  1. One more question. If I go with the DSDT substitution, and I compact the dGPU to the 36bit space (only dGPU, no eGPU connected) why I still see some resources in the lower space? Shouldn't be everything starting over 1.0000.0000 address? I'm ok with memory addresses allocated in the green rectangles, don't understand the red ones.
  2. Hi there. I'm trying to get a GTX 680 running using a thunderbolt connection to my Asus G750JW notebook, but so far can't get both cards working at the same time. eGPU = MSI GTX 680 dGPU = Asus GTX 765m iGPU = there is no iGPU, Asus disabled this entirely. So far, using compaction (3.87 & 4 GB) I was able to replace the dGPU with the eGPU, so eGPU was working fine while dGPU showed error code 12. After struggling to make this work, I tried with DSDT substitution (Windows 8.1), I've created my file, then went in Setup 1.3 and called the command: pt MEM writefromfile 1 0x5CB12228 dsdt.aml(0x5CB12228 is my DSDT start address) then tried again compaction on 36bit space, but no success, the computer restarts after trying to load Windows 8. I can confirm the Large Memory Block, if I don't compact, and go to Windows 8.1, I see the Large Memory Block entry there, but eGPU shows Code 12 as usual. Any ideas?

  4. Quick question. Shouldn't pin 10 on pci express riser card be connected to the pin 13 on the PSU shared by the orange and the brown wire or directly to the brown wire?   5. Tried the pci express riser card mod presented here and a couple of notes. Low power cards (without 6/8 pins connectors) won't work. The PSU will shut down immediately. Discovered that I also need to connect a ground to make it work. Second, my MSI 680 lightning will run its fans at full speed and is kinda annoying. Any solutions/ideas about this?   6. You need to buy an PCI Express extender. The PCI Express card that goes into the extender needs on some pins 12V and on some other pins 3.3V. While in theory all that voltage should be provided over the thunderbolt enclosure, in practice is better to do it yourself directly from an ATX PSU. The ATX PSU 24pins connector will give you all 3.3V lines and all 12V lines to power the PCI Express slot of the Video Card. There are some guys that are doing the 12V mod on their bitcoin cards. From there, some people like MystPhysX decided to do it also for the 3.3V. This is a visual explanation on how to do the 12V mod for the PCI-E extender. [Guide] Homebrew powered risers.     Asus or Clevo?

    CPU is soldered and the videocard is MXM socket but the card is custom size, not square. You can't fit a normal MXM card. You can find dissasembly pictures on the net if you make a search. Sent from my iPhone 5 using Tapatalk 2

  15. Wrapping the cable in aluminium foil could work? But from what I've read so far in this matter, the issues are not related to interferences, they seems solely to poor connections/connectors, like the connectors don't properly clamp with enough force/area of contact on the wires, things like that.
  16. I hope I'm not boring someone with those connectors, but I found another one here: ARC1-EMSX1-C15 I assume judging by their description that this extender could be capable of Gen2. What I'm trying to accomplish with such connectors is to get a mPCIe or a PCIe x1 socket in a favorable position, some notebooks have some mPCIe slots near the optical drive enclosure, and I'm thinking to drive the wires in that area and get the connector to the edge of the notebook. Does this makes sense?
  17. I have a couple of questions. I'm more and more into buying one of the Asus G750 series, despite of this model not featuring Optimus and having the Intel Graphics card "cut" from display, whatever that would mean. First question, I understand that the eGPU will only work if I display on some external monitor, I'm fine with that, but can I use Nvidia dGPU 770m for PhysX? Can PhysX be enabled on this card if it is connected to the notebook display? If I close the lid, does this count as no display connected? Second question (some bold scenario), if I enable the Intel HD graphics card via a BIOS mod or via Setup 1.x if it is possible, I assume that Optimus could become available, the only issue is that I can't display anything on the screen cause Intel HD could not be enabled. So, I'm asking about a driver or a software to copy the screen buffer from the iGPU to the dGPU. Still don't know how this would be working, for example don't know what resolution will be available to the iGPU if it is not connected to a display, whatever...

