Hi, Scott.
A Couple of years ago I built my first eGPU setup using a PM3N on my Lenovo ThinkPad E530. I had the same unresponsive issue as you until I realized that I forgot to remove the protective tape from the gold fingers (insert face palm here), just saying =)
I had a white-list issue with that machine (booting blackscreen I when eGPU was connected), forcing me to use Setup 1.x and hot-swap the Wlan for the PM3N.
I think I even managed to get Setup 1.x to anti-whitelist my port too.

PM sent to you.

Hmm that sucks!
I'd advice you to make a restore/ISO of your current installation, just so you can easily restore if it f-s up again.
Let me come back with another suggestion

I would install the 340.52 driver only for dGPU, then connect the eGPU and use the device manager method, pointing out the c:\nvidia\ ... \340.52.

@Tyrant Erik
Very cool to see a commercial try for eGPU! That CPU though I can't recommend buying this for gaming, but maybe for editing and other tasks. Still cool to see that someone gets the concept!

Lenovo Thinkpad L440.
Sorry, I thought that was your older system.

Unfortunately I don't have PE4L to test with not do I know anyone from Czech republic who might lend me one for testing. As of system, I'm using Lenovo l440 which has been proven to work with exp gdc (though only once and with older bios).
OK, so that narrows it down a bit. What is your current system?

I actually have an AMD card. But, nonetheless, it didn't make any difference. The problem is that it either freezes (you can't install the drivers) or it doesn't detect anything (again, can't install a driver for something that has not been recognized as connected). The pressing it in helped only once...
I'll probably write to cloud hero and ask him for a new EXP-GDC as that is most likely the source of the problem...
Yeah it might be a cable issue, worst case is that your express card slot is somehow damaged or incompatible.
You don't happen to have a PE4L to test with?
And what system are you using?
-
I'm sorry it didn't help. It sounds like you're experiencing the same issues I did when using the DA-2. What is the rating on the 12V rail of your ATX psu?
What GPUs are present in your system? (iGPU and or dGPU)

Try re-installing the NVIDIA drivers while holding the card all the way in, any difference?

Yeah I'm still in the stage of trying to figure out what's causing my problems. Theoretically the DA-2 should be more than enough for the GTX970. Yes it's probably the most powerful fanless 12V brick you can get for a reasonable buck right now. I'd wait if I were you to see if how I solve this

Love that picture
You have to use a 12V PSU like ATX or the fanless Dell DA-2 brick.
Did you use DDU to clean out Your NVIDIA drivers before installing the new one?
There is a software (https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/694754/tdr-manipulator-v1-1-02-23-2014-/) that let's you extend the or even turn off the TDR protection settings. Try it and tell me how it goes!

I too have TDR FAILURES. Tested replacing my DA-2 with an ATX psu and the problem disappeared. I think the problem is a combination of the GTX900 architecture and NVIDIA drivers making the voltage unstable during idle and boost voltages.

Can you test holding the EC all the way in the slot and see if the GPU is responsive? I had a bad slot on a dell e6430 machine that needed this to work

Do you mean power the Akitio + x16 PCIe slot with only the use of the thunderbolt cable?

What I meant was if it's possible for pe4c parts would work with exp gdv v6 base.
Here is my boring answer:
Have in mind that EXP GDC and PE4C might have different pinouts, that could cause damage to your system and/or GPU.

I really feel for you buddy!
So what's the plan now? Wish I could help you.

Damn, that sucks
What was the sellers defense?
If they have any rev x.2 you should demand one + draw a picture that clearly shows what you mean. Many Chinese - English communication failures has been solved by drawing/photoshopping images

I'd go for the MSI GTX 970

Are you referring to external PSUs such as ATX or even DC adapters? I'd love to see a different slicker approach with inbuilt power that doesn't have the footprint of a desktop. I always strive for a portable solution.

Här har du en tredje!
Cool, really thought I was the only Swede here. I'm exited to see that we are a handful Any of you guys happen to live in Gothenburg?

Would this work?
If I got a powered pcie x16 riser and attached it to a 120w hp laptop charger? Am i able to directly attach a molex cable to one?
If the charger is rated 19V you'll destroy your graphics card and more! If it's rated 12V you can use it.
