  1. Dell DA-2 and GTX 970 works fine, so for that there is no need to search for a bigger PSU. There aren't any other PSUs in the style of the Dell DA-2 that deliver more power anyway. The bigger ones that exist have almost every time a voltage different to 12V, so it's unusable.

In my past research i found that there are plenty of more powerful da2 style psu on ebay. Found up to 300w but they dont have plastic casing and have screw type terminals for wiring so more diy.

  2. Thanks for the advice! Can you be more specific with ''open one end on each and disconnect the ground''? Don't really now what to do here :D

What you would have to do and it only works if your issue is really a ground loop and you have balanced connectors would be to disconnect pin 1 out of the XLR connector or the shield connected to the body (basically the one further away from the other two) on a jack.

  3. Updated to 10.10.4 with the latest 346.02.02f03 drivers and getting occasional random crashes. Nothing too serious yet... (around 1 a week with complete freeze but no stuttering before)

Before on 10.10.3 it was completely rock solid.

That was just to confirm that getting the latest version does not necessarily bring better performances/stability and that crashes are not necessarily hardware related. My advice is if you find something that works, stick to it if you can. If you are still having crashes then update.

  4. Regarding my heating issues I just got everything cleaned up with new fans and new thermal paste. Been playing for two hours now and noticed a significant drop in fan speed ! running 72º average with fans 3000/3600 rpm, sometime even 2500 so happy days !!

Also frame rate seems way more stable but would test more :)

    ps: Turbo boost is disabled

  5. Like ba10s118 wCaeCBlugFf8ZLjMcxmEFIUdiB8NDAQCN4zEB1yrxHwAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==said in http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/10224-i-just-want-confirm-before-purchasing-questions.html

The i5 on macbook air is not the typical one.

I have no idea about the pcie bandwith. Maybe @Dschijn would know something about that?

My take on that is that since my I3 was good enough for me and I mean by that great to play at 1080p with upscaled internal rendering (the nvidia tech) full details in wow and elite; technically even a slightly less fast I5 has to be good enough as long as you don't do heavy multitasking and the game is well optimised for OS X if not using windows.

Nowadays GPU do the vast majority of the work and the trend will continue to go that way, CPU only handling simple operations so I would go for the biggest GPU if possible still to be future proof.

  6. The 960 might be the best suited for TB1 in term of matching but buying a 970 or 980 is not going to degrade performances and might be more future proof.

I don't know which games are more CPU dependant but you should NOT worry about your I5. It is good enough for sure.

The only thing you should be worry about is the pcie bandwith required for the game but there is no thread or info about that yet. You'll have to take the plunge.

If anyone more with more knowledge on that can comment that would be welcome.

  7. Umm..I think GTX 970 cannot provide more data than the TB1 can afford, I guess.

Or you can just install windows to test which part goes wrong?

The fact that TB1 is a bottleneck has already been well documented on the forum. Sorry i don't have the link cause im on my phone right now. But as i also said this has also a lot to do with the game code itself as OSX is not as good as windows. On simple unity style portage; Windows seem to give much better performances but we have not had a direct comparison yet. I don't have windows so i cannot do it. That said i have parallels. I might give it a go this weekend just for fun.

  8. On my pc i used to play elite dangerous at max settings with an I3 and gtx 970. Now i am on a macbook pro with I7+gtx970+tb1 and cannot reach max settings even if my cpu load do not reach more than 30%. So perf in the case of this game is limited by 1) TB1 and 2) has much to do with the Mac optimisation version of the game, not much the hardware as long as you have something decent like your setup.

  9. I5 is perfectly fine for almost any game as long as you don't do too much multitasking. Your weak link would be the tb1 connection but this also depends of the game so no way to know before. Some game are more bandwith hungry than others but in my experience with wow, blizzard seem to do good mac versions.

  10. Paste from google:

In an electrical system, a ground loop is an unwanted current in a conductor connecting two points that are supposed to be at the same potential, often ground, but are actually at different potentials. Ground loops are a major cause of noise, hum, and interference in audio, video, and computer systems.

  11. I would recommend experiencing with older drivers if you can sometime that can make a big difference. Personally I run an old driver on OS X I found 346.01.02f03 to give me the best stability and performances improved as the game got patched, no driver change so far.

Too busy times to take the risk updating to 10.10.4 yet but I'll keep posted If I see any performance/stability change.

  12. @Morv It confirms than game optimisation is way better in windows than OS X.

My experience with Elite is that when it got released I got between 20-30 FPS then after a few patches it got up round 25-45 fps so there is a lot to do with the developer too. Many of them do a simple port using tools like unity or similar so the optimisation is never very good.

Also to note than in my case; using TB1 I have a huge bottleneck.

The other thing is the lack of proper great 3d API for mac like directX for windows; OS X is still using OpenGL mainly which was never made for mac either as far as I know. With the release of Metal in El Capitan we might see this change for the better but right now if you want best performances either the developer need to do better mac versions or stick to windows. Still 40fps is quite good I think; at least for me.
