I was wondering if there was a way to get something like optimus to work with my dedicated gpu instead of an intel gpu.

Sending image data stuff from eGPU to the dGPU, Seeing as the eGPU is working in my Bootcamp Windows with an external display.

The other thing won't work, no way. Always keep in mind that we're kind of "misusing" stuff that was developed for other things. There are no notebooks that have a dGPU and would need the feature you describe. So no drivers that would provide something like that.

Have you tried installing the drivers by yourself instead of using the setup.exe(if you used it)?

So I finally succeeded installing Windows 8.1 on my other HDD, installed latest Bootcamp Support Software and I still get many driver errors which sucks(no sound, no iGPU, no dGPU).

Currently I have a SSD with MacOS and Windows 8.1 Bootcamp and a HDD with Windows 8.1 EFI + Shared Storage Space.

This took a lot of work but I still can't get my intel GPU to work in Windows no matter what method!

I think I might give up soon...

Does anybody know anything that might help?

Are you sure you've taken the right support software? There are different ones for your model and the 2013 models for example.

Has anyone tried the Akitio with stock Ac adapter and a low power gpu, like Maxwell Gt 720?

Most if not all implementations are using high end graphics cards because they either need it for GPGPU applications or gaming.

The card you wrote has a TDP of 19W. The Akitio AC adapter delivers 60W so this should be fine. If you keep below the 60W or 50W(10W are needed by the Thunderbolt part) it should be good to go.

You might switch to any other AC adapter with 2.5mm/5.5mm around. There are some with 90W or 120W, just take a look.

@w4vz: Ye, I looked into the folder of Europa Universalis IV and saw DLL files...seems they use some kind of wrapper which doesn't work too good. If I use the Iris Pro though, I've got no stuttering but of course even less fps with the same settings. Cities uses an adapted version of Unity. Insurgency is using Source Engine. Unity and Source Engine are available for OS X longer times, if I'm not wrong even longer than on Linux. Thus I'm wondering about the performance.

League of Legends is also not as stable regarding FPS with maxed out settings. On Windows it's super smooth and all but on OS X it's rather bad with FPS drops.

It's not really that important to me that I can game on OS X but I'm gaming pretty much and while doing this I'm "stuck" in Windows.

My first time I tried installing with EFI but I ran into many issues with the macbook, but mainly no iGPU, dGPU, or audio.

Here no gpu means there are errors and not invisible.

If I don't have an iGPU than this still won't work.

I tried looking around before but could't find anything good.

Have you seen any solutions to these issues?

If you don't install via Bootcamp you have to install the Bootcamp Support software by yourself after the Windows installation. This is most probably the reason for all of your not working hardware issues.

Did someone try to actually play games that need some power? I tried 3 games: Europa Universalis IV, Cities: Skylines and Insurgency. All games run with way less FPS than on Windows and Insurgency just kept crashing. Where FPS were around or stable 60 FPS I get down to 20(EU IV) + stuttering when scrolling or ~30-45 FPS for Cities and Insurgency. This is rather sad and this way the eGPU on OS X is only nice to use the external display without plugging cables in and out or if you'd use it for GPGPU which I don't do.

Would nice to read some other experiences regarding OS X. Maybe there is something wrong configured or anything. I'm using goalques script.

I tried to search but I couldn't find anything on my brand of laptop. I also looked at the first page but it's a little overwhelming and I'm not sure if I overlooked it or not. is it just a simple as connecting the mpcie adapter to the laptop as well as the expresscard? And into pe4cs x1+x2 ports respectively?

If you search for T510 with ctrl+f you'll find one occurrence in the list of implementations which points to a EC x1.1 2 Gbps implementation and the second occurrence shows a text which states that your notebook is actually capable of using both EC + mPCIe to achieve x2.1 4 Gbps connection.

Mate this egpu setup cost 600 for me it is lot of money and if it didn't work I would be really pissed. By the way for setup1.20 was really usefull.

^ this guy, I love him. He's like the incarnated nightmare of tech support. Where ever he is he just keeps asking random stuff directed at other people One service hotline can't answer him so he calls the other neat one which has nothing to do with his actual problem. At the end of the day a still sane chap asks the basic question like "Have you tried turning it off and on again?" or the classic "Are your cables plugged in?" and oh wow, his problem is resolved xD

No. He has got a 2012 15" MBPr.

You still have to fiddle the 2 x 6 pin PCIe plugs out of the Akitio case. You can drill a hole into the back of the case to get them out of there. In case of the Galax GTX 970 OC you can remove the pins of the plugs, fiddle the cables through the upper airflow slot and then you attach the pins to the plug again. That's what I did. I can now close the case but without other holes on the side/top the card gets way too hot. So you need to modify the case anyway if you want to use it closed and you might drill a hole for the cables then anyway.

