1. OK, so going to need to make a cut-out in the bottom of this laptop then. Thank you.

Not sure if you have to. I screwed back my bottom-cover wth the PM3N connected, it works pretty good even though it bulges a little. Try that first if you don't want to make holes in your laptop.

  2. Not to mention the i7-3820QM might be further unlockable to gain a further 400Mhz across all multipliers (37, 36, 35 -> 41, 40, 39 when 1, 2, 3/4 cores are active). Thats when the ME firmware allows the partially unlocked multipliers to be used .

We know how to unlock the flash descriptor on a 2570P (ALT++ during poweron). Just need someone to take the plunge to alter the ME firmware by following Khenglish's guidelines at http://forum.techinferno.com/general-notebook-discussions/2091-lets-enable-overclocking-all-6-7-series-laptops.html to try. Might be an idea to invest in a 90W AC adapter to avoid power starvation if wanting to try. Needs cooling system mods to be able to handle the extra heat.

Funny you just mentioned this, wrote a PM regarding this a couple of minutes ago.

I also have the 90W adapter in my possession, right now it's not necessary but might come in handy if we manage to unlock the CPU.

    @bjorm:

I'll have to my biggest issue pre-purchase was the screen. Now that I used it for a couple of weeks it's really no biggie at all, I'm even pretty satisfied with the lower resolution as well.

    Are you in to gaming?

    If yes, eGPU + 2570P + 45/35W i7 + heatsink mod = absolutely best choice.

Remember that you can always wait and see what my result yields (and ask me for any measurement that I missed) and decide if it's good enough.

  3. Do You mean 40C in idle with 3820QM in 2570p??? Does idle mean average temperatures during browsing internet, listening to music, lastfm and few office documents?

What about stress temperatures (for example peak in 3dm11 benchmark)?

Wouldn't be better for You to swap CPU between E530 and 2570p? :)

    Hi dude.

I mean idle-idle (doing nothing) but I will make proper measurements for : idle, browsing, movie/streaming, gaming.

The E530 uses the 3612QM and I like gaming so I thought a 45W quad was a no-brainer (also got it for a reasonable price).

    3820QM vs. 3612QM

  4. Yes both the T500 and the T410 respectively express card slot 54 and 34. Both laptops have 8gb RAM and C2D-T9600 (T500) and i7-620M (T410). Not sure if there is any difference really besides the side of the express card slot, but I might end up using the eGPU for the T410 due to it has the best CPU.

I have been living in mainland China for the past 4 years so might just buy it from here: Íâ½ÓÏÔ¿¨Éù¿¨ ¿É´ïµ½PCIE 2.0 PE4L-EC060A-ÌÔ±¦Íø I guess that is the same one as you are referring too?

  5. Hi all

I am about to purchase the needed things for an DIY eGPU but first I have a few things I would like to ask.

I have the following laptops: Thinkpad T61, T500 and T410 all with integrated graphics. I am guessing my best bet would be to use the eGPU with the T410 due to it has an I7 cpu. However It would be great if I could also use it on my T500, would that be possible?

I have been looking at the PE4L v2.1b and PE4H v2.4a and I am really not sure which one I should by? The PE4H is around 30 USD more expensive than the PE4L.

    Your help is much appreciated!

Both T410 and T500 have expresscard slot right (just made a quick google)?

Then you should go for the PE4L-EC060A since it's GEN2 and cheaper.

    I have one my self.

It takes about a week to ship from Hong kong to Sweden, so you could expect something in that range.

  6. Hi there. On this forum and somewhere else I start seeing ads for some similar DIY eGPU parts from this company:

    Arstech

    Installing and use of XPRS-HOST-EC

    Installing and use of XPRS-PX-X16

    And some interesting adapter:

It looks like they are using dual SATA cables to stream PCI Express signal.

Also I would like to mention, on the bplus website, they started selling the M2MU2 adapter (M.2 (NGFF) to mini PCI-E Adapter). New notebooks like Lenovo Y510 use this new connector instead of mPCIe.

    M2MU2 (M.2 (NGFF) to mini PCI-E Adapter)

  7. Thanks for your reply. I've installed desktop driver but on restart, at the windows loading screen there's BSOD and reboots. When I unplug eGPU then hotplug black screen, reboot, win7 loading screen and BSOD on so on and on reboot there is a "tac" sound. (could the BSOD be due to eGPU? Weid thing is after drivers install I can see "GTX 660" in device display)

I am looking for Optimus drivers for GTX660 in order to run internal LCD.

