That's not the case. Like I said, the laptop and the PSU both turn off about 5 seconds after powering on.

The 450W PSU is more than powerful to power the ancient video cards I used for testing, NVidia and ATI.

My only guess is the issue mentioned in early pages of this thread, where Y500 had some sort of difference with Y510p with regards to the SMBus, which caused it to reject any video card and shut off. Albeit the shut off happens in 40 seconds in that case, not 5. There was a bios fix provided for that, but I cannot verify whether it works since my BIOS isn't standard, so I need to find a way to first roll it back to the standard BIOS before flashing it with the svl7 BIOS with the hotfix.

Yeah, I’ve encountered some cases where the mod fails to work. In which case you still need the bios patch to get that to work.(p.s. vanilla y400/500 will reject any GPU regardless of the vendor. Accepting AMD card by default only happens on y410p/510p

So is there any way to get the adapter to work with Y500?

I think there was a mention of a specific BIOS version required, and an image provided. Having the svl7 bios I am not sure if I flush anything else on top of it.

You should just plug that into your laptop, install PSU and GPU to it, and it should just work.(The latest version has an hardware mod present on the adapter so the firmware patch is no longer needed.)

    Hi all,

Congratulations on this great project, which I am only discovering now (so late)

That may be the chance to revive my 510p and come back to gaming !

Is there a way to buy an extender new or used ?

    PM welcome

I still have quite a few of those. You can contact me at [email protected]

    Hello,

That's wonderful, which version of the board do you have?

I am not a native (or any other sort) Chinese speaker, so installing QQ is a bit of a pain (also it appears to insta-block me from trying to register). Do you have any other method of communication?

    Hmmm...It's just an email address.

I do speak a bit of English(I hope so) So don't worry about language I guess?

I can send the pic of the board by email

Hello everyone, looks like I'm at least 5 years too late for party.

Does anyone know where I can either find one to buy, or at least find the original schematics so I can print my own?

    Thank you.

Hi. I still have a few in stock. If you are still interested, plz contact me at [email protected]

I tryed having the GT755 disabled and I tryed having it uninstalled, and that doesn't help. The GT755 always comes back after and reinstalls automatically when I reboot the computer.

Anyone else encountered this problem and have a solution for it?

Actually I believe there's an option in the (patched?) BIOS and choose 'UMA only' will disable the internal GT755 for you. (I cannot recall the name of that option for now...

P.S. I don't know if PCIe 4.0 GPU work with this adapter. If not - upper limit will be... Titan V\Radeon VII? =)

Though you likely will not benefit from PCIe 4.0, but PCIe is backward-compatible, which means you should have no problems running these systems with the latest and greatest cards.

@Swung Huang Thanks! Maybe I will reach out just to see how feasible that is .. but on the top of it, I would honestly rather use the m.2/mPCIe slot as I absolutely need my HDD for work. Can't have the 1TB only as an external hdd. Which has been my biggest problem really, while this laptop isn't anywhere near a mid/top tier gaming PC .. it's right up there when it comes to basic/work functions - why I haven't had the heart to discard it ie.

So yeah, even if I can get a LUA - because that means removing the connected HDD, it's not an option for me. Any help that you can give me about using the free m.2/mPCIe slot in my laptop would be great (identifying which it is, best compatible GPUs - since I'll only be able to use a 1x 4gbps slot etc)

    Thanks again!

I dunno what do you mean by “as an external HDD”

do you mean that it occupies a USB port or it’s dangling around?

The LBA adapter has the SATA port from the ODD rerouted to the outside so you can still attach your HDD.

    Hi All!

Firstly, it's so nice to see that the y510p (and others before and after in this series) community is still active and trying to get the most of these old, but gold, laptops.  I've been toying with the idea of an eGPU for over 3 years now and have finally decided to give it a shot.

My PC specs (just so were on the same page):

    - Boot Drive: 256GB Samsung EVO SSD

    - Optical Drive: 1TB Seagate HDD (moved the original boot drive to my optical drive while upgrading to an SSD. My laptop did not have the Ultrabay/Dual graphics)

    - Processor & dGPU: i7 4700MQ, nvidia GT755m

Since the external adapter is no longer an option to buy and I've got my Ultrabay running an additional 1TB HDD, I only want to use the other options available to me - the free m.2 (ngff)/mPCIe slot. I haven't seen much talk about these slots being used, I take it because they're not nearly as powerful for the use case as using the Ultrabay would be.
However, if anyone can direct me towards someone/resources that have taken this approach that would be immense! (Both publised builds on egpuDOTio leverage the LUA)

I have a few questions, sorry if I sound like I'm just getting into all this, because I am and the various conflicting information is really throwing me off:

    - Can you point me towards where I can find out for sure whether the free port in my laptop is an m.2 (ngff) slot or an mPCIe slot? I've seen different places on Lenovo forums and other official documentation use either of the terms. While some people on forums also use/quote either.

    - How does one go about choosing which connector to use - EXP GDC vs PCE164p vs ADT (eGPU .io link - https://***********/best-egpu-buyers-guide/#m2-interface)?

    - How did you narrow on which GPU to use? Is there an upper limit to the type of cards that would work with my(our) laptops? What is the safest bet, while getting the best possible results?

