  1. Hey, StevenX, hope you stick around. EDIT: Another refugee lol.
  2. The Thinkpad keyboard is top notch too. Also it has some form of UEFI option in the BIOS. (I thought UEFI is a BIOS replacement?) People claim you can get ~20 sec boot from the Power on with some basic tweaks on T420: T420 + mSata + UEFI ONLY = 20 SEC BOOT The tablet version (X220 tablet) also has an option of IPS + damage-resistant Gorilla glass . I'd welcome to see improvements like that on Alienware series too. But I guess first things first. Ditch the shit screen, Dell. Seriously.
  3. The way their pricing is going, if you opt for M18x with GTX 580M SLI, 2% of that might just do the trick for that.
  4. Forgot to say 1 con: it can only fit 7mm drive apparently, so there is quite a limited choice in that respect. One can of course go with the mSATA SSD but they are somewhat slower and more expensive.
  5. Yeah I agree, it has some fancy hardware (screen and flash memory for one). Also it can be turned on really fast (vs a laptop, even with SSD); that's a very useful feature. I just don't think I could justify buying myself one. I'd rather keep a conventional tablet laptop.
  6. So the same screen pretty much that was on M11x. Absolutely mind-boggling- XPS series meanwhile comes with B+RG LED screen. $1200 as a starting price WAY overpriced TBH for M14x, especially because the stock screen has the same resolution as M11x. Really wtf.... have fun enjoying your good performance on M11x screen and M17x-R3 build quality. -.- Also, I noticed the checkbox on Antiglare for M11x. If that's what they mean by ANTI-glare (the screen is btw, as glossy as a mirror) do we really want to know what their glossy screens are like?
  7. I took it off friend's friend's facebook. You can even see my sloppy cropping at the edge. ^^
  8. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aBaX9GPSaQ&feature=feedlik I love simpsons.
  9. Screen is pretty kickass, ha? Responsiveness for multitouch is amazing.
  10. X220 - no brainer. It pretty much demolishes any other non-gaming laptop. - IPS screen - Sandy Bridge CPU + new IGP that can run some games (~4K 3DMark06) - USB 3.0 - mSATA HD option - slice battery - dock - superb build quality - very light - quiet and runs cool - Expresscard for Vi-dock - trackpoint - replacement parts really easy to get I guess you could complain about screen res if you're picky. T420 is supposedly not too bad either, it just comes with regular (14") screen.
  11. Don't worry about that. You can check it's 5870 in GPU-Z. I think it says "5800 series" in my Device manager too.
  12. I think the problem on the Dell website is it asks you once whether you want to download with the browser or using their moronic download manager. Like me, you've fallen for another one of their classic pranks (BAZINGA!). Clear the Dell cookies in the browser and try to download again. P.S. Thanks for the update on > 4GB drives. I burned the DVD anyway - I think that was the second time in last 2 years I actually used the optical drive on M17x. First time was to copy Win install on USB key.
  13. $900 extra for 6970 lol. The base price is fine imo, but the components you get for that price suck. So ummm.... what kind of screen does it have?
  14. I don't know whether this is funny, but I thought it was interesting nevertheless
  15. Plus with the Precision, you get access with their Business support ? (> their consumer 'support') The weight is quite a bit less than M17x (R2) too. IPS RGB LED? Yes please. Funny... it turns out business owner have much better eyes and can distinguish between WLED and RGB LED.
  16. OK, so I think I didn't really get the retention mod properly. So, the idea behind taking off c-clips is to move them a little higher? (So you can tighten a screw a little more?) Btw, there's 1 RAM chip that's not completely covered by the heatsink. What's up with that, Dell? Oh and I used thin precision screwdrivers to tighten the heatsink and the retention brackets. Its harder to put too much pressure with those.
  17. @Ashtere, Hey, I just did this mod. With HWInfo32 after this mod I still get pretty high temps (95/96C on GPU Core/Memory). EDIT: Holy crap. I forgot to do the duct tape mod. This mod alone lowered the temp by 10 C !!! Right now Furmark is running at ~86-89 C steadily but with fans on highest. EDIT2: Could you please provide better resolution screenshot of Furmark? I'll be uploading mine in a few mins. EDIT3: Furmark run w/ monitoring:
  18. $250 is a great price, I'd take it.
  19. Just installed Gigabit LAN on my desktop: Newegg.com - Intel EXPI9301CTBLK 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI-Express Network Adapter 1 x RJ45 It feels SOOO much smoother on the Remote Desktop than on the crappy 100mbit that I had on the motherboard. Wired speeds 100-120MB/s, WiFi is steadily pushing 15MB/s on 5GHz band (and about 9-10MB/s on 2.5GHz). Connections are now rock solid with WNDR3700v2. <3
  20. Well I don't know... on the first one nothing would connect, not even Skype. I thought this one was bad too, but then I noticed 'Hey how in the world can Skype connect'.... I even chatted on Skype nicely when everything else was offline. That was a puzzling thing. I would rather keep this one though. It has a 1 year (vs 30 day) warranty, it's not scratched (the other one was) and it has it's own serial number. Now, the last piece of the puzzle I forgot - 1GBit network card for my desktop server. (Yeah imagine that - the onboard nic is only 100mbit..... cheapo dell inspiron)
  21. Yeah. But OK, I finally got it working! As per suggestion from the guy at Netgear forums, I had to add router's mac address to the DMZ of the modem, as well as disable WiFi, NAT and DHCP on the modem. Then I added the static IP address on the router, as long as all the other settings: gateway, DNS, etc. And NOW FINALLY it works snappy !!! Oh yeah..... ! It's so fast!
  22. DHCP. Yeah it's odd. I spoke too soon tho... even as an access point I can't get this to work. The interesting part is that Skype connects, but I can't get anything else to connect. It is odd.... this is the new one. EDIT: If I disable NAT on the cable modem you can access the internet fine from a single laptop - and works equally fine (the ISP IP is static but is obtained through DHCP and doesn't seem to be locked to particular MAC address; I tried playing with those too). If I try to connect WNDR3700 instead of a laptop (with cable modem/router NAT off) it doesn't seem to connect. If I set WNDR3700 to static IP and setup DNS servers and so manually, it can check for new firmware (running on stock now) - so I assumed the router is actually connected but the LAN isn't. However I couldn't get the LAN/WLAN working this way. Then I set it up as Access Point (connected internet connection in one of the LAN spots) and it worked fine in the evening but when I woke up you can't access anything except for Skype (?!). I'll try to pop the question on some expert networking forum, once I find one.
