House of Cards, Community, Arrow (and potentially Flash and Gotham starting soon) Game of Thrones, Tyrant. I also watch some regular stuff like Bones, Criminal Minds, Mentalist etc. Graceland and Suits are also good.

I asked Prema about the 780m's and yes he told me they would be plug and play. My P377SM barebones is coming on Monday and I'll be putting GTX 780m's in them. As it happens though, I am flush with 780m's (I have somehow ended up with 4 of them) and I have a pair of spares should you wish to buy some.

So in the future EM series might work the 780M? Would it be worth the price to upgrade from the 680m to it? If the 780M gets support from his custom bios would it possible in the future to see the 800 series in the EM?
Seeing as they are the same chip, I have high hopes that the 880m will work. Just give it some time. Prema will update us when he can.

Prema is currently on holiday but I did ask him about this and he definitel hasn't forgotten about it. It is in the works. Just hold off a few more weeks.

The hope was to run games and movies via wihd using the gtx 680 only which is not possible on the r4. If you are running wihd you must be using onboard intel graphics card which is not comparable to gtx 680m for performance. If you are not convinced ,use your f7 key to change to the NVidia card and you will see that wihd will not work.
Ah it is as I suspected. You technically aren't running on the dedicated GPU. I have the 120hz version I don't have switchable graphics which means I'm stuck on my GPU which is not compatible with WiHD in the R4. Thanks for confirming that!

So Alienware Rep was wrong. I've had my Alienware m17xR4 working with the WiHD technology from the m18xR2. I have the nvidia 680m as well. I've been using it for almost 2 years.
Tell me more! What bios are you using and what LCD screen version do you have?
-
It does not exist and no, the 18 version doest not fit in the 17.

It is to do with the GPU. I haven't isolated the cause of the beep but I have experienced it. Changing of thermal pads solved the issue for me but your mileage may vary.

I had just today reviewed your comments on notebook forum and I was hoping to contact you. I installed the card and antenna mentioned today and first all booted but my wireless connection would not work. When I rebooted I got black screen and seven beeps. I rebooted several times with black screen and 7 beeps and have come to the same conclusion . I am going to attempt to contact sibeam /silicon image to see what they have to say but It will be in vain no doubt. Dell gave me a parts list for r3 saying r3 parts would work but after following what little is out their on the subject I don't believe r3 parts are compatible with Ivybridge/
3rd gen cpus. Would you please confirm that you have tried r3 parts for this and that they will not work ?
I have tried R3 parts which are Sibeam Gen2 and even the R4 parts - Sibeam Gen3 which came out when the R4 was first released but quickly pulled. I have tried every combination I can think of with no luck whatsoever. I messaged an Alienware rep (a reputable one) who informed me that with their testing, they have never gotten WiHD to work on an R4 with an nvidia card.
-
I have tried this. It won't work with nvidia cards. It may work with AMD cards and Intel but I have never got it to work in my laptop. It will however work perfectly in a M17x R3 with any GPU.

I have my chips at 1.65v constantly in order to achieve 1866Mhz CL9. I don't get as good transfer speeds but my latency is in the 40s.

That's amazing. Is it stable at 1500Mhz on the mem?

Yes, but only per hardware mod.
I understand. I'll probably leave it at 5Gbps the whole time I use it. Still though, 8GB of GDDR5! What game would max that out at 1080p?! Was the 3DMark 11 run at 1100Mhz fully stable? That's close to GTX 680 Classified territory.
Can you please tell me what is the voltage of your GTX 780M 1GHz ? The card is Unigen 3D stable ?Well it's a bit weird. I've owned 3 GTX 780m's, all from Dell with green PCB. First one was plum, can go 1Ghz with a single bump to the voltage. The next two cards were all pretty bad unable to sustain 1Ghz for very long on any voltage, perhaps one loop of heaven before crashing. I'm not too fussed.

Hynix, rated for 5.0 Gbps @ 1.35V respectively 6.0Gbps @ 1.5V.
When you say 5.0 Gbps @1.35v and 6.0 Gbps @1.5v, does that mean we may have a way of changing the voltage for the memory like for the core?
-
I'll take one. PM'd. @svl7 are you getting yourself one? If not I'll send you a vbios dump and see if you can perform your Kepler unlock on it.

What does revision 2 of the GTX 780m bios bring? I can't see a changelog.
-
So lemme get this straight: install OS etc with previous GPU, install audio drivers. Verify audio is working. Then disable audio chip in bios. Install 780m. Boot into windows and install nvidia drivers, then enable IDT in the bios and everything would be working right?
-
I'm thinking of going back to Sandy Bridge. We should have done a swap!
-
That's good to know. I'm on a R4 at the moment but my favourite machine was still the R3. To me it was a more refined machine especially with the unlocked bios. Control of spread spectrum, bclk speeds and actually to my ears, better sound from the integrated IDT sound chip compared to the dedicated SoundBlaster sound chip in the R4 and WiHD actually working with nvidia GPUs. Thinking of downgrading actually.

Razer Blade 14 and a Alienware 14 plus some tools. Crack open both display assemblies, take the IPS display from the AW 14 and put it into the RzB 14, repaste, etc. My perfect road warrior made.
Going the route of desktop replacement - I'm not the biggest fan of dual GPUs so actually it would be the M17x R3 with modded bios, 2920xm/2960xm, and Quadro K5100m (not 780m because of compatibility issues with audio) plus WiHD. 3D version because the display used in the non-lightboost 120Hz display has the best overall RGB coverage and the Sandy Bridge Mobo is the last of the Alienware laptops to have WiHD no matter what GPU you have. This would serve as my workstation and server.
Finally, the gaming laptop...the one in my sig

How come the row of capacitors and the ones on the right don't need to be padded?

Must have missed this. Why was the GTX 780m vbios revised? Just curious.

I find with BBC iPlayer it's reasonably synced. A few dropped frames here but nothing to worry about. As for films, guess you can look into MadVR, it has an exclusive mode (as opposed to windowed mode) that locks the framerate to the refresh rate to prevent tearing.

This dual PSU mod would be a great for the Alienware X51. I've always though about building one using a barebones case with a Maximus VI Impact, 4770k Cooled with a Noctua NH-L12 and a GTX 780 or Titan. As far as I know, the Titan can run on a 600w power supply without issue.
PS - Mr. Fox, you wouldn't happen to take commisions would you?

Do you have any idea if there are going to be new models with 980m SLi or are they just going to update the P370SM-A and P377SM-A series?
Edit: Also do you know when separate cards will become available?
