I had a similar issue after installing Ubuntu on a flash drive for my MacBook Pro. I was able to get rid of grub by reinstalling OS X El Capitan.

I just installed an update to El Capitan, but do you know of the thread in which you install the seed on your mac. I want to know if I have any problems with my kernael. I am still running windows 8, is there any problems with windows 8 all of the sudden?

  2. For programming the kernel, I keep getting an error message when booting up my computer. Which thread should I go to ask about this.

    Error reads as follows:

                                                                                 GNU GRUB version 2.02~beta2

Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions

    grub>

***So I am assuming that this is just an error in code. But I would like to know who to ask or which thread to follow for the answer thank you.

  3. Dschijn,

So I got all my supplies together today and I noticed that the splitter and the power cable that comes off the fans are two different sizes, the fan I bought is the NF-A9x14 I linked previously, is there a fix to this problem like an adapter, or did I get the wrong fans. Side note: the splitter you linked fits perfectly on the graphics card so now I just need the fans to plug it into. Thank you.

I doubt that a 140mm fan will fit...

I used 92mm fans that are very slim, just 14mm thick, the Noctua A-Series NF-A9x14 you linked.

For the connection to the GPU I used this one, to connect two fans at once: http://www.moddiy.com/products/4%252dPin-VGA-PWM-Mini-Connector-to-Dual-PH-Mini-4%252dPin-Fan-Cable-Splitter.html

And of course a pair of 92mm black fan grills.

I appreciate the feedback, I will send pictures when I am all done, thank you.

  5. Dschjin,

I have finished my eGPU and have been playing games flawlessly on them. I want to follow the same exact build you have minus a few electrical things but I am just wondering on the fans for the side of the case. I am just wondering which of these fans will work, if I order two of them,

and if they do work, if this wire would work as well to connect them to the graphics card.

I want to make cuts on the case, but I want to make sure I have all the parts I need. Please let me know if you have any advice. Thank you.

  6. That depends on the guide you are referring to… In my first 2 guides yes, I used a riser to have the freedom of using desktop PC PSUs and long beefy cards.

In my 3rd build I broke it all down to fit into the AKiTiO: http://forum.techinferno.com/implementation-guides-apple/9821-2014-15-mbp-iris-gtx970%4016gbps-tb2-akitio-thunder2-win8-1-osx10-10-%5Bdschijn-2%5D.html#post131966

You will have to make holes on the side of the case to get fresh air into the system!

What did you use to cut the metal? I do not think I will need to replace my GPU fans, but I will see when I hook it all up. I am also having some trouble finding some 90-degree 6 pin PCIe cables in the US.

  7. You will also have to remove the front fan from the case and improve ventilation! Also keep in mind to make the barrel plug and combine it with the DA-2 as well.

So the front fan case from the Akitio? And will that be enough ventiliation. Yes, I plan on making that barrell plug. So should I have to remove anything from the actual Akitio case, because on your guide it says you are using a riser and different things that I know I am not using(since you used an actual desktop case to house all your equipment.)

  8. AFAIK only Optimus doesn't run in W10…

So that would mean I would need an external?

I was reading through your guide that you just linked(amazing build BTW) and I was just wondering I know I will need some 90-degree 6 pin PCIe cables, but as long as I remove the fan case from the Zotac GTX 970 and I have the DA-2(with a 2014 macbook pro) everything should fit into the Akitio thunder right?

  9. @hato1:

You can see some benchmarks of my eGPU compared to my desktop system here: http://forum.techinferno.com/implementation-guides-apple/8571-2014-15-macbook-pro-iris-gtx970%4016gbps-tb2-akitio-thunder2-win8-1-%5Bdschijn%5D.html

You will need the AKiTiO Thunder2, a GPU, a power supply and some cables. Please read my basic guide: http://forum.techinferno.com/apple-egpu-discussion/10061-basic-egpu-hardware-guide-macs.html

With you MacBook you will only be able to use the eGPU power on an external monitor! That will work in OSX (Yosemite and El Capitan are working great), Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

With an external monitor an eGPUs efficiency is between 75-95% which depends on the game and the bandwidth it needs. Some games run worse than on a desktop, some as good as on the desktop PC.

Most cost efficient is any eGPU with a Dell DA-2, AKiTiO Thunder2 and GPU GTX 950, 960 or 970. Bigger cards will need bigger PSUs and might need PC cases to store them in.

    @THOMASRAJA:

Please read the basic guide I linked to hato1. Which MSI card do you want to use? The red one with two fans might be too big!

You basically need a AKiTiO Thunder2, power supply (120W should be fine with 12V or a Dell DA-2) and the GPU. You will also need to make a barrel plug if you use a power supply that doesn't have the plug to connect to the Thunder2.

I thought windows 10 was still broken?

