@jacobsson That's disappointing to hear. I'll be able to test and compare on my setup soon though. The TB mobo should be here in a week

I've now got my self a 500W (3 x 12V@18A) ATX PSU for testing, everything runs smoothly now, tested Metro:LL for ~45min, no problem there.

Sooooo, what's up with the DA-2?

I suspect there is some kind of voltage drop of the DA-2 during turbo-boost on the GTX970, would some capacitors be able to smooth things out in the 12V lines maybe?

I'm still determined that the DA-2 will be my main power source for the Akitio so now it's just a matter of troubleshooting.

I'm thankful for any suggestions how to fix the voltage drop!

  2. hm... i follow the instruction on page 1 for buying the parts.

    1. EXP GDC on yoybuy store (this is include the Dell DA-2 right? and i have to change the weight manually on checkout?

    2. ATX Power cable for connecting the GPU (either gtx 760/980) to the Adapter of EXP GDC

    3. case (optional)

is there any parts i should buy more?

    kind regards,

    Hi Buddy!

So you're looking to get the EXP GDC V7 from here I assume?

    The Yoybuy package includes

    • EXP GDC V7 (also called ARES V7)
    • DA-2 PSU
    • 6-pin power split cable
    • Expresscardcable / mPCIe data cable (depending on choice)

And that's all you need if you're planning on using the DA-2 as PSU.

The DA-2 should be sufficient for the GTX980, but I'd check the TDP carefully on benchmarking reviews first so that your brand of choice is staying within the 220W limit.

  3. Can't test right now, because the card is currently in the mail to be replaced with another card (same model/brand).

Your problems with the OC are strange, because that is not a big OC itself. The power target shouldn't affect this situation, it should just limit the amount of times the boost can be achived (lower the boost if limited by the power target). Most of the times I will instantly increase the power target to get a stable boost.

When my exchanged card returns I will do futher testing.

    Thanks for the input.

My claims regarding underclocking the core is false, I get VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE in just a few minutes of running Metro: Last light. There is only one option left: RMA. :(

Yeah, I figure the power limit is very tight. I'll test increasing the limit and restore the factory (incorrect) OC and see if it works better, makes sense?

The log shows that the incorrect boost is achieved w/o problems several times during the test and then crashes the x th time.

    Thanks for your help!

  5. Updated my power consumtion post! http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/7205-us%24225-akitio-thunder2-pcie-box-43.html#post107504

I have no clue about the cave crash… sound was still playing, which means no OS freez, but the 3dMark picture was frozen. Power consumtion dropped -> no GPU use anymore.

Seems like a bug to me. 3dMark or Nvidia... no idea. All the other benchmarks worked flawless.

Hi Buddy, had any more freeze / Crashes / Black screen problems with your GTX970?

I certainly had, especially in Sky Diver Demo and Metro:last light!

I spent some days analyzing my problem and found that the problem is the video card, not the driver or other hardware.

Using GPU-Z and logging the GPU activity (core / mem / temp / fan in the sensor tab) I found that my card has got a incorrect factory clock.

By examining the log-file from GPU-Z I found that my card runs at:

1125MHz / 1265MHz (standard / boost), after reaching boost for a couple of seconds = hard crash!

Correct standard clocks for my card should be:

1076MHz / 1216MHz (standard / boost), This is an OC of 49MHz, I know I doesn't sound like much but consider what happens with OC w/o raising the power limit and other parameters.

Anyway, I down clocked the core to stock values (-49MHz) with MSI Afterburner and logged Sky Diver (3 times back-to-back) = no crash / BSOD / Black screen.

The log file now shows a correct MAX boost of 1216MHz.

Ran all 3DMARK-test, no problems so far!

I'll run Metro: Last light for an hour tonight and report back, if this pass then I consider the problem fixed.

I've also e-mailed ZOTAC and ask them for an immediate release of a correct clocked VBIOS.

