  1. The blue PCB gtx 1070s have known issues, these card were specifically produced for clevo's. The black PCB 1070s should work properly. Some experience throttling which can be solved by setting your machine to hibernate and waking it back up.

That being said, I've done this upgrade around 4 years ago. Back then the upgrade was worth putting the effort in but nowadays I would recommended purchasing a new laptop.

The process of upgrading to a 1070 isn't just inserting the card and plugging a 120hz 3d panel in.

Let me sum up all the steps for you:

    • You would need to edit the case, since the 1070 would hit a part and it would short circuit (I recommend taking the whole laptop apart, if you accidentally hit your motherboard during this process, you're back to square one)
    • The 2 mxm sliders on the left and right would have to be removed since the card is thicker than the HD7970m
    • A 3D panel is required
    • You would need to mod your bios to a custom A11 version that allows you to set your videotype to GPU only
    • You need to mod the heatsink for it to properly fit on the 1070, if you mount the heatsink as is and screw it in place, you'll destroy your 1070

Every step has a risk and requires time. Taking the costs of a 1070, 3D panel and possibly the tool necessary to mod your casing, in my personal opinion it wouldn't be worth it in the end.

But in case you really want to, I can answer all your questions and show you pictures of the complete process.

  2. Very epic my dude. I'm rocking the exact same build with the added addition of replacing the black layout for the nebula red one. I also have a 3 copper heatsink for the cpu, paired with the m14x fan and liquid metal my cpu runs at 4.5 ghz. Unfortunately after 1-5 minutes it clocks down to 3.9~4.0, even though the temps are between the 80-85 which is perfectly acceptable.

I have no clue why your gpu fan doesn't work properly though. The only explanation that I can think of is because you might need the unlocked bios for that, which I have.

  3. I don't think the heatsink you mentioned will work, the R5 has a slightly different dimention, a 4th pipe won't fit on top. I don't know what the experience is from other users but the heatsink I bought from taobao gave me a 12 degrees drop compared to the stock heatsink (tested with mx-4 thermal paste) after that I applied the thermal grizzly liquid metal which gave another 15 degrees drop.

  4. My mistake then, guess the gtx980m has a UEFI vbios. I can't really think of anything right now honestly, the strings look correct, you got testmode on and since you can get into windows the bios settings should be correct so it's not a bios-related issue.

I guess you can try to use an other section instead of section160, maybe try section 154. What you might also need to replace is section153 and section154

    %NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.0580.1028% = Section153, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_05801028

    %NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.0580.1028% = Section154, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_05801028

    NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.0580.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M"

Try using these strings, if that doesn't work then I'm completely out of ideas.

  5. Yeah those are the correct BIOS settings, now turn testsigning on using this guide https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/install/the-testsigning-boot-configuration-option

And try to install the drivers again

Oh a realisation just hit me, the gtx980m might have a legacy vbios since that's the last card which still supports legacy, so if this doesn't work you can try setting the bios to legacy instead of uefi.

  6. And you modified the inf for the lastest drivers which is 398.36?

Also try using testmode instead of turning driver enforcement off, driver enforcement turns back on the moment you reboot your system so that's very unreliable

And did you modify the correct inf being the nvdmi.inf?

I quickly modified the inf with the correct strings, try if that works https://www79.zippyshare.com/v/NCgbpgSZ/file.html

  7. Section24 applies for the specific guy I responded to, section24 being the gtx765.

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_05511028 if this is your ID then we can split those numbers up into 3 groups

    GPU CODE

    Laptop model code

    Laptop manufacturer code

Now I just downloaded the latest drivers for the gtx980m to use as an example, if you use CTRL+F you want to look for this string

NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.0709.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M" <- this one has the 13D7 ID which is your gpu and it has the 1028 ID which means it's DELL, you only got to change the 0709 to 0551

Now we will use CTRL+F on the code from that string being NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.0709.1028

    Then we find this section %NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.0709.1028% = Section160, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_07091028

Now we only need to change the laptop model code to yours:

    %NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.0551.1028% = Section160, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_05511028

    NVIDIA_DEV.13D7.0551.1028 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M

^ these 2 strings are the ones you need to paste in your inf.

Keep in mind though every time you download a new version of the nvidia drivers the section changes but once you know the proces it's pretty easy to mod it yourself