  10. I'm looking to hook up my Macbook Pro (2015) with a Nvidia GTX 970 using the AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box. But I have never done anything techy with hardware beyond cleaning my fan. I tried reading through threads and the pre-purchase FAQ but some information seemed outdated, not relevant or I just didn't understand. I'm wanting to use the external GPU for gaming via bootcamp (win10).

What do I need to purchase other than the Thunderbox, Graphics Card & Thunderbolt cable? (Source of power?)

Is this easy enough to set up? (And will I run into problems with my dGPU [GT 750m] or running windows 10 [Need to use an external monitor?])

How efficient will it be compared to the same build on a Desktop? (Hoping for at-minimum better than a Nvidia GTX 760)

Are there any alterations you'd make to my plan to make it easier/more cost effective/efficient?

Would you recommend me getting a crappy graphics card to test before trying out the GTX 970?

    Thank-you for any help!

Edit: I have not yet bought the new GTX 980.

Read through the last few pages. I just asked for all of that info. I am bulding my eGPU this wednesday. I will post results and probably make a youtube video.

  11. You will have to plug the y-cable into the DA-2. The remote pin needs to get contact with a ground signal (in any way) to make the DA-2 "start".

With that you will have 2 new 6-Pins from the y-cable. One will be used to make the barrel plug (male side) and another will be used with the extension to reach the 6-Pin port on the GPU.

Is there a guide to making a 6-pin PCIe to barrel adapter?Because all I can find is molex to barrel. Also when I am plugging in my 6-pin PCIe into the 8-pin Dell DA-2 side all I need to do it plug it in such a way that those 6-pins touch both the GND and the Remote pins right? So if I am thinking about this correctly, the 6-pin will be plugged into all pins besides the furthest right GND pin and the furthest right 12V pin?

    **********EDIT************

After reading some more I found previous information that I will be cutting down the unused 6-pin PCIe from the split into two sets of yellow(+) and black wires(-) for the barrel plug adapter. My own question now is, what is the paperclip trick because it seems that I will need to use that to power my DA-2? Thanks in advance

  12. Awesome! So i am understanding the basic concepts of the design. Okay, I will order a 6 pin extension, which side will the go on, the GPU side or the barrel plug side?

Now concerning the grounding of the pins in that 8-pin to 6-pin fixture, I was looking at the diagrams and from what I read when I plug the 6-pin y cable into the fixture there are some wires I need to cut. I was just wondeing if you could help elaborate on exactly what I need to do to get the y-cable/extension to go to the barrel plug?

    Thank you

  13. After reading through that I think I have the basic layout of what I will need to buy. Would you be able to confirm that everything is compatible before I buy it please?

When I put the 6 pin PCIe into the 8 Pin PCIe from the PSU, will the other end of the 6 pin work directly for my 6 pin PCIe GPU?

    *********EDIT***********

Considering Fallout 4 comes out in less than a week, i went ahead and read alot online. Everything above is what I bought except for the wires. I bought this wire instead with a 2.5x5.5 mm barrel:

Please let me know if I will need anything else. Thank you

  14. Hello,

I am currently looking to build a eGPU for Fallout 4 coming out next week. From what I have been reading there is a multitude of ways to do this. Here are some specs:

    • Macbook Pro 15-inch(Mid-2014)
    • Iris Pro graphics only
    • Windows 10 bootcamp (I know I will probably have to buy Windows 8.1)

My question is what should I buy, I have put some links below as to what my research has lead me to buy but I don't want to make a wrong purchase. Please let me know what I should, any and all advice is welcome. The Wasteland needs me.

    Casing:

Amazon.com: Akitio Thunder2 PCIe Box: Computers & Accessories

    GPU: 3 Choices so far

Amazon.com: EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4GB SC GAMING, Only 6.8 inches, Perfect for mITX Build Graphics Card 04G-P4-1962-KR: Computers & Accessories

    or

Amazon.com: ZOTAC GeForce GTX 970 GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Graphics Card (ZT-90101-10P): Computers & Accessories

*without the cover on the fans so it can fit in the casing

    or

    PSU

New Genuine Dell 220W Da 2 AC Power Adapter Optiplex USFF SX280 GX620 M8811 | eBay

Now as for the special wires needed to connect everything, I am not exactly sure so I will attach two that I have found that I believe will work.

Pair of PCI E 6 Pin 90 Degree Super Low Low Profile 7" Extension Made in USA | eBay

6 Pin to 6 2 Pin PCI E PCI Express PCIe Splitter Power Cable | eBay

Now as for my problem with Windows 10, I was wondering if anyone have any advice as to acquiring Windows 8.1. Since I bought Windows 10 without owning Windows 8.1 I need to find a way to downgrade, or just wipe that partition and freshly install Windows 8.1

Thanks again in advance for any advice.
