  1. What a nice timing. Promising OC capable driver to return next month...

just in time to quieten the angry mob and from spoiling nVIDIAs March 3rd event with bad publicity...

Well I wanted to confirm this first hand, but now that I have, here You go!

NVIDIA has begun shipping new GTX9xxM cards with a vBIOS that blocks core overclocking!

Looks like OC will soon be a thing from the past regardless of the driver used:

(Of course we can still just use an older vBIOS or one of our Mods to get around it, but it looks like this is the direction in which they are headed...)

Nvidia sucks on so many levels right now, I don't even know where to start. :76:

  2. Yep, you're right. I just gave it a high limit in case he wants to experiment. I will be working on the power target and voltage later since I was in a rush to go eat lunch. It would also help if I had a tester. I am just changing one thing at a time because I don't want to screw up and destroy anything with an unfamiliar card :)

Thanks for the vbios mod! Sorry if I wasn't clear when I posted it though. I actually don't need it modded. I was working on the machine to set it up for someone else at work and thought I would post a vbios dump from it in case anyone was interested in having it. :)

  3. Hi svl7 - I have download all four of the MSI 680m vbios from the second post. Each one when I click on the zip file after I have downloaded them says that the file is invalid. I am able to manually extract the contents though. Each file inside does not seem to have the .rom extention, but part of the filename itself as the extention. I've tried this from two different computers with the same result.

If I rename each vbios file with a .rom extention, I get some very persistent warnings from nvflash when attempting to flash that make me think something is wrong. The messages are not the normal run of the mill messages that you see when flashing. Am I losing my mind, or is there something wrong with the files?

  4. ****

Since this seems a popular request I have added some overvolted Dell 680m vbios to the second post. Clevo and MSI will follow.

A voltage increase will always result in higher temps. Keep that in mind. Use at your own risk.

If you're reading this thread you certainly haven't missed all the latest overclocking results of @Brian @johnksss and @Mr. Fox, to name the top scorers. A lot of people seem to be under the impression that it just takes a nicely tuned vbios and moving the slider all the way up to get a top score, users have even complained that they can't reach those levels as they get limited by the voltage.

Now let me clarify some things when it comes to benching: There's much more behind getting a record than just upping the sliders. While you can get a fantastic score by just overclocking it on hit or miss by using one of my vbios versions in the second thread, you definitely can't expect to beat those records by doing so. Tweaking the system and optimizing performance isn't just as simple as grabbing a software tool for overclocking and a special vbios, it needs a lot of tinkering, experimenting, patience and experience. Also benching is always a kind of competition, all in fun of course, but there's no point denying that once you start to like it, you will want to get the best score possible, or beat a certain other user. If you ask me, that's what makes it highly interesting and entertaining. However, since it is kind of a competition, and it needs a lot of work to come up on the top, you can't expect people to just share all their secrets with you. At least you can't expect that from me (the vbios should already be more than enough help :P)

@mw86, Johnksss, Mr. Fox as well as other users here have shared and posted highly valuable information regarding overclocking, I recommend to read it. You have to bench / optimize your system yourself, just copying the numbers and settings of someone else won't work, I can guarantee you that. To be on top you'll need to do some work.

If you just want a very decent score in order to boast in front of people with the stock vbios - well then you can just up the sliders a bit and have fun, true. Real benching however is a different story.

And in case you run into throttling issues I can already answer a question in advance - as long as you're using a vbios from the second post of this thread it definitely isn't caused by the vbios. It won't throttle (unless maybe at insanely high temps).

Bought you a few beers, sir. Last week actually. :)

Nonetheless, I've said it before and I will say it again, thank you very much for everything that you have done and will continue to do (hopefully) in the modding community. Without your efforts, none of us would be able to push these systems to the performance levels that are being seen.

  5. I don't know if I post in the right section, browsing the site for 2 hrs now. My problem is the following: I have an Acer notebook with a Geforce 630m 2 GB DDR3 that has some kind of throttling problem. When it reaches 75 degrees Celsius it throttles from 797 Mhz to 118 Mhz and then to 475 Mhz where it remains forever. I am not interested in any overclocking, just want to stop throttling or maybe make it throttle at a higher temperature. Is there any way I can mod the VBIOS so that I can do that? These GPUs are designed to run at full speed at higher temperatures, I don't understand why Acer set them to throttle at 75 degrees. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

My first suggestion would be to see if the fan intake and fan outlet is blocked by dust of any kind. If it is, it will prevent the cooling system from keeping the GPU temps under control. Also, it may not be a bad idea to take the bottom panel off and blow a can of compressed air into the fan itself to blow out the dust. Not the whole can obviously, but just a little to clean it out. :)

  6. A little request to people who only just got their M18x R2 - can you please check the vbios version of your graphics card and let me know which one is on there? Doesn't matter which card(s) you got in your system. Just wondering whether AW already updated it in the units which are shipped at the moment.

I'm no longer running the stock vbios (don't know what version it is) but I made a backup of it before I flashed both cards (680m). Would you like a copy of it?

  7. Hi everyone! New here but wanted to chime in with some feedback and questions.

Just picked up a M18xR2 with A05 BIOS and GTX680M SLI. Tried using afterburner to change core clocks but couldn't - only memory clocks worked. Went and downloaded this guy which gave me a modest boost to 819, but still couldn't get afterburner to change core clocks.

I've read that the M18x bios is preventing software OC, so I flashed from A05 to A07 - afterburner still won't work. Flashing A08 failed - loss of sound hardware after reboot.

What I'd like to do is go past 819 on core with a simple tool like afterburner. Is there a particular vbios I should be using, or has Dell crippled things with a lousy system bios? Any/all help appreciated!

BTW: I'm more than happy to test a vbios from svl7 on my system and post results!

I would recommend trying the vbios named "Dell 680m - 850 base - 889 boost - OV - OC" on the first page. That one seems to work well for me. I've been able to run the core at 1000 and the memory at 1200 with it. Afterburner does not show the core frequency increase, but it shows the memory. If using Afterburner does not change the clocks (you will only know if it's working by running benchmarks and comparing the before and after) then possibly also try nVidiaInspector to see if that works for you?

  8. Yeah, I'm actually inclining to recommending not to flash to the newer bios versions, even though I usually always appreciated updates and fixes - the downsides of this is just pretty big, you get locked out of your system.

Still, it's possible to flash the unlocked A08 when you come from A03, but once you're on a A07 / A08 (modified or not) it will be more difficult to flash any modified image.

Thanks. I'll just stick with what I have then for the time being. It seems to be more trouble than it's worth to upgrade, with no real benefit. I probably will cross flash to the unlocked A03 though once you put the Intel 11.6 ROM inside of it. In case I have not said so already, thank you very much for everything you have done with all of the bios/vbios files!
