My i7 now downcocks after about two minutes at prime95, would repasting the CPU (and GPU, why not if i'm already inside the machine) with MX-4 prevent the cpu from downclocking?

The core clock starts at 3.1GHz but when temps are going to 90C running prime95, the CPU downclocks to 2.3GHz

Did you check what temps you were getting? It's quite possible that it was throttling (downclocking) due to high temperatures. I'm going to give a ball park and say anything ~70-80+ (assuming the laptop's surrounding temperature is room temperature and the fan is unobstructed) then repasting might be a good idea. If you're close to 70, like high 60s, I wouldn't worry too much about it, but above 80 is trouble (i think ).

Also, if you're like me and use this laptop as a desktop replacement, then you might want to try and take off the bottom cover and place the laptop over a nice cooling pad. I have personally used Thermaltake's 23massive cs and recently upgraded to CM Storm SF 19 with no regrets and my temperatures usually stay idle at ~35-45. I'm talking about CPU temps btw.

Hey, I know this thread is a bit old, but I have some questions about the heatsink and repasting:

-- Are thermal pads the square piece of (what seems to be) rubber/wax that sits on top of the cpu/gpu and lies between the applied paste and and copper heat sink? And I think this may have been answered but I'll ask again just to be sure it was the same question, it's okay to remove right? Under what circumstances would it not be okay?

-- Earlier when I first repasted and disassembled my y580, I came across a piece of tape/plastic that sat over the motherboard, what would happen if I removed that as well?

The reason I'm asking these questions is because after I repasted using Arctic Silver 5, the temps went way down, but now it is getting a tad bit hotter than it was before the repasting. I'm trying to find out if that is because the thermal pad was damaged (some pieces of it came off when removing old paste), or because the tape/plastic didn't lay over the motherboard completely flat (like it was before, part of it doesn't stick anymore). Or maybe I just simply put too much paste (I put about 1/4 the amount shown in the OP, only on the CPU and GPU though).

I tried to flash back to svl7's 2.07 bios, in order to confirm being able to do it, but I received an error message saying, "The version of rom file isn't newer than version of bios." If someone knows how to resolve this, please share.

I flashed the 1.15 vbios and it is a little too hot for me to handle/control. Would it be safe to flash the 1.125 vbios over the 1.15 vbios using the same method I used to flash the 1.15 vbios or is there another procedure I should do to down volt it.

I'm not sure if this is worth mentioning, but I previously had svl7's 2.07 unlocked bios and flashed your 1.15 overvolted bios afterwards.

TLDR; do i just flash the 1.125 vbios on my y580, which is currently using the 1.15 vbios, or do I need to do something special?

I've seen a lot of 1.15v bios in this thread but they all seem to be only for bios versions 8.0x

I read through nearly all of the posts and I'm rather confused as to which bios I am able to (safely) flash. I already flashed the 2.0X (when I check msconfig for my bios version, it says 2.06, although I think I've seen 2.07 on some other sensor software, gpuz/nvidia inspector or something ~anyway). I want to flash to the 8.0X unlocked bios and what confuses me is, I've seen some posts saying it's okay to go from 2.0X to 8.0X bios, and some posts I see that it's not okay. Would someone mind giving me insight as to what the risks are, if any, for flashing TO 8.0X, FROM 2.0X unlocked bios? I'm not too familiar with what an EC is (referring to the original post), so please, explain/answer my question like I'm 5!

Figured out what I did wrong.

Look at this image:

To reduce number of cores which windows will use at next boot you have to:

1. Turn on msconfig

2. Go to second tab (I have Windows 7 PL so its called ROZRUCH - start)

3. Select Advanced Options

4/5. Select number of cores you want to use at next boot.

This is how I lost my cores, and unnecessary reinstalled my windows.

Strange; if you are saying that you did it successfully then I want to know more of what specifically you did. I tried this when I first received my Y580, and tried to set it to 8, but when I restarted, windows failed to start and had to reinstall. Same thing happens when I try a number lower than 4. I had to reinstall five times trying different numbers before I gave up lol.

So, the download link that I posted earlier, is that a volt mod for 660m or does it just allow further overclocking?

Here, this should give you 1GHz default 3d clock, no more stupid boosting and a higher overclocking limit.

Please let me know how it works, some screenshots would be nice.

I'm afraid i'll have to take my y580 to a lenovo repair center, and that may take a while, so if you know of any ways i could revert the bios on my own would be really helpful

I went through the EXACT situation. Start the computer, and then immediately start tapping the hell out F2 (just kidding, just get into BIOS), then...

IIRC, you tap: left, enter, left, enter, F10, left, enter. If you're computer doesn't restart, then you need to try right a bunch of times instead of left, if it still doesn't restart then you're doing something wrong, or maybe you did more than just change the primary display to pci.

If that does not work, then replace the underlined with: tap right a bunch of times, at least 10.

Basically, what you are doing with the sequence of keystrokes is trying to get to the "Load default settings" and then "save and quit" (F10), and the default answer for "are you sure XXXXX" is no.

Anyways, good luck! I remeber when I was in a panic when nothing would display to the screen lol. Oh, and btw, you can download the pics of the menus from earlier posts, open it up on a diff comp/phone and do it from there (that is how i did it, now i just basically memorized it).

I installed the Lenovo Y480 / Y580 BIOS version 5DCN39WW (V2.06) [unlocked]. excellent! But there is a problem. I can not change the fan speed depending on the temperature. In the BIOS change but really do not.

There's a whole section for temperature and fan control on the new bios. Try peeking around more.

Do you say this because you found how to correctly control fan speeds and are being cryptic or have you not tried o.O
