  1. @TheGame Given factory tdp/tdc,heat,number of cores used (including every background process there is running during test) and workload on a stress test you don't always see the highest multiplier if one of those is over preset limits. What you can do is overclock in the bios we have the guides here. For windows aero problems try disabling Desktop Composition on the application that isn't displaying right by going to properties on the shortcut you launch the app from and going to compatibility and unchecking desktop composition... So when you have that app running it doesn't display using aero. Also that image was small could you post a full size desktop screenshot like 1920x1080. To me it looked like the browser just had transparency on and was supposed to look like that, but I can't see any details with a small image. You can use hwinfo and throttlestop they both show many details of what's going on in the system and the CPU itself. On throttle stop enable the option to refresh reading the values faster. Also the Intel turbo boost meter isn't too bad but the other to are more accurate. Lets see what you get but don't use endurance type tests use something like was suggested above the 32m. It may not maintain the max multiplier but it will run at that for a bit while its under its limits and as suggested above use 1 core/thread.

Thanks and here is a slightly better picture if it helps any!

  3. actually no they did not! see one thing that people never seem to understand is that most Huge corporations have even bigger security flaws but usually with enough IT personal they find things faster but never the less they dident and they thought they could fire and rehire to make there consumers think they are doing something about it i mean come on the PSU sign up forum is still down

  4. actually you are right not an AMD prob but a Dell prob and it actually is common to Dell lately. They really don't have good quality control since Alienware was purchased by dell, but not limited to Alienware division the Dell sector is just as bad. Just see the Alienware review on home page.

Oh I agree and since I did my research before I called to get a exchange for my R2 I found out that Alienware still has one independent location (still owned by dell just run by alienware) in Costa Rica and that is were the quality is at the manager asked me if i would not mind waiting one extra week for quality control *because of all my past issues* and i told him i would wait a month as long as this is the last one i need to send back!

  5. Dell being at fault is very correct in that instance. I'm sorry to hear about the overheating issue. They are known as many manufacturers that mass produce their machines for bad TIM jobs. I didn't have my r2 ever shut off due to you overheat... I had overclocked till everything was too hot and the CPU at its thermal limit will shut the system down, tripping the ac adapters maximum wattage load will shut the system off and that's about it. When the gpu overheats too much they throttle like the CPUs but I haven't seen the system shut off for overheating they throttle to their lowest set MHz such as 150/100 memory/core. I don't remember the low power speeds honestly. But either way Dell probably gave you a bad setup of the ATi cards since they normally operate very dependably. AMD and Nvidia have great gpus these days, the premium either company charges is always going to be the opinion of the buyer determining if its worth that premium to them.

Yea I can understand that completely it all comes down to the facts these days companies can do or say things to make there product more marketable but what makes me angry is dell bought alienware which i believe was a good thing, but when a company does not test there product that we all pay so much for its a little disappointing! I think the AMD hassle i went though is probably a very rare one, but never the less it is something i will have to get over because Nvidia is slowing losing its advantage in the mobile field not just in performance but in price as well and i am a die hard Nvidia fan so!

  6. I would have to really see some real world comparisons. Personally the 6990M would rock my world through and through... I've used both ATI and NVIDIA and IMO I like the support I've got from ATi and Nvidia. I had experience with a few NVIDIA chipsets and had many blue screen errors due to driver issues... after quite sometime the driver issue was fixed with later driver revisions. But for the particular video card I was notified by mail of a class action lawsuit against NVIDIA for not meeting advertised speeds and performance. I did not join it and also did not suffer from some of the warnings of burned out gpus but I have not bought an Nvidia card since. Now pertaining to buying I would buy 6990m and if someone gave me them for free I would pick the GT580m because it is in fact more powerful...

Edit: I didn't see 580 I assumed you meant GT580m but if it wasn't what you meant please correct me. If not we should fix the title since the 580 is a desktop and not a fair comparison to the mobile gpus.

Yea i meant the 580m sorry about that!

  7. You mean if it was a perfect world? As long as the heat dissipation/power draw were equal I wouldn't really care, driver support has been very good from both sides, especially AMD has provided some excellent drivers recently.

    But probably AMD...

What issues did you have with AMD GPUs?

Haha yea my bad spelling error but the issues i had were they were getting way to hot and cause my R2 to shut off i think it was the thermal paste but never the less when you deal with one issue for 3 weeks before dell will admit its there fault you have to blame someone right? :Banane21:

  8. Oh i know the look on your face when you saw the title your thinking not another whos better! I was thinking about changing the question! Say its a perfect world and both of the video cards were free which would you choice and why? Me personally I would pick Nvidia because I have had very bad experiences with AMD/ATI what about you?

Edit: I am referring to the 580m sorry for any confusion!

  9. First I would like to say ive been roaming this forum for a short time now and it is a wonderful place a great deal better then other forums that shall not be named *cough* NBR *cough*. Never the less I thought I would post this to tell people about Alienware's Warranty.

My story begins with a m17x R1 I received it for a gift and like any self respecting gamer I was excited to say the least. The specs on the laptop were a core 2 duo t9600 @ 2.8. 5400 RPM hard drive a Nvidia 260m and a 1920X1200 LCD Screen 4gigs of RAM. Well to save me from typing a whole five pages of info it was giving me problems from the day I received it. Locking up during game play just not a good experience for my first alienware. Luckily I bought a Warranty the day I received it and called Alienware and they sent out a tech to replace the mobo and Video Card and problems still arose. So after reading and rereading my Warranty I found a clause that states that if a tech has been sent to your house more then twice and your PC has been sent to a depot to be fixed and still has issues you are to be issues a replacement (This is not how it was written just in non lawyer speak lol ). As I told alienware this they soon agreed and sent me a replacement

A M17x R2 with the specs of a Core I7 920XM @ 2.0 - 3.2 Turbo a 7200 HDD a AMD 5870 HD and a 1920X1200 RGB screen Nebula Red. I thought wow alienware isent so bad they gave me a huge upgrade well three months past with no issues at all and then a BIOS update came along and as I started to flash mid flash my computer powers off. Anyone in tech knows it is not a good thing I tried to turn it back on and not to my surprise the BIOS chip wasn't working properly. Called Dell they sent a Tech with a replacement for everything Mobo, video card, HDD, RAM you name it. After it would not boot up (bad mobo)

The tech told me a little secret since Dell and alienware a now one and the same alienware call centers are no more unless you can get the one in Costa Rica. This is the only call center thet "Alienware" has that is purely for Alienware laptops not XPS or any other computer. The tech told me how they will go to the ends of the earth to please you. I did not want to go through another month of not having a laptop like I did with my R1 so I called the number and spoke to the gentlemen the tech told me to, after I told him all the trouble I have gone though there was a pause and then the person said "I am So very Sorry Sir" and then he said you have been though more trouble then most people I know. and said here is what I am going to do for you. After about thirty minutes of talking and most of it was about video gaming a order was placed for a M17x R3 Core I7 2630QM @ 2.0 - 2.8 Turbo a Nvidia 580M a Samsung SSD and 8 gigs of dual Channel Ram along with the WLED 1920X1080 screen. The Manager told me he would upgrade me to a higher CPU but by regulations if they give you a max setting on one thing such as the 580m they can not upgrade anything else. (which I was fine with).

After all the talking he told me never to call the 1866 number ever again just to email him and it would get taken care of. Some people might view it has more of a downgrade R2 Vs R3 result but hey the way i see it i have one of the best mobile video cards and a SSD for free thats a good 500 - 800 dollar savings Im good with that. This is my story of how even though some dell reps can be stubborn or just hard headed know your rights as a costumer and always read the warranty. :D
