  1. also might be worth mentioning if this is your first build.... most motherboards have a chipset that is compatible with either amd or NVidia (gpu) based video cards. this is in addition to the major design for an amd or intel cpu (main processor).. some are made deliberately to cross over (eg -an amd processor but an NVidia video card or an intel processor but an amd video card). so if you really are in love with a video card, you might take that into consideration when choosing your motherboard. some claim to do both, but a quick check of user reviews on a more educated site will reveal lots of builders finding bugs when using video cards on motherboards that have their chipsets based on the competitor brand chips...lol, so it's worth checking compatibility there as well....

    Er.....

I've built countless systems and never heard of this before. Do you have some reference pages I could read?

  2. In all the game benches I've seen so far the 690 and the 7990 are within a few FPS, which makes sense given the cores they're based on. They're obvious competitors, nvidia just got their card out way earlier.

I agree about both points on compute power - nvidia definitely nerfed it, which sucks for those hoping to save money on pro cards, but it's not terribly relevant to most people.

  3. I would also strongly advise you to custom build, less than one day of watching youtube clips and taking your time will save you HEAPS.

Unreal raises a good point, what resolution is the monitor you're using?

This is a rough idea of how much more powerful you could make the build.

  4. No haswell for 2011, it's coming on 1155 first. 2011 is still waiting for IB-E which will likely be irrelevant (Slightly faster clock for clock but probably won't OC like SB-E).

A 4770K Won't work in a Rampage because it's a different socket, it physically will not fit. Just wanted to make sure that's 100% understood. The Asus Maximus V Extreme is very similar to the Rampage, but will accept the 4770k.

If this build is for gaming I would strongly suggest staying with socket 1155, haswell will be out in June if you want to wait that long.

Where will you be ordering from? I'm happy to do a "What I would buy" list, but I need a starting point. Preferably a store with an english option. :)

  5. 3930K is a monster heat producer when overclocked, I have one in my watercooled system. :)

EDIT: Ignore me, I didn't even realise the 3970 had a higher TDP! :62:

Either way, if you're shooting for 4.5+ it's going to get VERY hot.

EDIT2: On an unrelated note, I wish Clevo used the Alienware type connector to the laptop, I'm always slightly worried I'll snap the little pins of or butcher the holes they slot into.

  6. ^ I think that's the first negative review I've ever heard of an EVGA card. I like them because they still warranty cards that have been under water as long as you put it back to original before sending it to them.

Hope the ASUS serves you well, my old GTX 280 that is still powering my cousins BF3 rig (ultimate cheapskate) is an Asus, loved that card.. :)

  7. Ahhh, fair point, I missed that you specified ideapad. I've actually never seen a lenovo other than a thinkpad. ;)

OT: I would never buy a laptop that didn't work on the assumption that I could fix it, that just introduces huge risks. You'll want to focus on GPU power, so IMO a system with an i5 and 660m will be much better than an i7 and a 640m. I don't know the market enough to suggest specific models, so I'll leave you with the thought that on a budget system you need to spend on essentials rather than luxuries - this means best possible GPU and CPU with no excess spending on extra RAM, SSDs etc.

  8. Close enough, shipping to Gallifrey must be a bitch. ;)

As for your BL2 issues, I could swear I've seen benches of titans pulling 150+fps. I know a guy with dual titans and a dell U3011 who owns BL2, let me know what res you're running and I'll ask him to do a test.

  9. @Nofew, mate, I love some of your ideas! Some I definitely think are pie in the sky (Nobody is going to invest that much in optical drives at this point), but some have genuine merit. An IR emitter is an obvious one that should be there, while the idea of a colour shifting bezel and subtle vibration feedback is really interesting.

Just wanted to add also, I've seen some posts around the forums that aren't technically spam, but are one line on something that doesn't really contribute much to the discussion, trying to hit the 5 post minimum to download whatever it is they're obsessing over. Our mods do a great job with this generally, but it clearly won't be needed in this case! Rarely have I seen such an epic post from a new member. You are truly welcome, especially if your posts continue in this vein. :D

PS: Putting a drink down? On a $4000 laptop? Con-fi-dence.....

  10. Don't you go telling me Bioshock 1 wasn't totally epic! :what:

I'm not going to get into better or worse since I haven't played Infinite yet, but Bioshock was a fucking amazing game.

#2 on the other hand......... Let's just say if infinite isn't better than that, I will be extremely displeased.

  11. I'm extremely new at this so please forgive me if this may be a stupid question. What is the difference between 3dmark06, 3dmark11, and 3dmark vantage?

Don't worry, we all start somewhere. :)

As far as the three versions, it's about the release date in the following order - 3dm06, vantage, 3dm11, then the brand new 3dmark which has three tests, the one you'll mostly see is called fire strike.

They get progressively more demanding as you move through the years and some take a certain level of hardware to work properly.

3dm11 for instance requires DX 11 capable hardware to run.

Fell free to ask any more questions you may have. ;)
