Look's like i can't.
QuotePrepare an USB stick which can boot DOS. If you don't know how to do this, follow this short guide:
First download the attachment from below and extract it (i.e. on your Desktop)
bootable_disk.zip......make sure you have the following selected...
I can't select in Rufus a folder "win98_files". It's offering only FreeDOS, ISO image, DD image...

O.K., i will try.

I have got Transcend JetFlash 110 (4Gb) it's USB v2.0. So that's problem solved.

Can't install it coz it requires intel sandy/ivy bridge graphics.
Well... your Y510P have got Intel Core i7 4700MQ with Haswell. =)
I have got Intel Core i7 3630QM Ivy Bridge, but... stuck with making bootable flash drive for flashing bios...

I have got problem with USB Flash Drive. I simply can't make a USB flash drive bootable. I got errors from HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool v2.1.8.
Error
QuoteFailed to format the device
After that Windows 10 see it as empty (0 bytes). I can easy restore it and system see it fine. But if i start HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool again i got another error.
Error 2
QuoteDevice media is write-protected
I tested everything - run as administrator, magic keys in Regedit - nothing is working. I can't make it bootable.

You said that you've tried your ancient AMD card on a desktop too. Did you pre-install the same version driver on your Y500 which used on the desktop?
Nope. I don't think i can pre-install Radeon drivers. Installer look's for connected hardware (Radeon VGA) to choose and install proper driver.
When i am tested Radeon in desktop i am installed correct driver manually via Device Manager because Radeon X700 is too old (i am useing legacy driver v10.2). I simply selected proper *.INF file. When VGA is connected via adapter i simply can't install it before shutdown.
1 hour ago, David 'SOAP' Washington said:If you didn't, plz try it again just in case. I wanna check that whether the Windows behaved normally or not, and is it just a 40secs shutdown without any other error.
O.K., i will try.
1 hour ago, David 'SOAP' Washington said:And what device did you successfully add on it without shutting down again???
None. I have got only one Radeon and it's old X700. Yeah it's old and outdated, but it's working (i am confirmed it on Desktop). There is no reasons to buy something more new.
1 hour ago, David 'SOAP' Washington said:Do you have any other 1.05 rom to make a try? Maybe the old version will works with it.
Nope. Also i don't see any good reasons to backflash to old BIOS. Movement should be forward.
1 hour ago, David 'SOAP' Washington said:What's more, I think that you will backup your BIOS out in a ROM file after all, would you like to try to find out whether the onborad nvidia card's hardware ID can be found in the BIOS hex value or not??? I'm on a business trip these days, I didn't carry my Y500 with me, it's too heavy for a business trip, I carried my T430s instead.
I will try modded BIOS v2.04 by svl7 and after that need to dig more deep inside, but i don't think i will do it by myself. I have got Y500 and it's one and only my Laptop. =)

Do you mod Bios?
No, not yet. First tests was on default BIOS v2.04. I will test Modded BIOS later on this week. I need to setup USB flash drive for flashing svl7 BIOS, read all instructions.
-
O.K., small update.
Everything is connected (Ultrabay adapter, Radeon X700, PSU, External Monitor) - result - System is shutdown power.
It's shutdown when i am in Windows, when at system recovery mode (F8) and when i am at BIOS.
There is no any errors in Event Viewer (system).
So, standard BIOS v2.04 (and EC v2.04) without MODs isn't working.
INFO from Device Manager:
QuoteDevice Manager displays the following message in the Device Properties dialog box, on the General tab, in the Device Status text box:
This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
It's also mention that "Starting driver don't match with video driver which pass POST verification" (or something like that).
I think POST verification is at BIOS side.

try the video card.
I tested it separetely on Desktop PC at my work. Even played CS:S a bit. It starting and working well... maybe too loud cooler, but hey... 11 years old VGA! So, video card is good and working, how it feel youself in Laptop with adapter - we will find out soon.

