  1. Theres a kickstarter project called Wolfe that tries to make an all in one solution for reasonable prices, and Bizon tech posted commercials of his own Rip Off box on the comment section of the project. Thats quite a low move. Luckily people don't seem to be interested. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thewolfe/the-wolfe-supercharge-your-laptop/comments
  2. Thank you @goalque and @Dschijn for the suggestions. I tried disabling the internal LCD completely with DisableMonitor, and to my surprise, it actually didn't help at all. Somehow turning off the display or closing the macbook do not really turn off the 650m. Is there another way to switch it off? I also realized that my epgu gets relatively hot for not really doing anything. At this point I am not even sure what is faulty.
  3. That is exactly what I am worrying about. Even though nothing about their hardware is proprietary, there has to be some sort of special software optimization involved (so that they can sell more of their Stealth Ultrabook?). Together with Razer's usual pricing range, this might not be practical for those who would at first be interested. For me this has to be priced below 350$ to be considerable.
  4. Unfortunately I have unpartitioned my windows since I bought a new windows laptop, so I cannot do the above. I swear though when I used to be in windows playing the same game my dgpu is around 50'C and egpu around 70C, while in os x dgpu jumps over 100. Cpu temp also has ridiculous leaps. I know macbooks have high temps but egpu in os x actually increased my dgpu temp, which was the opposite for windows. I do custom fan speeds for both osx and windows. I tried reinstalling the automate egpu.sh but saw no improvement. Unfortunately I have only used this after 10.11.2 upgrade and 0.98 shell, so I cannot tell if it happens with older versions. Does no one else actually have this problem? Maybe I should reinstall the whole OS to see if that helps...
  5. If only the egpu chassis would be compatible with any other TB3 laptops (hotplugable and reasonably priced), this would truly expand the possibility of egpu and TB3. Lets hope more products like this will come.
  6. I am wondering if mirroring the displays rather than use the external monitor as a secondary display (and close the macbook) would yield better performance? My laptop somehow runs dangerously high temps (cpu core & dgpu 70c+) during normal use and over 100c on cpu when just opening the game launcher. Shouldn't the dgpu be very cool since it should not be in use? I am not sure if this is a driver issue or existing difficulties with os x egpu codes. This happens only occasionally with my abandoned Win 8 egpu setup. Is anyone experiencing unusual high temps? ------------------------------------------------------ After some testing, mirroring the displays only makes performance worse (intense stuttering)...
  7. I am current getting no signal for the monitor even though everything else seems fine. For hardware, I use a 400W PSU, TB2 Akitio Thunder, Gtx980, running hdmi port. I used this setup for windows partition before so it should be fine. I am using version 0.98 script, with csrutil disabled. Am I missing any steps? Thank you for this amazing community. Nevermind somehow it works now thank you!
  8. In the future maybe. But keep in mind usb-C has only a 10Gbps rate compared to TB2 that is 20Gbps or even 40Gbps if TB3 will ever come... Not to mention that only 1 device currently supports it. But since everyone is betting on usb-C to become widely adapted maybe it would be worth the effort to make egpu via usb-C happen?
  9. Somehow now I got it to work now!! Thank you!! I just did exactly the same thing I did before and I don't think I will ever turn it off in case it doesnt work again if I reboot.
  10. Thanks now I know I need to use F3 to save the command for startup.bat. This should be correct? Problem is now I get stuck at this: To clarify, my steps are: 1. eGPU connected to MBP, but external monitor not connected. 2. Initialize eGPU -> run compact all except sata etc.... -> startup.bat test run -> F3 to save? -> chainload into windows... all following the guide. 3. reboot MBP and plug in external display into eGPU this time. 4. choose from external display to run auto startup.bat. 5. Stuck. What's the error here? I don't understand how this does not work. Thanks-
  11. Hello all, I have followed the setup from Karthikrajanv's guide and have managed to setup my eGPU to some success. My MBPr is able to setup the external display, but the eGPU part is not working. I was basically running multiple display with my 650M, while my 980 was idle (altho the fan is still on). Also, it is relatively unknown how I manage to display my screen on the external display. Sometimes my MBP starts on internal display and sometimes external. The DIY egpu menu also does not retain the settings, which means every time I boot up I have to rerun the setup procedure. Does anyone know why my card is not working, while the external display is actually on? *Nvidia Control Panel cannot be opened if external display is working. Does not detect eGPU if only internal display managed to turn on. *this screen pops up when I attempt to initialize eGPU everytime only at external display and gets stuck here: Thank you!
  12. Hi all, So recently I have been trying to set up the eGPU with the mentioned specs: MBPr early 2013 - 650M - TB1 - i7 3840qm - 500SSD - 8GB RAM Seasonic Fanless 400W Molex 16 x 16 PCIe extender Akitio Thunder2 Msi GTX 980 (also 650ti as spare card) Putting together the parts and powering them on was painless. First day I tried plugging in the eGPU setup showed some sign of it working in Win8.1: GTX 980: Fan can detect MBPr - turns on when boot, off when shut down. Screen flickers when plugged in, but does not turn off. HDMI External display shows black screen but shows signal. Device manager display adapter shows 650M and some "adapter" plugged in. GTX 650ti: Fan can detect MBPr. Screen turns off after booting in. MBPr keyboard backlight & volume does not work. DVI External Display shows black screen with signal. I decided to continue the setup the next day. GTX 980: Fan can still detect and run. Screen no longer flickers nor turn off. HDMI external display shows black screen with signal. Device manager display adapter shows only 650M. In Yosemite thunderbolt port detects Akitio thunder2 plugged in. GTX 650ti: Same as before. I am completely stuck at this point.. I have went through several guides and videos here and did not find the solution. I cannot even pass this basic step! Please I am new to this so if I am doing something fundamentally wrong then enlighten me. A couple days ago, I was reading how hard it would be to use internal display and thinking if I should just buy an external. Now I have to worry about if I just wasted $700 something that doesn't work. If someone manages to guide me through this then... I will send... um... a cookie or sth.
  13. So now that I have plugged my GTX980+Akitio thunder2 in the TB1 port into my macbook pro early 2013, following instructions from various guides. The internal screen flickers, but thats it. It did not turn off. The internal display did not turn off and my external display only shows black screen (but theres input). Both the akitio and 980 (both powered by psu) are on (980 even starts to get warm). What do I do now????
  14. So basically there are absolutely no work around for internal display to be used for mbpr that hv 650m or 750m in them? That would be a big turn off since i will m planning to make the egpu portable for lan parties...
  15. Thanks for the quick and detailed reply! Yes my extender is molex- My PSU is Seasonic ss-400FL2, which i think is ATX- does that mean I have to purchase an adapter to turn it on? Since i intend to carry around the eGPU a bit, external monitor seem to be not to feasible.. it would be nice to utilize the retina display IMO 80% of GTX980 performance will be enough for now since I will get a new laptop when the next MBP or sth refreshes this year with TB2. At worst I will use the 980 to build a PC. 80% of 980 would still be a heaven compared to 650m... The price tag on Sonnet III will just be way out of price... I hope soon there will be consumer friendly eGPU out (like the ones in CES this year) that are reasonably priced. Something like a driver that can take care of the entire process that this will take? If some company manage to pull that off then they will make big money IMO.