  8. Man....you're a life saver; the fans were at full charge and the switch was the trick: on switch 2 win7 recognized the gpu

now drivers: what should I download? Also when I connect the PE4L the wifi is disabled...

Well I think this is something we're missing in the intro-section. I almost went crazy before I realized you should play around with SW1/SW2 until your doesn't sound like an aircraft =)

  9. Got it powered on; but even connected to laptop nothing happens, no device popup...after restart still nothing....although there are green and red lights, I've tried it on XP and it report some "USB\VID_8087&PID_07DA\6&D2B1927&0&1" under other devices -> usb devices???

Hmm.. The graphics card fans are spinning?

The light should be green only (not red), if the fans are running 100% sounding like an aircraft it's something wrong (they should idle).

You have two switches on the PE4L: sw1 and sw2, play around with these first.

Before switching; disconnect the EC and power off eGPU.

  10. after comparison my results where I achieved around 7,5k points in Graphics score to score achieved with desktop CPU (9,5k points in GS), I assume that GTX760 and above are not worth of buying because of more than 20% loss in graphisc power.

On polish forum we figured out that I have an problem, there are few question:

is it possible that i7-3612QM has more than 1000 PhysicsScore points more than i7-2630QM?

how its possible to gain 8800 GraphicsScore points in 3dm11 on GTX670 @MikjoA) when I gained only 7500 points on GTX760 and 2630QM?

Yes it's very likely, see this. You can see that it's a quite big difference.

Regarding @MikjoA 's graphics score: He has a pretty bad ass OC running!

I asked him in PM and it's pretty crazy. My score is more "normal" but a bit OC:ed though.

  11. Thanks for your reply, I'll throw a look at it and post feedback.

Edit: I ran the DSDT EDITOR.bat, it pops up for a second then nothing, there sould be a file if I'm correct but I can't find one.

Any specific reason you're using win XP?

I've tried that once on XP but my attention span didn't allow me to succeed a DSDT override (I felt something was fundamentally different for DSDT tables compared to 7, BSOD BSOD BSOD!).

I would really really recommend DSDT override using win7. Anyway, good luck and keep us updated!

  12. Just a quick question. Its my first post so stay with me...

Is it worth getting Setup 1.x given that I have 8gb of RAM in my Elitebook 2540p (i5 | Win 7). Does Setup 1.x have a work around for higher than 2gb RAM? From what I've understood (or misunderstood!) its not possible with more than 2gb RAM. At this stage I'm using an old 9800GT Palit gfx card - I'll get a better one if i can manage to get the eGPU up and running - I have a PE4H v2.4a and a suitable power supply. In the past I've tried DSDT 36 bit compaction but tbh I have no idea what I'm doing. I've read numerous forums over the past few months and i know that other HP 2540p owners have made the magic happen, but its not happening for me. I guess i jumped in a bit too far at the deep end.

Any advice or direction to advice welcome!

I must advice to test with a newer Kepler/Fermi card (GT430 or newer) since these cards have different allocation requirements.

Can you borrow from a friend? Else I'm pretty sure you'll need Setup 1.x to allocate it.

Regarding the 2GB of ram: I think you refer to the 4GB+ issue that now can be solved by extending your PCI-space with a DSDT-Override.

In your case I'm no sure, how much memory do you use and size of Tolud?

  13. I guess you were right about the TOLUD subject - even though I injected the TOLUD 64bit extension set, I recently have been getting

_a lot_ of BSOD's when booting the system.

I have to reboot about 3 times until the thing stays stable and usable.

This is all running with Gen1,

Switching to Gen2 is not an option for me at this point.

If I do, the Nvidia drivers will refuse to accept the card (cannot open the Nvidia control panel) and also MSI Afterburner will mark the GPU as blank.

Should I think about resorting to Setup 1.1x .. or?

That sounds like a power issue to me.

    1. What power source do you use?

    2. I have the same BSOD issues sometimes (almost exactly when windows boots up and reverts to my ext. screen), do you use mPCIe or EC?

    Hi guys, I've just got my PE4L v2.1b. I'm using clevo 350ET/ Sager 6350 windows 8 64, 8gb ram and borrowed GTX760 + 300watt psu from my friend.