Back in Bussiness
Power board received and replaced;
CPU cooler bought and replaced (too loud sound and vibration);
Also i am bought today Palit Radeon X700 PCI-E for test (just for $6.80!), plus i am already have got small TV to use it as external monitor.
All i need is disconnect old PSU from my desktop and connect everything together and cross my fingers.
I will try to do it tomorrow.

Any updates?
BTW, what Bios version is it on you laptop?
Hi, not yet, BUT, i am also have got good news - part for my laptop is in my country already. I hope i will receive it on this week. It's depend on Russian post now.
I don't really remember my BIOS version, but it should be last one from official Lenovo site - so, probably v2.04. Windows version is 10 Pro.
-
I think we should stay focus on BIOS (and last version one). Since there was whitelist on WLAN - there probably whitelist on eGPU (GT 650m and GT 750m).
Yeah, it's possible (i think) to flash wrong data in GTX 1060 (and allow Y500 to see it as GT 650m), but if it will work - we need to swap all the settings from NVIDIA drivers from GTX 1060 to GT 650m.
And do it every time NVIDIA update drivers. It's wrong way on my opinion. Need to dig deeply in Y500 BIOS. Find exact problem and find people to solve it. svl7 did good, but if he can't help us anymore - we have to find someone who can.

Another isse i find with the adapter is the ability to use internal display. As external display is a big no-no for me, i started to look around how does eGPU do it and well i think this will aplly to this adapter as well.
So read this from the Driver section(its for nvidia cards but it should explain how laptop displays work)
And basically you have to modify the driver so the laptop(optimus) thinks its an internal(dedicated) card and it will communicate through the igpu(integrated gfx) to internal laptop display (or something like that), the link explains this better. However i dont know about Ati cards, will they somehow work with optimus ? That ill leave for someone else to reasarch. Sadly no more time to resarch and i really wanted to post this.
This is what i am talk about early (keep it for future). There is a good tutorial how to force drivers to use internal display.
I have got also idea how to use internal display, but its' crazy. It's requied disassemblind of leptop LCD. You are able to find some tutorials on instructables. There is thread about salvageing laptop LCD and converting them in external monitor.
http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Convert-a-Laptop-LCD-into-an-External-Monit/
Since our leptops mostly powered by external source and with external display - it's no longer leptop. Best way on my opinion is moveing to complete custom build - open stand (or custom acryl stand). Yeah, i know it will be damn frankenstein - but it's already look's like disabled.
P.S. Tracking of part for my Y500 finally alive and it's left china and flying to me. I hope i can asssemble my leptop soon.

$20 for it, seriously? We can buy one at ¥20. Just use the same one on your 2nd graphic card is fine, it can be token apart from the 2nd graphic card.
I have got plans to sell 2nd VGA after i test Gerald adapter and confirm it's working fine for me. So, i would like to don't disassmble 2nd VGA. =)
16 hours ago, David 'SOAP' Washington said:Have you repired your laptop yet? I missed you so well.
Not yet and it will take LONG. I am ordered part i need on eBay and seller give me tracking number, but i can't get any data from tracking system.
Parcel sent from China by ePacket to Russia. Tracking type is LQxxxxxxxxxCN.
Also, i don't have any Radeon card yet. In fact i don't know what to choose RX 470 or RX 480? I am sure IF adapter will work - it will work as PCI-E v2.0 and not 3.0. So, maybe there is no real reason to pay more for performance of RX 480 which i will not really see? And another problem for me it's choose between 4096 Mb or 8192 Mb on board.
So, i am stuck now and waiting for news from tracking system and thinking about which card i should get.
Good thing is - i can take pictures of my disassembled Lenovo Y500. =)))) So youd don't need to disassemble it.
-
I finally got Adapter from Gerald at Friday on this week!
But week BEFORE (or so) i am cleaned CPU cooler and damaged flex cabel from power button board to motherboard. So, i am waiting now for replacement part...
Also, CPU cooler started to wobble a lot and give very noticable vibration to entire notebook - i think i will replace CPU cooler too.
P.S. I am inserted adapter in disassembled notebook and... it's a bit wobble too. No strong fix inside. Maybe someone integrated adapter in 2nd VGA shell? Or maybe custom shell with Ultrabay lock? That will be nice MOD!
Here is braket only:

You are right. The worst think - bios modder SLV7 seems to be retired on these forums. So we might be on our own...
I think we just need to look for another SLV7.