Never heard of it before. Besides that, showing me this thing which is only mediocre in performance isn't proving wrong what I wrote. I didn't write that it's not possible to make, I wrote that it won't happen in terms of manufacturers or even Intel themselves pushing those NUC boxes with MXM graphics cards. There's no reason to. There will be enough of small form factor devices coming up if SteamOS and the "Steam Boxes" will be pushed on the market.

Apart from this, with the hopefully extended distribution of Thunderbolt(usual or USB-C plug) and official support of eGPUs, take a mobile quadcore Intel processor like what we've got in the Macbook Pro 15", HP ZBook, Thinkpad W540/541 etc, implement a sufficient cooling(maybe AiO water cooling) that doesn't sound like a departing airplane, at least the possibility for 8 GB RAM, M.2 slot for system storage, integrated wifi, LAN and give it, as the important part, a Thunderbolt slot in whichever form with eGPU support.

That's it. Put that in such a NUC box. No more need for crappy overpriced mobile GPUs if you can plug your desktop GPUs into such boxes. The Intel mobile quads are more than capable to compete with desktop Intel CPUs.

I confirm this problem. If the display connected to the eGPU is the main screen then every Silverlight content will show "plugin error". As long as the internal screen is the main one it's fine even on the eGPU display.

Have you mounted the EFI partition again...? Otherwise you surely can't find a thing.

Type "textedit /Volumes/EFI/EFI/Grub/grub.cfg" without quotes.

Alternatively you can also simply navigate to the mounted EFI partition with Finder. Maybe that's easier for you, you'd only need to double click the file then.

You're supposed to type these commands in the grub command view you get to see when you want to boot Windows...

Hello I have a problem when I select efi boot it is not booting into windows(8.1) and it is saying grub.

That's because you don't seem to be able to read and follow instructions on page 1.

Scroll down a bit and seach for "6. Troubleshooting (optional)". When you've found it follow 6.1, 6.2 and do 6.3 with every (hd,gpt) combination you're shown until you read something with EFI. Once you see something with EFI you remember the combination that brought you this result.

Then write again here if you don't figure out what to do next...

And btw, there's an edit button.

Read point 6. Carefully. It's all written down there, just followed it some days ago, also needed to change the partition to boot off because I've got an external hdd connected at boot.

Follow the instructions to find out which partition your EFI is on. Remember it. Edit your grub.cfg on your EFI partition in OS X and change the partition to what you remembered...

When selecting partition in OS X I copied the script provided by Evo. "System preferences >> Startup disk>>> ..." And it has a syntax error. Also I am running windows 7 pro. Could that be a factor as well? I also tried the set root= (hd0gpt1) in grub and nothing happens.

Dude, there is no script given by Evo*, so what are you talking about?. He's written the commands you need in his post and linked the needed OPTIMUS.dmg with the files you copy to your EFI partition. Windows 7 should be fine.

At "set root=(hd0gpt1)" there's a commata missing..."set root=(hd0,gpt1)". But, and that's the point, you're not supposed to copy that line. You need to find out which is the identifier of your EFI partition. That's what you remember and then edit in the grub.cfg on your EFI partition which you mount in OS X.

Have you got a MBR or GPT installation of Windows? Guess that's an important point.

I'm having trouble with my setup. I'm running a gtx680 inside an akitio Thunder 2 without the powered riser. The laptop is a 2011 MacBook Air. I have a psu hooked up to the gtx680. Nvidia drivers installed correctly and everything works fine with external monitor. However, I would like to use the internal screen which I know is disabled. I tried installing Optimus using Evo's efi guide, but I still keep booting into grub2 command. Please help!!

If you keep booting into Grub2 command then you haven't set the correct partition to boot of.

Why do you ask if you know it better? You have to decide if it's a waste of money. GTX 970 will still have more power than a GTX 960 but also will still cost more.

Yes, M.2 delivers double the bandwidth and thus will have a better performance. I just wrote it in my previous post...

i use eGPU 3 months ago and i know that eGPU for mPCIE/EC can't use full 100% power GPU, bandwith limited and i have question:

1. You know laptop have a pcie 2.0 or 3.0 have 2, 4, 8 or 16 lanes??

2. why exp gdc, pe4c, pe4l have16 lanes while laptop have limited bandwith???

1. No PCIe 3.0 notebooks so far. For more lanes you'd need more mPCIe slots or M.2/NGFF. M.2/NGFF slot delivers x2 2.0, so that would be a better choice because it's simpler than using 2 slots. Look for this if you want a new notebook.

2. They don't have 16 lanes. The slot you put the graphics card in is a x16 slot so you have a stable slot for your graphics card. The slot is electrical only connected via x1.

3. You'll have around 70-80% of the desktop performance of the card.

4. No. The only way to use the full power of a eGPU is by connecting it with all lanes. That's not possible for now with DIY eGPUs. We're limited to x4 2.0 with Thunderbolt 2.

5. It's meaning the Nvidia Optimus compression. Optimus enables a PCIe compression when using a x1 connection. So using a x2 2.0 with M.2 would already disable this compression but you have double the bandwidth compared to mPCIe or EC.