First, I tried to uninstall my nvidia driver and then I disabled the internal gtx660m, and then go into sleep mode. Next, I turn on the psu and plug in the cable into my wifi slot and back into windows.

The windows detected the GTX760 but with error 43, the evga also detected by GPU-Z.

I'm reading the troubleshooting faq, and got confused, anyone can help me?

It sounds like you might need Setup 1.x or do you already have it?

If not, PM @Tech Inferno Fan for instructions how to donate.

It might be other solutions but I can't help you further :(

    Read source.

  14. I need help with this question, would appreciate some help here. :)

I got an ATX PSU from a friend's old PC. Its rated 300W on the box, 2 rails, no PCIe connector, has enough molexes to adapt it to 6 pin PCIe via 2 molex.

Its 12V rails are 12V1@10A, 12V2@13A respectively. Its made by Solytech. Are the specs of this PSU overrated? Does adapting the molexes give me enough amp to run a 134W TDP GTX 650 Ti Boost safely or do I need a better power supply?

  15. Okay sweet thanks so much thats great news! and thats really ironic, because I just stumbled across that just a little bit ago before I saw you mention it haha! Oh and I forgot to ask, where do I go to get setup 1.x? I have to contact @Tech Inferno Fan through his email right? I thought I read somewhere that there is a discount also if you are a techinferno forum user or something?

Yeah PM nando for more information, he will help you!

    Good luck now =)

  16. Yeah it has intel hd 3000 on it. Im not so worried about the external setup, but having my computer recognize it and using setup 1.x kinda looks like a nightmare to me haha. I kinda have the main idea on how to use it I think. Is there like specific steps, or does it all vary from computer to computer?

That's great, then you can expect a huge graphics boost since iGPU allows for 1.2opt!

Setup 1.x is really great, it's really worth every dollar!

Without it we wouldn't have this fairly big community since the variety of eGPU friendly systems would be much smaller.

Yes, there is specific steps from the official guide that applies for every computer, of course some computer needs some extra steps (for example anti-whitelisting).

I've used on my E530 which wouldn't have accept the eGPU at all.

Basically, when you made all steps working you'll have a profile saved that you then easily can load during boot.

    @coyote

No problem dude, my soldering skills arent that great either,

you can use regular ATX power supplies, it's super easy and no soldering!

  17. Yeah this is my current system, sadly I dont have an expresscard which is really a bummer. I have a i7 2670qm and planning to get the gtx 660 for the gpu. Would I still see pretty good performance however? I guess anything is better than the igpu by itself haha :)

    Yeah the cpu is nice!

Sorry I couldn't find if you have switchable graphics or not? (hd3000/4000 active)?

  18. @coyote : Yeah, the 203w old one for xenon =)

It requires some pretty easy cable soldering of course, but it's a very nice and "modular" (not sure if it is the right word) solution.

    - - - Updated - - -

@amehrings : (hate this auto multi quote feature, it almost always fu**s up hehe )

Yeah most probably you'll need setup 1.x, is this your current system or are you planning to buy one?

Expresscard is the way to go if you want less hustle, but I don't mind =)

  19. The issue with buying a brand new computer those days is that a mobile card like GTX 770m is too good comparing with the eGPU implementations.

<strike>If I compare the top egpu leaderboard from there http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/2109-diy-egpu-experiences-%5Bversion-2-0%5D.html#implementations

with the benchmark results from here: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M - NotebookCheck.net Tech

one can easily spot that GTX770m is kinda equivalent in performance in all around benchmarks. </strike><strike></strike>

So the eGPU counts for real if you already have the notebook or you are looking for a cheap one with a lousy video card.

Is my thinking flawed in any way?

Later edit: Yes, is flawed, I was looking only at the 3dmark 2006 leaderboard.

  20. I've ordered the PE4L-EC100A. Next GPU and PSU. I think I'll get the (GTX 660 Twin Frozr III OC + 3D Mark). What about the PSU, is it possible to have a mATX PSU (small size)?

I'd use a 170w+ PSU for the 660Ti. I use an xbox 360 brick for my 670, works great!

    - - - Updated - - -

Okay sweet thanks, is their like some extension adapter I can use that will support gen2 for when I want to unplug the egpu and take my computer on the go or not? I just feel like if I unplug it from the mPCIe all the time that wouldnt be good for it.

If you secure it with a screw (just like you do with the wifi) and you don't have to worry. I found some 10mm screws for the PM3N-end and putted a nut on the back securing it.