Additionally, anything else that you can tell me would be of value. Thanks in advance people, you are all truly superheroes!

actually it’s still available to buy(I still have a few) but the shipping or so may not worth it. It does have the optical SATA port routed outside so if you have external hard drive it got you covered.

My power supply is ready.  Won't let me upload a picture, but I think it's going to work well.  Ended up going with a Dell DA-2 and PicoPSU. @Swung Huang's ultrabay adapter might arrive tomorrow if the weather holds, so getting excited for a weekend project. Does the atx connector on the adapter work the same as on a motherboard? Specifically, does the power on pin work for signalling the power supply?

Yep. The ATX connector on the board pinned exactly the same as the standard.. But a minor thing to notice, it’s a 20pin, not 24pin. If your 24pin is actually 20+4pin detachable, then you’re good. Or you may need to cut the connector or just jam that in there and hang the extra 4pin around

I'm looking forward to adding a y400 (and Ultrabay Adapter "enclosure") build to the *********** list.  I got @Swung Huang paid today, then stumbled across a 1050 ti 4GB at Goodwill for $100, which bottleneck calculator has as a near perfect 4k match for my CPU https://pc-builds.com/calculator/Core_i7-3630QM/GeForce_GTX_1050_Ti/0ni0VZlu/8/100/.  I'm feeling optimistic about the project, particularly thanks to Swung having done a y400 build and @rusTORK having done a y500 build with awesome documentation.  I swear waiting for this thing to arrive is going to be worse than waiting for the Sgt. Slaughter mail away G.I. Joe when I was a kid!

Tom's has the 1050 ti at 75W.  https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388.html What do you recommend for power supplies for this card?

    Thanks everyone!

I have a feeling I'm going to be disappointed if I ever get around to trying an eGPU with an EXP GDC on my Y50-70.

Actually, if you are going to eventually build a new, proper PC, then you may not think of bottlenecking. You'd better think of what PSU will your next PC need. So that you can reuse the PSU without extra cost or save you from flipping hassle.

You can also do that to your GPU selection. But that don't quite apply to that, for power supply pretty much won't evolve over time while GPU does get beefier and beefier, resulting to a low price to performance ratio at that time. Just a hint :)

Actually I don't think you were the guy I was referring to but even if you're someone else I appreciate that you have experience in this matter :). I specifically was hoping to tear down the dlls and find the call that the energy management app makes to the EC to make it do a dust cleaning. If that is the best we can do it is still preferable to me than using a screen scraper app to press the "dust cleaning" button. Any control granularity found that is better than that would be a bonus.

The fan control program you might be interested in.

    Hi. @Swung Huang

Can we buy this version with HDD yet?

Nope. It's no longer produced. The latest version of the board is still going. It features a chip to handle SMBUS signal and also a SATA port routed from the optical drive. But it does not come with a case.

You mean with V8.0 EXP GDC PCI-E Video Card Dock Laptop External adapter??

This thread is never talking about EXP GDC... And plz do not confuse the ultrabay adapter with EXC GDC. it really has nothing to do with it.

The program is extremely simple. If I recall correctly, it just replies to a certain read on i2c bus with some arbitrary value which was supposed to represent the temperature. You can easily get an attiny25 or even attiny10 to do this, no need for Arduino environment at all.

What @Swung Huang has then discovered is that you can get actual i2c temperature sensors (e.g. TMP175 from Ti) which can be configured to the right address and happen to have the right register in the right place for the PC to be able to read temperature without the need for a microcontroller at all. But it seems like he had some troubles with it not working on some PCs?

Maybe there’s different addresses or even mechanisms out there?...

I have configured it to do the exact same thing but to report a real temp from that  sensor. The point is I think there’s some different logic out there. It seems the logic doesn’t apply to all of the laptops. Speaking of chance, it’s about 1 out of 10 that the hardware trick doesn’t work.

@High_Voltage, would it be possible to release the source code for your hardware mod? I only see a precompiled binary. I want to implement it on the board but since it only requires 2 GPIO pins, it might make more sense to use an ATTiny 25 rather than a whole ATMega328P. I haven't played with Arduino-type hardware much so it'll be interesting to see how to effectively program a barebones microprocessor like that.

I have rebuilt the ultrabay connector footprint in Circuitmaker and have the basic schematic done for the interface board, based off of the Gerald v2 schematic plus the v3 mod. I am still going to download KiCAD eventually but so far I just haven't bothered yet.The only thing I'm missing is the SMBUS stuff because, well, as I said I don't think baking in a whole arduino makes sense. Once this is worked out I can start playing with the layout.

And for you people out there who want a cabled version, I am first going to try to replicate the Gerald board, and once that design is working I don't mind trying out an OCuLink version or integrating with the High_Voltage cabled project for fun. :) That's a ways away (but you can always fork my project!)

For the hardware mod, actually you can use a SMBus/I2C temperature sensor from TI. But I currently don't know the exact intercompatibility info. I got some report that the chip doesn't work with their laptop. I don't know for sure which could work at this point.

    Hey @Swung Huang,

first: thanks alot for your effort!

second: is there any chance to get the second adapter with the cable connection? Because i would be able to put it in a case with my graphic card and it would be much easier to carry. I'm now stuck with the GDC-beast Adapter and i would love to get the full potential of my GTX 1080. Could you tell me, what will it cost or is it too time-consuming for you to build?

    Thank you!

Also you can actually use a PCIe riser cable to do what you want.
