  1. i5 should be fine with the sl7 bios.

it's us with the newest i7's that have problems

Well hold on. I'm not quite sure that's the case. Since I doubt it's the cpu as such as to why it bricks. I think its a hardware revision that came about adding a windows 8 key to the machine which bricks the devices upon flashing the mod. But since the newer i7 3630qm only gets sold with windows 8, many like my self used that to tell whether you could flash the mod or not. But the notebook obviously gets sold with i5 versions as well.

Tl;DR; If you've bought your inspiron 7720 (17r-se) with windows 8 chances are you will brick your notebook with both svl as the Russian mod.

  2. yeah, please link to the original thread.

i also don´t understand that some guy´s have problems. i dont know about the 3630QM problem, because i have a 3610QM,but i run the modded bios by SVL7 since he released ist and it works pretty good on my notebook. no unstable problems with the 970 mhz clock speed.

i think ist maybe because the notebook is getting to hot.

dell is using really bad heatsink paste... i opened up my inspiron and change it carefully with the arctic MX-4 and now the CPU is about 15 degrees cooler. also the GPU has 6-7 ° less with it. i also using a cooling pad under my notebook(coolermaster notepal U3) and i getting arround 70-72 ° at my GPU and 75-79° CPU(with boost) while i´m playing battlefield 3. the temp´s are stable and doesnt increase,i sometimes play 3-5 hours.

    @svl7

i send you a message a few day´s ago. please respond if the donate findig it´s way to you ;):D

Temps are not to blame here, I'm still running it at 970 atm, just without the bios mod. Meaning after every cold boot i have to reseat the battery to ''reset'' the gpu lock. And it doesnt get to hot when stressing the gpu. Even when stressing both the cpu and gpu it manages to cool itself enough (it does get quite loud though)

  3. same issue here. temps were fine after flash (about 30 mins of ss3, not more than around 80) , boot after first real shutdown failed. i'd wonder if gpu was responsible. didn't get original bios flashed back so only solution for me was change of mb...

I'm starting to feel its a revision thing, did you get your 17r se with the cpu i7 3630qm (or that was at least the default i7 cpu at time of purchase?) instead of the earlier 3610. Obviously i doubt the cpu change is what made it fail, but perhaps the MB has had a silent change/update along with the cpu bump as well? Either way I'd recommend not using the mod if you've bought your 7720 recently.

  4. svl7 mod, the latest one with the 970 clock. Just that the symptoms are the same as those who have used the Russian one.

A bios can't just be 'dead'. You can have a bad flash, and then it won't work, but you can't flash a bios, then have your system running and then the bios goes magically bad... Unless your bios chip got hit by some radiation from space which flipped some bits, lol.

Seriously, this can't be a bios issue, else it wouldn't have worked in the first place.

Yeah i understand, with the dead part i was simply referring to a bad flash resulting in a ''dead'' laptop. I just thought maybe because i rebooted, rather than power down the NB and then power on it may have not actually been using the new bios. Although i already felt like it was a long shot simply because i had furmark running for 10 min at 970 clock just fine. I'm just trying to understand as to why its happening at this point.

  5. Well, if your system was running fine with the mod then it can't be a bad bios flash. Else it wouldn't have booted in the first place. I'd say there's something wrong hardware-wise. As you're still under warranty just contact Dell.

Thats what i thought as well at first, but with a reboot the system doesnt fully power down. And the symptoms just scream ''dead'' bios to me. And it looks a lot like the story from a few pages back regarding the russian mod.

edit: would removing cmos for a sec help?, does the notebook even have one to begin with actually..? i have informed dell, but obviously rather not send it back.

  6. Well, i have tried several methods as to recovering the bios, but the dell uses an uefi i believe, so pretty sure it those methods wouldn't ever work. Read something about naming the rom file BIOS.CAP and then have it on a usb drive, while powering up holding fn and esc. However none of the options seemed to yield any results. So atm in the dark here, also as to why it seems to be fine for others where as for me it seemed to have bricked my machine.

  7. Got my copy of bl2 with a nvidia gpu, and loved it since. Finished bl1 on the xbox with a mate a year ago, and was wuite fond of it back then. A lot more now (always more of a pc guy anyways). Got two characters, lvl 27 gunner and 16 siren. Like bl1 i feel the siren is an absolute beast in the game, although somewhat mellowed down. Overall a very good game, absolutely gorgeous music and scenery, with a lot of action kicked in.
