That doesn't happen.... wonder what is wrong with my M17xr4?    It clearly recognizes the 970m in device manager.   And then i installed a 6 month old or so driver with the modded inf for the 970m.....   but I can't solely use discrete graphics, and as a result I'm forced to use cpu graphics possibly for everything.

I'm supposed to hit Fn+F7 at the same time right?  on the keyboard?    Is a menu or something supposed to pop up when i do that?    As far as i know nothing is happening.

to use a 2. pc is not the only way to change your hdd to gpt. if I am not wrong in win 7 is a way to use diskpart before install Windows, maybe that works in win 10 also.

think you can ask google how to make it

well I installed windows on a gpt hdd.....     still the same problem with optimus....  However.... i know there is a way to boot PEG... I still am running bios A11 unmodified....  Will A13 give me the PEG option in the BIOS menu?

I was hoping for just plug and play and modified Inf.... that worked but then the first game i installed (planetside 2) it was super choppy and slow using the onboard video rather than the 970m (though the 970m shows in device manager).  I tried to tell Optimus to always use the GTX 970, and even though it is selected i could still tell the game was using on-board video.    As a result of this my next go was to try to boot in PEG mode, but my bios doesn't give me an option for PEG mode.   So the last resort is to do all these steps you are talking about.....  Looks like the GPT thing might be a bit more difficult than i thought.  I assumed i could just click on 'reformat HDD' from the windows install menu and choose GPT.        

So I have to somehow use a second pc to change my HDD to GPT?

 "Load Legacy Option Rom" must be "Disabled", "Secure Boot" must be "Disabled" and "Windows 8 Fast Boot"  must be  "Disabled".

after complete reinstall switch the internal of, reboot and install the nvidia driver again (i had to remod the driver inf because the id of my 980M has changed)

Thanks Zoldago... I'm going to reinstall windows then.  From what i have gathered i need to install Windows 8 by formatting a usb driver in UEFI, then format my laptop HDD in GPT, then Install Windows 8.1.... then Disable Legacy Rom in the bios and the other stuff in the bios.    Thanks man!

I'm also running Windows 10 with UEFI install.

fn+f7 pressing at same time do nothing for me.... so I need to simply install the a13 bios update and reboot with f2, and choose uefi correct?   It's probably because i haven't booted in PEG because the BIOS i have A11, doesn't give me that option

I appreciate that... could you provide me with a link for that bios?    I assume it allows you to boot in PEG then?   the bios i have now gives me no PEG option for the r4

Guys, if you would help....   what do i need to do if i have an r4 and have it on dell's a12 bios?    I put a 970m in the computer but the discrete graphics won't run because of the intell 4000 graphics, but the computer recognizes the 970m and the installation went smoothly.      I came here because booting in PEG i believe is the option i must take, but i do not see an A12 unlocked bios for the r4 in order to do that.   Any suggestions?

I will definitely consider it.   I'll do some research on it.   The 970m works great and stays cool.   I believe the 680m draws more power so higher temps.    However. I'll look it up.  

So I am getting ready to sell my m15x with an i7-940x  processor and 6gb 970m, 8gb ram, 750gb hdd.....  my question is How much if you owned this laptop, would you sell it for?  The lights do not work due to a bad command center by Dell, but thats the only issue... screen is a 1600x900.                      I would love some suggestions for the local market place.  Thanks guys.     The laptop is in the links.       Everything runs cool even when gaming and the vga works flawlessly.

I would love some direct help to the problem I am having.  I bought this card solely because it stays very cool....and to play low  quality games.   

I have installed the modded driver.  My dilemma is that when the computer starts it goes to a white screen after the windows 10 boot up logo.     I restarted the laptop and have to press F2 to go into the BIOS to deactivate the onboard sound.  Upon doing this my speakers obviously won't work so I am forced to wear USB headphones.       Does anyone have any suggestions in regards to this problem?     Is there a way that someone has found out to where I can get the onboard sound working with this card?  Or should i sell it and go back to a gtx 285 so i can have both video and sound?         (the 6970m or 7970m ran hot so i took them out and didn't want to have to buy a 3 pipe heatsink only to have to modifiy  my casing, nor did i want or desire to flash an undervolt.)    

But sticking with the main question at hand.  I would be grateful for suggestions and help regarding getting the external sound to work with the 765m.

Do i need Wndows 8.1?  Windows 7?    etc possibly so the white screen won't show up having a conflict with the audio when i enable it from the bios?   To use this computer currently i permanently have audio disabled in the bios.

I can confirm the brightness setting can be adjusted on my driver via nvidia control panel.

The one i got from woodzstack did come with screws that you had to use. You won't be able to use the default ones.

Thanks guys, everything is up and running as it should. Ran 3dMark on both an alienware 15 with an i5 and 965m, vs the upgraded m15x with an i7-940xm and 970m.... m15x came out on top. Youtube video will be posted soon tonight.

So I have this alienware m15x and just installed a 970m gpu 6gb.... however NVidia's default driver does not recognize the gpu. I have been anxiously trying to figure out a simple way to install this driver so the card will work. Plus I really want to see what this card can do. Could someone please give me a link and instructions on how to install this video card driver? I know it has something to do with modding the .inf.... but I have no idea how to mod the driver, or install the mod to the driver. Please help!!

Well I have looked into this and will give an answer to my own question for those interested...... Had to buy another vbios chip, and will need to solder it on with a hot air gun. The chip cost about 20 dollars.

i undervolted the 7970m to 9.75 and it worked great...then i undervolted again to the 9.50 and now a black screen when i start the computer. Can't see a thing and had to take the card out and put the old 260m back in. Any way to blind flash it back to 9.75?

I used atiflash to undervolt my card to 9.75, with slv7's bios (and it worked great (thanks slv7) for reducing temps but i still had what i believe were throttling issues since bf4 fps was bouncing all over the place) but then i wanted to undervolt it further to get even better temps and because i ignorantly though maybe it would stop the fps bouncing on bf4.... lo and behold now the screen won't come on anymore after that. I believe i undervolted it to far. Is there a way i can get the card back up to 9.75 or the default factory setting or am i stuck with the old 260m again? Help would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks!

I've been trying to test out this card on Battlefield 4.... it runs anywhere from 100+ fps on medium settings, to 30fps during performance drop situations. While looking at MSI Afterburner i noticed the card would go from 850mhz base clock/1200mhz memory clock, to 450mhz for one or two seconds and then jump back up to 1200mhz again afterwards. During this dips and spikes is when my fps would go way down. Is this because i need to undervolt the card as perhaps the Cpu is hogging power from it or something? I read Slv7 saying something about the m15x motherboard circuits distributing power the wrong way or something like that. I am wondering if i should undervolt the card so that it will not battle with the cpu over power, if that is the reason for the spikes and dips, and how i would do that.

I installed and played neverwinter nights 2 yesterday and for some reason that game seems more demanding than bf4.

I have an i7940xm cpu, and a 7970m gpu that came out of a dell m17x. Catalyst 14.12, and on highs a gpu temp that can reach 80c, and a cpu temp that also can reach 80c. Help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