On this forum and somewhere else I start seeing ads for some similar DIY eGPU parts from this company: Arstech Installing and use of XPRS-HOST-EC Installing and use of XPRS-PX-X16 And some interesting adapter: It looks like they are using dual SATA cables to stream PCI Express signal. Also I would like to mention, on the bplus website, they started selling the M2MU2 adapter (M.2 (NGFF) to mini PCI-E Adapter). New notebooks like Lenovo Y510 use this new connector instead of mPCIe. The issue with buying a brand new computer those days is that a mobile card like GTX 770m is too good comparing with the eGPU implementations. <strike>If I compare the top egpu leaderboard from there http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/2109-diy-egpu-experiences-%5Bversion-2-0%5D.html#implementations with the benchmark results from here: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770M - NotebookCheck.net Tech one can easily spot that GTX770m is kinda equivalent in performance in all around benchmarks. </strike><strike></strike> So the eGPU counts for real if you already have the notebook or you are looking for a cheap one with a lousy video card. Is my thinking flawed in any way? Later edit: Yes, is flawed, I was looking only at the 3dmark 2006 leaderboard.
  21. Saw this mPCIe to Expresscard 34 adapter online today. The price is kinda affordable, if I could find a good mPCIe extender capable of Gen.2 I could make a DIY enclosure in the space for the optical bay unit to be able to connect via an expresscard. I'm thinking about a custom caddy, to host a 2.5 inches HDD and also the expresscard slot. http://www.cartft.com/catalog/il/1531
  22. @jacobsson: I will try to quickly explain my "curious" consumer habits trying not to get boring. I'll do my best. First, it all started when I bought my dual core laptop, later bought another one with a higher clock speed, then jumped to a i5 with hyperthreading which I enjoyed extremely and now I just want to try a quad core with hyperthreading. Also, over time I just realized I want to get more and more RAM memory, feel like 8GB like I currently work with are not enough so jumping to 16 and maybe later upgrading at 32 would be just perfect. So far few notebooks met my criteria: Quad core i7, 16GB RAM, iluminated keyboard, good keyboard with wide keys not crammed in a tiny space. Also on 15 inches my eyes decided I need exactly 1600x900 while on 17 inch a full HD would be just fine. On the above mentioned specs, adding eGPU compatibility is a complicated issue. So far, Asus, strangely, have 2 notebooks that meets my requirements. G750 - No optimus, no upgradable CPU, 4 memory banks, non upgradable custom form factor MXM GTX 770m, 1 mPCIe half slot occupied by wifi, thunderbolt, good cooling N750 - Optimus, no upgradable CPU, 2 memory banks, soldered GTX 750m, 2 mPCIe half slot, probably having problems with cooling While here, in the local market N750 would be $300 cheaper than G750, I feel that the costs of adding external GPU would not make it worth right now. Because GTX770m from the Asus G series is a decent card. I just feel is not the "skyrocket" time for an eGPU. Mobile graphics card became faster and faster, while the desktop cards are more and more bottlenecked by the slow 1x pci express interface. Thunderbolt is not cheap and next gen thunderbolt coming in 2014 could be actually coming in 2015, and the early adoption prices would be higher anyway. So I'm kinda stuck right now, don't know what to do, and I just know I need a powerful laptop. Either choice, I could try to implement an eGPU just for fun (I'm a curious creature by nature) and see how it goes. Thoughts, comments?
  23. I think I've already asked this but still don't get a couple of things... Admitting that I buy an Asus G750, and it won't have the iGPU active/enabled only the Nvidia dGPU, if I add an eGPU how do I know which video card will be the active one, I mean how can I select the output to go to the external one instead of the dGPU?   24. I don't cover G46 model, I speak solely for G55 and G75 models. This forum post is explaining most of the questions: G55 Thunderbolt clarification So far I was not able to see on the market a single model with Thunderbolt of those series. Yes, I saw thunderbolt mentioned a lot of times in descriptions, but it was falsely advertised as being equipped with thunderbolt. In reality it was only a display port. Buyers should pay attentions to those kind of specs, because lot of times those are not accurate. As for this year, so far I can see that Asus launched the G750 (17 inch) and they are claiming thunderbolt on each model. I tend to believe them. There are 3 submodels JW (Nvidia 765M - thunderbolt, one single mPCIe occupied by Wifi), JX(Nvidia 770M - one single mPCIe occupied by Wifi), JH(Nvidia 780M - not launched yet - one single mPCIe occupied by Wifi plus two more free), but none of them have Optimus enabled. Also, in some countries I can see that Asus replaced the old N56/N76 line with the new N550/N750 line - all body aluminium which features a Nvidia 750M, Optimus is enabled and there is a free mPCIe port at least on the N750JV model.
