Since we didn't have one yet, this is it. I'll update this post with the newest driver releases, and news for the R3. Please keep all M17x-R3 posts confined to this thread if possible.

That would be amazing hope you try that out with the next version of unlocked R2 bios and post your results.
Hopefully TheWiz gets the new version out and doesn't stall on development.

I think TurboTalon found a better way to do the retention mod. He used the normal heatsink without the c-clip change and just applied washers at the bottom to create more tension. That way you can use all 4 screws and still perform the mod using the same steps (e.g. tweaking the screws torque while watching prime95 on screen).

Yes there are going to be some additional tests run that I didn't mention on the front page. Some of those include:
- M17x-R2 with 720qm processor and single GPU vs R3
- M17x-R2 with 720qm and crossfire vs R3
- M17xR2 with SSD (depending if I can get one or stam/michael arrange it) vs R3 with SSD
- Overclocked M17x-R2 vs Overclocked R3 (GPU only since 2630 can't be oc'd with TS afaik)
- OC'd M17x-R2 CPU vs stock R3 CPU (I'm sure the 2630qm will lose here but its just to see how badly)
This review is most likely going to be split up into 3 different articles since there is going to be a lot of content.

I think an M14x makes a lot of sense and I think Dell will replace the M15x with a thin M14x down the line. That's why we haven't heard anything at all about an M15x refresh and someone I know that works closely with Dell told me with confidence that the M14x is coming. I bet Dell is waiting to launch the M14x and M18x together. Welcome to Tech|Inferno, Infernia

Haha I knew you'd love it. The game is one of my all time favorites and I look forward to ME3 more than I do BF3.

Lately nothing..just whatever is on the radio. Guess I'm not really a huge music fan.

Pretty sweet, Billy. You should create a gallery and put it in there.

June seems like the most likely introduction date with shipment by July/August.

So I've got an incoming R3 with 6970M. Can't wait to do some benchmarks + transplant the 6970M in the R2 to see if it works.
-
That's going to be one aspect I plan to cover with the R3 review vs R2. It won't likely be in the R2's favor. Stam, ship me an ssd? lol
-
and to think all that, with a single gpu!
That's progress for you.

A 485M would have been preferable but it's power draw and heat output is a lot higher.

Today we put in an order for an Alienware M17x-R3 with the following specs:
CPU: 2630qm
Ram: 4gb
Screen: 17.3" WLED 1080p
GPU: AMD 6970M
Wifi: Intel 6300
If there is anything specific you'd like to see in the review, let us know and we'll try our best to accommodate that request. You can read about what we plan to include in the review on the front page.

They will learn the cold hard truth when it's in someones hands. In dx11 it may match 5870 xfire in games like metro but dx10 (majority of games) it's going to lose.

AHEM! points at new avatar and user title.

lol @ post, the photos were a nice touch. Alienware made me a fan with the R2 but they disappointed me with the R3. If the M18x is released and lives up to the R2's legacy, then I'll gladly proclaim myself as an AW fanboy again.

Pretty decent vantage GPU and I like the SB CPU score. Are you going to upgrade to the 6970M?
-
I'm finally going to repaste tonight and tweak my retention mod. Then I'll install the 11.2 + CAP and run some benchmarks though I doubt I'll ever get my GPU clocks as high as stam since he's got some golden shower samples.

I need one of those, burning calories is bad news for me.
Especially if you have to work for big HUNGRY computers.

I wonder when California might break off and tip over? I should move soon. Fuck who knows, if the moon goes off tilt one day, the entire earth might tip over and fall into the sun.

Hey Stamatisx - one question with the reg tweak - does your turbo multi scale depending on the amount of cores used as well? or is it only scaling to the value for 4 cores?
I would like to keep my 4ghz+ single core performance as well as the higher multi core performance.
-Ash
It will always scale all 4 and won't apply to a single core alone.

Finally some news regarding this game has surfaced. I've posted a few videos on the front page so in case you missed them, you can find the posts here:
- EA shows off first footage of Battlefield 3 | Tech|Inferno
- Leaked Battlefield 3 Video From GDC | Tech|Inferno
The game is shaping up to be one hell of a sequel and hopefully the long wait will have been worth it! Of course I'll be buying the game the day its released (hopefully on steam).

So I started a watercooling project back in 2006-2007 and my goal was to build a system that looked great, was near silent and did a great job with cooling. After researching all the available blocks, reservoirs, radiators, tubes etc I decided to build a lian li based water cooling system with custom imported parts from aquacomputers that included the reservoir and fan grill. I also used danger den blocks (maze I believe) for the GPU/CPU and a bix2 radiator with dual 120mm fans. The setup worked amazingly well, it was quiet and the temperatures were always 30c and below with overvolting + overclocking. I no longer have this particular system (got lost when I moved to medical school) but it still brings back fond memories and I plan to build another one when ivy bridge is released.