Not actually i am personally, i am founded it in the web. My small work was only copy all information about it for later use. I will share it later (when we got positive results with NVIDIA).
12 hours ago, Heterodyne said:I got an email from gerald on the weekend, the adapter probably arrives this week, so I can test myself.
I am also got e-mail, but not from him. I got an e-mail from eBay, but yeah... adapter is on the way to me too.
-
Well, i am ordered one from gerald on eBay. Now i am waiting when he comlete work with PCB and shipping.
5 years is a huge period... I don't think someone have a strong reason to do it. After 5 years each part of any LENOVO laptop will be too old for any upgrade. Especially for games.
Soldering and desoldering components in general hard work. Your really need skills to do it right. Especially when we talk about something with high voltage.
I think main thing what need to focus are:
1. Find way to disable white lists or at least find way to edit it. Need to find way to use NVIDIA cards. It's a big limit of adapter.
2. Find way to forward picture from eGPU to Internal Display (iDisplay) instead of External Display (eDisplay)?
I know the trick for NVIDIA cards (need to add few lines in driver), but i don't know such things for Radeon driver.

Your ZOTAC GeForce GTX 660 won't work with the adapter at all. It has to be an AMD card. With Nvidia cards, you won't be able to boot into Windows 10.
I know it's don't work now. Saying "i have got access to..." i mean IF there will be progress with compatibility of NVIDIA cards - i have got one for test and confirm it. Now it's dead end, but why don't be prepare? =)
5 hours ago, ManyStrongWords said:Also, make sure the modded bios you have are version 2.07 or earlier. Anything after 2.07 won't work. You can back flash if needed.
Modded BIOS for Lenovo Y500 by svl7 is v2.04. My official by Lenovo, which i am currently useing, also v2.04. There is no anything more new. So, i think i am good at this point.

Try to look for so called "Mail Forward Service" in Europe, USA and maybe in UK. Your may pay this company, they will sent money to gerald on ebay, he will ship adapter to them and they will re-ship it to your.
Chain is long, but it's better then nothing.

Hello everyone!
I am very happy, that someone with right head used Ultrabay for eGPU. Damn x8 instead of x1 it's a really BIG step forward. And no all that mPCI-E, NGFF, Thunderbold...
So, close to the bussiness. I have got:
Lenovo Y500 (so called Gen.1) with:
Intel Core i7-3630QM
8GB RAM
2048Mb NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M SLI
Windows 10 Pro x64
I have got Modded BIOS made by svl7, but don't flashed it yet. Keeping it just in case.
So, i would like to:
1. Buy Ultrabay Adapter;
2. Test it on my system.
I have got access to ZOTAC GeForce GTX 660 for testings and maybe i will buy Radeon for proper function.
Update: Yeah, if compare prices on GTX 1060 6G - Radeon RX 460 look's pretty afforable. In fact i may upgrade my system for about... $300.
So, main question is what eBay link is working? =)
Update: I see the link, i will sent money in a day or two. Keep one adapter for me!

Another error:
Now when i am trying to make backup of my BIOS:
(on simple double click):
(Run as administrator)
But as your may guess - it's in the same folder.
I am also added in *.bat file full address. Now it's look's like so:
SOLVED:
Right click on fptw64.exe and go to Properties => General Tab (press Unlock button)
Then go to Compatibility Tab and check box Run as Administrator
After that your are able to just double click on backup.bat
