y510p laptop cannot boot to BIOS

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

my y510p laptop cannot boot to BIOS, keyboard lights are on and fan is spinning with black screen.

It started with a slow BIOS (3-4secs) show up time. Only thing I found was that my hdd had gotten some bad sectors.

Now it won't boot BIOS at all, UNLESS I PUT MY LAPTOP INTO A FREEZER FOR SOME TIME!:02:

After 'freezing' it, bios loads quick and I am able to boot into windows with no problems until I shutdown/restart the laptop and have to do it all over again.

I tried removing the hdd to boot to bios, but the issue persists.. I have to freeze it every time for bios to show up - which seems crazy..

Anyone heard of a solution for this?

UNLESS I PUT MY LAPTOP INTO A FREEZER FOR SOME TIME!

Ok, if that worked multiple times I am amazed. Who told you to do that? or WHere did you learn that?

Have you tried doing this with the battery removed? I have a y510p also, and to boot into the UEFI/BIOS menu with the machine off, press the button on the left side of the machine near the power adapter port.

Do you have a 2nd GPU in the ultrabay slot? Remove it then try again.

Stop putting your laptop in the freezer. seriously, you shouldn't have to do that. and i wouldn't be surprised if water could condense in places you wouldn't want. (after taking it out)

I'm sure there is a verbose boot option, or diagnostic log available on the machine to help figure out what is causing the 3-4 second delay.

My guess would be a hardware problem, which is why i recommended removing the ultrabay card. bad CPU/memory can also result in similar behavior, although this model may beep or have a special indicated for bad cpu/memory/etc

I have a lenovo y500. In order to boot into the bios there is a small button on the left side behind the charging port i have to push when the computer is off. My recommendation is to check both sides of your y510 while it is off to see if you can find this button. If you can find it when the computer boots it should give you a few options. Loading the bios should be one of them.

I agree with the above posts. Even in an off state if you press the small button, known as the Novo Button, usually either next to the power button or the charger plug area, it should take you straight to the BIOS. If that doesn't work then something may be terribly wrong with your computer which could require a lot of new hardware.
