After flashing the modded ultrabay VBIOS my SLI is back in business - thanks all for the work on that! - but I was wondering. Is it safe to flash the modded VBIOS only to the internal card as well? For example, to flash the modded BIOS, then the VBIOS separately, to get the same clocks on both cards? Or should I apply a differently modded system BIOS (modified with the desired VBIOS, naturally?) Sorry if this has been answered in the thread already, if it has been I missed it. Thanks!

Works great with the existing antenna. Much better performance and stability from the 7260 in my experience.

Thanks for this - I can confirm the SLI fix on the Y400 with the 650M.

I am curious as to how the problem lies in the VBIOS if SLI functions in earlier drivers (>=320.49) but not newer ones. I'm not knowledgeable about how the hardware and software interact to cause this problem, but if older software works then it seems like nvidia could patch, rather than requiring Lenovo (and, subsequently for us, svl7) to release updated VBIOS revisions. I am aware that this is niche enough that nvidia may not know about/decide to commit resources to this problem, as it only seems to affect the Y400/Y500 series as far as my research has seen, but it seems like it would be patchable - anyone know why it isn't? I'm just curious.

I ran some very basic ones much earlier in this thread somewhere and posted temps too. There was a significant benefit and the extra heat was manageable. The thing to keep in mind about the extra heat is that a) it's not doing any GPU engagement and the primary GPU shares the heatsink and synthetic benchmarks tend to generate more heat than standard gaming workloads.

I've got the same problem with the 2.04 and modded VBIOS in the second card. Not sure exactly who needs to update what, but my understanding is that Lenovo ultimately has to release a new BIOS to deal with the problem. Alternatively, you can revert back to some (very old) drivers Lenovo has posted on their site under the 8.1 support - it's something like driver 307.xx -if you're not running many recent games. That'll bring the SLI back in the interim.

I had issues with getting gigabit link (it would always go to 100Mb) until I upgraded to the latest drivers for the wired NIC. I'd recommend that as a next course of action if the problem returns or you have any other weirdness.

Flash the 2.04 modded BIOS. That will add the VBIOS for the integrated card. You have to download the modded VBIOS and flash the ultrabay card separately. Once you do that you can OC both cards.

Awesome, thanks. I know the heat situation might be a bit perilous, I would naturally repaste and so on to be as heat-efficient as possible. Anyone on this thread actually swapped one of these CPUs in and lived to tell the tale? - - - Updated - - - I second octiceps on this - I don't think this is physically possible. While I haven't -yet- opened my ultrabay GPU, I highly doubt the required RAMDACs are on the card, and even if they were there's no way for them to interface with the screen, so the built-in GPU will always be active. I don't think the drivers are built to accommodate a "pass-through" situation either - I tried that for giggles at one point with my desktop SLI setup and it didn't work. There was no way to configure it. I'm happy to be wrong on this but I don't think this is a setup that the hardware or software was built to implement.

I understand the CPUs in the Y400 series are socketed - has anyone out there had success in swapping that CPU out? Specifically, to something faster than a 3630QM? I know it's theoretically possible, but if anyone has concrete experience with a faster CPU in there I'd love to hear about it.

So far the 7260ac is working great for me. Much more stable than the stock 2230, as well. That card would give me random bluescreens all the time, weirdly.

Nice. I didn't need to enable computer browser or anything to prevent the BSODs, although I haven't stressed with many sleep/wake cycles or used the bluetooth much. It is fast and stable, though.

I have a client with a Y400 and wifi issues with the 2230. Are there any dual-band cards that are on the Lenovo whitelist? I'd rather not install the modded BIOS on his machine as he's not too tech savvy.

Initial experience with the 7260ac has been positive. I don't have AC gear to test it with at the moment, just high-grade dual-band N, but the system is stable with the card inside, which is more than I can say for the 2230 - I had a lot of BSODs with that one for some reason, despite not having any kind of weird setup or driver issues. Latest Intel driver installed just fine.

I ordered the card, decided to give it a shot since it was cheap on Amazon. I'll report back with my findings.

I installed the Synaptics driver and my Fn key functionality didn't change at all...

Lenovo sells an Ultrabay cooling fan - I've heard mixed reviews, but it's relatively cheap so I might pick one up. The other thing you might consider if you're comfortable with taking the machine apart is repasting the CPU, GPU, and chipset. I haven't done my Lenovo yet but I've done it for other laptops and it can drop temps significantly. I suspect it will work pretty well in these machines since the heatsink appears to be halfway decent, and capable of dissipating the heat at the increased rate a well-repasted CPU will feed it. Also, if you find you're hitting these temps when the machine isn't under significant load, you can always try using the Throttlestop utility to downclock the CPU or disable turbo boost for that session. This would have the added benefit of cutting power utilization, always nice if you're on battery.

I had a similar experience on my Y400, but then I installed the latest Synaptics driver from their site - it made a HUGE difference. It's still not an ideal trackpad by a long shot (I'm spoiled by my MBP...) but the sensitivity is fixed without having to turn it up all the way and living with the associated twitchy movement. I just ran some quick and dirty numbers on this myself. Using the TS Bench tool, 8 threads 1024M, without TS on, I got a temp spike at the beginning up to 90C then sharply dropping back to 74-80C with some variations depending on which sensor you looked at. The bench came in at 517 seconds. With TS on, it scored 391 seconds, but max temps hit 92-98C and stayed there for the duration. Ambient temp is 23C.

Has anyone used the new 7260ac in the y400 with this mod? I'm wondering if it has the same issue as the 6235, where fast boot has to be shut off to prevent BSODs. Ideally I can leave fast boot on...

Has anyone kept any records of temps on the Y400 using throttlestop as opposed to without it? I'm wondering how much hotter it runs on average with the small laptop heatsink in there.