  6. I would definitely recommend to use a powered riser! As my power consumtion tests have shown, the AKiTiO PSU might be used beyond it specs.

The Optimus "problem" might refer to my too much testing and playing with settings. Will reinstal Windows 8.1 when I get my GTX 970 back (had to send it back because of coil noise problems under load). I am pretty sure it will work again, as many people (including me) had it working.

Did it sound something like this?

    Or something like this?

All my cards has made this sound under load.

    Is this normal?

  7. Hi everyone,

I am Johnny. I have read through some of the pages in this thread, however I couldn't find anyone has the same problem as mine. I have a:

    13 Macbook pro R 2014,

    with Intel Iris,

    2.6 Ghz Intel core i5,

    8gb ddr3

    running windows 7 64

    EXP GDC v7

    eGPU evga gtx770

    sonnet expresscard pro thunderbolt adapter

My problem is after I have install everything, my macbook shows that gtx 770 " code 12, does not have enough resources". I don't know what can I do to fix this problem.

Thank you for reading my post

    Johnny

P.S. I am not an computer expert.

Hi Johnny, welcome to the EXP GDC thread!

Your is issue seems to be more of a PCI space / compation problem, the good thing here is that it seems like your EXP GDC is working.

Now since I don't have any first hand experience of Macbook eGPU my self I would recommend you to ask the question in the main thread:

    http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/2109-diy-egpu-experiences-%5Bversion-2-0%5D.html

I assume you've already looked in the troubleshooting guide here?

The first thing to test is to make a DSDT override, it also well described in the link above.

Worst case scenario might be that you need the Setup 1.x from @Tech Inferno Fan to overcome this error.

I hope this can help you get started!

  8. Thanks so much man, everything is all good now :) also for people getting the metal enclosure for the exp gdc v7, its good but you need to bend it into shape :P and also they only gave me 5 screws... But its alright, i found some more from a broken pc. The enclosure isnt that fashionable, looking to paint it soon. Also its insanely heavy! Other than that its pretty average. Also you can add a fan to increase airflow, which is nice. One more thing, the exp gdc v7 gives you an extention cable for extending the power to your graphics card, but you should need it. Let me know if you want pics, i can upload them if you like.

Wait whaat, you have the metal enclosure now?

A lot of pics pleaseeeeee :P

  9. Okay, so I posted a while back about my plan to get a eGPU and with the release of the 970 I went for it. My system:

    HP ZBook 15 - i7-4700 MQ, Quadro K2100M, TB1

    GigaByte GTX 970

    Akitio Thunder2

    Corsair RM550

    Powered 16x -> 16X riser

A Molex powered plug for the Akitio (since an electrical engineer on here suggested that)

So at this point Windows recognises a GTX 970 in Device Manager, GPUz can read information from it (like the manufacturer and BIOS), however, NVidia Control Panel, setting up an extra monitor and the GeForce software won't recognise it. I have an external monitor connected to the GPU. I've tried disabling the Intel HD4600, I've tried installing the drivers a couple of times, disabling the K2100M in the Device Manager (although I have not found an option to disable it entirely so it won't show up).

Are there any suggestions, since I'm stuck at this point?

In device manager, does it report that your GTX 970 works properly?

  10. AKiTiO USA are monitoring what we're doing: https://www.facebook.com/akitiousa/posts/910682828961731

Anybody know where to get the Thunder2 for less than $270? That's the latest price by B&H and Amazon.

We've see price go from US$199 (intro), US$225 to the now not so attractive US$270.

Since AKiTiO USA are monitoring this, why not give DIY eGPU users the original US$199 deal? If not, then there are other products near your pricepoint:

    http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/7633-us%24314-sonnet-echo-express-sel-16gbps-tb2.html#post104840

I completely agree , that price point takes us back where we once started, very disappointing :(

The eGPU 2.0 members should even get a lower price (at least the old $199) since we are contributing to the development of the product.
