  1. Nice. Thank you :). Sorry for the time to reply. Was testing some things.

    5) Define Plug-and-Play in this sense.

I mean being able to hotplug the eGPU on a working computer and have it detected and working. I was able to do this yesterday with dGPU disabled, DSDT override, compaction and expresscard set to gen2 on setup 1.3. Although with my taskbar wifi icon presenting an error "X" but working normally.

Also, did you notice any video or mouse latency on games? I have some but I think it's not caused by the eGPU, as my dGPU and iGPU are also affected. It seems that it takes over a quarter of a second from the mouse click to the game reacting to it. I could not yet test this on an external monitor. That has been a big annoyance for me to wonder if my eGPU really delivers it's performance.

  2. Hello!
I got really interested in this laptop and would like to ask a couple questions. Sorry if any of those are already answered but I did not find the answer by myself.

I'm planning to use it with an eGPU if I buy it. My current computer is a Vostro 3550 with a GTX 960, PE4C 3.0 eGPU.

    So...

-What can you tell about the build quality/durability of this laptop?
-As I read the G2 version has the Expresscard running only at gen1. If I get that laptop soon I will try to install the 734287-001 TB1 expresscard assembly, as I only plan to get an TB2 egpu later. If that doesn't work would mPCE-e be an easy option on this laptop? As the bottom cover can be removed very easily.

-Regarding the egpu error 12 issues in windows 7, is there any work around with BIOS, an dsdt override or setup 1.3? Because I really like this OS.
-How are the drivers from HP? Is there any problem with the Quadro dGPU drivers, HD 4600 or something else? As I feel the video drivers from Dell for my Vostro are somewhat unstable. Under some random circumstances, they will stop working properly, adding mouse lag or the dGPU don't running on full performance unless I reinstall them several times. There are drivers from AMD, but they will make my system run hotter and doesn't offer an option to run only on iGPU, allowing me to use the eGPU without uninstalling the dGPU drivers.

-Will it work correctly for a plug and play eGPU?

-Can it recognize and boot from an HDD in a DVD caddy?

-Also, I would be really grateful if someone can post pictures or make a list of it's BIOS's capabilities. As I will take this in consideration when buying a new computer. My vostro's BIOS unfortunately is just useless. Other than those two problems it's a very good laptop, but not really eGPU friendly (the dGPU version at least).

    Thank you all

  3. Hello.

Can you post the chipset and motherboard temperatures of your 8470p during load?

I noticed this notebook uses a part of the chassis to cool it, unlike the E6430. I may want to get a quad core later so I got curious about this.

My Vostro 3550's chipset gets over 54°C idle, 75°C while gaming on the dGPU. There is also an unknown "Auxiliary2" thermistor in hwinfo64 that is always a little hotter than the other parts when idling (65-75°C). The CPU (i5-2430m): 55-90°C

Would you happen to know how I could test if the ExpressCard port is working?

You can try with some other expresscard device (Maybe this?), but you will have to be sure it uses the pci-e connection, as some only need the usb part of the connector and may work normally even if there is a problem.

I think it would be better if you can find someone to help you test the PE4C.

Also, be sure to take a look in your BIOS to see if the port is disabled or something.

The PSU is plugged into a power strip not shown on the right. No lights appear to be on.

Well, I'm not sure how to help now :c

You could try to make sure you expresscard port is working or test the PE4C on another system.

Maybe ask for help in the main DIY eGPU thread. If Nando4 were over here he would be talking with you. I hope he gets better soon.

You're right, I miscounted, it's 24 pins on the PE4C and 20 pins on the PSU.  However, the card doesn't power up when I plug it in on the right. I've verified the PSU with the paperclip test and the adapter "works" when powered from the 12v jack(the charger doesn't have sufficient wattage for the card's TDP though).  Is there something wrong with the cable or do I need a 20 to 24 converter?

Did you connect everything to a working computer? It should turn on when connected to a system

Hoi, I bought a PE4C v3.0 recently and tried to connect an ATX PSU to it, but the white power input slot has holes for 28 while my PSU has only 24 pins on the connector. It only plugs in with flush with the right side, leaving 4 unfilled on the left.

Is this adapter supposed to have that many pins on the ATX power slot? What is supposed to plug into it?

Don't you have a 20 pin psu? My PE4C only have 24pins on the motherboard connector...

If this is the case then you should left the 4 left pins unplugged. Like this: http://i.stack.imgur.com/O8mMO.jpg (As if looking from below the PE4C)

  8. Hi. In Fire strike 1.1 on internal display my system got a score of:

    4537 total

5658 graphics score (test 1=27.87 fps, test 2=22.02 fps)

    3725 physics score (11.83 fps)

    2102 Combined score (9,78 fps)

I fixed the mouse lag reinstalling the igpu+dgpu drivers after installing the Nvidia ones. And then Bf1942 ran perfectly at solid 60 fps, as it was very unplayable before.

I did get this problem a couple times before trying the egpu. In this case the Nvidia install messed them up, but those weird dell drivers seem to stop working for no reason and are a pain to bring back to work (That happened one time when I was changing the graphics options in BO2 and suddenly I start getting huge input lag in all games.). But as I saw in my last reinstall, it seems that using the uninstall option on the driver installer rather than the Programs and Features list seems to remove Catalyst Control Center and the Intel+AMD drivers properly, allowing a clean reinstall.

And with that my Unigine Benchmark also got a little better. Score: 1808, FPS: 43.2, Min: 20, Max: 63.8

  9. Hello!

I just got my replacement PE4C 3.0 and it's working nicely. The first really had a manufacturing problem affecting Gen2 performance.

I can run most games on maximum settings on the notebook screen, though with some mouse delay on some of them, I don't really know why.

Here are the benchmarks with the new PE4C added. Unigine Valley 1.0, Ultra, 1366x768, 4xAA, Directx 11

    What happened to Nando4?

  10. Hi guys.

I just got my PE4C 3.0 with expresscard cable. Gen1 works fine but Gen 2 gives me roughly half the gen1 performance on programs...

Can this happen in a normally working PE4C 3.0? I think I received a faulty one.

I have an EXP GDC Beast that I wanted the PE4C to replace, it works properly in gen2 but crashes sometimes.

    Hardware:

Dell Vostro 3550 (i5-2430m/6gb RAM/HD3000 igpu/AMD Radeon HD 7650m dgpu, with its bus disabled in device manager and the igpu selected as main gpu in CCC, to prevent error 12)

    PE4C-EC060A V3.0

    Nvidia GTX 960 2gb

    SS-300tfx 300w PSU

I have Windows 7 64bit and setup 1.3 to set the port to gen2. Only tested with optimus since I don't have a monitor right now.

Both AMD Catalyst and Nvidia drivers are installed.

Some benchmarks I made in Unigine Valley 1.0 with my adapters (1366x768 fullscreen, 4xAA, ultra quality):

    PE4C 3.0

    X1.1opt- Fps: 29.2 Score: 1220 MinFps: 8.5 MaxFps: 44

    X1.2opt- Fps: 13.9 Score: 583   MinFps: 6.9 MaxFps: 17

    EXP GDC Beast

    X1.1opt- Fps: 29.1 Score: 1218 MinFps: 13.9 MaxFps: 43

    X1.2opt- Fps: 38.8 Score: 1624 MinFps: 4.6   MaxFps: 62

Thanks, and sorry if my post became unnecessarily long for the question
