  1. can't agree more! 7970m is truly a beast even @ stock clock! for the insufficient voltage supply circuits on M15x's motherboard u mentioned, have u tried to modify and improve the supply? Normally I'll consider it really impossible... but not after I read ur incredible threads about physical modification on 6970 & 920xm : )
  2. Svl7! I love u!! When I was so frustrated for unable to stop the 7970m from the annoying throttling when playing crysis 2 or running 3d mark 11(combined test), I find ur thread of the modified vbios of 7970m!! I must say i feel like seeing the god the moment I see ur posts!! After I re-flash the vbios to reduce the voltage to 0.975V(first I tried 1V, but throttle won't stop just gets better ), I find no more throttle any more!! With the new vbios, I'm able to run 3d mark 11 with 920 @ 24/24/24/24, no more throttle in combined test. Also, however long I run crysis 2, not even once throttle I detected. It's like a miracle and finally I can run 7970m perfectly in M15x, all with ur help! I wanna to say Thank you man!!
  3. Hi Svl7, I find...with 7970m, running Crysis 2 is almost impossible as the GPU will throttle from time to time. I've monitored the CPU/GPU both and find 920xm is stable. I've tried to limit CPU power consumption by making the CPU run at stock(24,23,17,17), even limiting the TDP/TDC within 50W. But seems still can't give 7970m enough power she needs. and the result is the clock frequency keep dropping from 850/1200 to 450/300 from time to time...(GPU temp is absolutely ok as it never hit over 76C) I'm a little frustrated now and don't know what more I can do to stop the GPU throttling. the only thing I can think of is to lower the voltage of 7970m. But still, it can't be done now as the vbios can't be modified... Any thoughts from you? I really need ur suggestions. Thank you!
  4. Thank you mw86!! I really appreciate for so much detailed explanation. I'll continue my test to find the sweet spot. Thank you again : )
  5. Got another question here...Is there any way to increase the default PSU of 150W? or is it confirmed that for M15x, u can never get more than 150w input as the BIOS limitation? I understand now that the dropping has nothing to do with the default PSU. I'm asking this because if we can get more power, then we're able to limit CPU power consumption in a higher level, still not affecting GPU power input.
  6. Ok, got it. so basically we can limit the TDP/TDC of 920xm by using Throttlestop, and that will give a stable power supply for 7970m, even to overclock, right? Also, could u share your set of TDP/TDC for 920xm : )
  7. I see. Actually, I've tried to do the test which is to gradually increase the TDP/TDC/clocks to find how much more CPU score can be improved without dropping GPU. The default set of 920(24.23.17.17/TDP/TDC @ 62) is absolutely ok with 7970m. No dropping. But bring about a low physical score of 4800+ in 3d mark 11 After several test, I find GPU won't be affected when CPU @ 24.23.19.19 /TDP/TDC @ 65. If any harder, GPU drops...this is a little frustrated I must say. Before upgrading, 920 can easily run @ 24.24.24.24/TDP/TDC @ 90w without dropping 5870m, though I realize huge power consumption difference between 5870 and 7970. I'll try to do more test to find the sweet spot to maximum the performance of CPU and GPU. But I still have two questions: 1. Even for the default set of 920, the CPU is running a little bit low (only 4800), not normal right? It should be around 5200-5500. i'd like to know How to set the CPU voltage? I'm using Throttlestop to set the TDP/TDC. is changing voltage also possible with Throttlestop. could u give me a link of ur post about ur set of 920. 2. If it's not the PSU limit but the too much capability of CPU stretching power which causes unstable power give to GPU. do u think it possible to over clock GPU and CPU at the same time to improve GPU's power stretch capability within the total power limitation of 150w? Thank you!
  8. Svl7, Thank you for the clarification : ) I agree that even with 920+7970, the PSU may still below 150w. But, it can't explain the fact that with 920 and 7970 both @ default setting, the GPU score hit 5639 which is normal, the physical score is only 4858, when running 3d mark 11. I've run the test several times, the result remains the same - GPU gets its normal score, but CPU score drops a lot. Based on ur theory, the result should be reverse - CPU gets normal score which is 5200-5500, GPU score may drop as the insufficient power. Any idea on this?
  9. Hi Svl7!! It's great to meet u here. I've read ur post about the performance of 7970m in M15x here. Also, I know u r facing the black-screen issue when running Hwinfo cuz I had the exact same issue lol! My Cpu is 920. Yeal, u r right. P5800+ is a little bit low for the overclocking @ 1000/1350. The reason is also clear...it's caused by the less performance of 920xm. For example, with a default set(24,23,17,17). I can only get the CPU score of 4800+, which is absolutely too low. I usually will get a score of 5500+ with 5870m before upgrading. The reason for this, I think is caused by the 150w power limitation. When running 920+7970. the limited power probably stretched by 7970, 920 thus couldn't get enough power. Even if I opened the Throttlestop, the problem remain the same. So, I'm wondering how u could run 920 even @ 25 for all the 4 cores. Wouldn't u meet any problem of unstable or clock dropping? Also, how u set the CPU with throttlestop ? have u unlocked the TDP?
