - why not?
  13. I think someone tried that with M11x on NBR and the rep gave him a joke of a discount (10% or something) for 20-30 units or so. I got the same discount through EPP and coupons so didn't see any point.
  14. Great, thanks! I am actually also looking for a way to override default fan settings. I thought that was also the feature of the modded BIOS? (I remember reading somewhere around here that the manual fan setup exists but I can't find it now.) I'll do the Ashtere's cooling mod and was hoping the laptop could run more quiet when I am just surfing and not doing anything too CPU/GPU heavy. My idle temps for CPU/GPU are in 30-40C range with fans always at min working @ 30%.
  15. My guess would be it's hard to cool down any graphic beast if you go with thin factor in mind. I wouldn't mind thick, if it can be made lighter. It just seems way too heavy imo. M11x is too heavy too in that respect. I know it's not a good comparison, but if you compare to Thinkpads which lack dedicated GPU you have T420 @ 4.3lbs (vs M14x @ 7 lbs) and X220 @ 3.3-3.8 lbs (vs M11x @ 5lbs). I do agree - something portable but still relatively powerful and well built.
  16. "...M14x starting weight of less than 7 pounds..." Should I be impressed by it or what? It IS a 14" laptop afterall...

    Monitors

M17x-R2: RGB LED. My favorite and the reason I am happy every morning I get online and look at pretty colors! Thinkpad X200 tablet: Samsung PVA Superbright Outdoor Viewable LED Desktop in the office: Dell SE198WFPV 19" matte @ 1440x900 (Yes, that's correct! ) and surprisingly decent color reproduction. Decent monitor otherwise but pretty poor in comparison to my laptop screens. I bought it when I came to US and had no clue about different screens. Also, I'd prefer 4:3 19" any day for office work tho.
  18. I used 2G for about 1.5 years when I lived in NYC, then gave it to my sister when I moved. It's a neat device, but I found out I'd rather spend $60 per month on something else. The nuisances were jailbraking it over and over after every patch, apps stopped working with new patches, breaking an arm and leg to enable tethering etc. I saw iPhone4 and the screen is really great. A bit better than iPad2 due to the screen resolution. I guess the problem is that you'd hold iPad closer than your typical laptop and then the low-res screen starts to bother a little. I think it's a nice device with a great screen, but the only features I'd find useful is the phone, text messaging (I use Google Phone and my office phone instead with a MUCH lower cost) and mp3 player (I have a $30 one that just works so much better due to being able just c/p the mp3s).
  19. Hey guys, I see people here have a modded BIOS A10. Where did you get that from?
  20. Haha... wouldn't it be hillarious if people started received theirs with engraved nicknames of other folks here.
  21. I remember there was a "leak" of iPhone6 somewhere online too - I saw a pic with a keyboard.
  22. Except the RGB LED, I got the impression that their screens aren't that special. The thing they put on M11x is the worst one. Plus, matte option will still stay wishful thinking I guess.
