  1. With the same model MacBook as we re discussing? What graphics card are you using

its weird seeing some of you guys have booting issues. what PSU are u guys running, how are you powering ur eGPU?

for me i don't have to go through ANY boot up processes. I just keep akitio plugged in, power supply turned on, and no matter how many times i restart my computer or even crashes, it boots up fine.

My question was for you. "Quote" apparently failed

  2. Hi@shopkeeper, I decided to build a separate PC since the eGPU setup didn't worked. Hence I meant that I ordered all other parts to build a PC. Hope the eGPU setup works for you, but if you feel that the whole setup is not a stable eGPU setup and if you are willing to then I would suggest to just build a separate PC setup.

This is what I'm doing. The setup works great with a 760, but didn't want to boot with a 1070, so Im building a desktop to put the 1070 in.

  3. Again id like to add: I updated Windows to the latest update "Anniversary update" and it ruined everything. If you have this model MacBook I'd recommend waiting for updated boot camp drivers and Nvidia's drivers. My USB ports stopped functioning, trackpad barely worked and some apps wouldn't load correctly. I'm currently reinstalling Windows 10

  4. I would like to add.. I have gotten it to boot yet a third time... I plug in the 1070 (akitio tb2) just as the boot selection screen appears... I'd like to point out that when you plug in the card, the fans twitch, then about 4 seconds later they spin up.. So I timed it this way

    1. Have eGPU turned on

    2. Plug it in the moment you see the boot menu appearing (a second or two after you notice the display power on

    3. Count to 3 (1 second before the fans spin up on the card) and plug in the card - at this exact moment you'll need to hit enter on the Windows entry to boot.

This has worked for me 3 times now.

Side note- I went to services and disabled Nvidia's streaming services, there are two entries in there I believe one was Called "NvStrSrvc" the other one is the entry right below it. Sorry I'm not home to check them ATM, just read what they are when you do this (if you do this) - not sure if it helped but when checking boot logs before, this service is where booting froze and went to endless spinning dots

  5. 2 hrs of rebooting with and without egpu and disabling NVStrSrvc and some boot logging and I finally got it to boot again... Needless to say I'm leaving the laptop on all weekend

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Edit* it finally booted after plugging in the egpu right as the boot selection menu appeared, counted to 3 in my head and selected Windows

There has to be a way to make this more reliable for this model MBPr .. Where is a computer God when you need one? Somebody please provide us with some hope

  6. I got the Evga 1070ftw to work on win 10 with my 2015 MBPr 13", after a couple unsuccessful boots after installing drivers it decided to work. Played bf4 at retina resolution on ultra with 8xaa at a decent 70-130 fps. Done for the night. Hopefully it will boot again tomorrow.

I am noticing a lower success rate in my booting method... I will look into this tomorrow and see if i can increase this

Lol. I haven't gotten it to boot a second time... Keep getting endless spinning dots at boot.

After enough fiddling I'm sure it will boot again but being this much trouble- I think I'll just build a desktop computer to put the card in once Kaby lake CPUs get released

  7. I hooked up a 1070 to my 2015 MBPr (iris6100) earlier today, it recognized it, installed drivers, then went into endless boot (win8.1) reinstalling with win10 now to see what I can do.

9 & 10 series cards don't seem to work well with this model MacBook Pro, 6 & 7 series cards worked flawlessly, but only on Windows 8.1, they use the legacy driver built in to all latest releases drivers and I believe that has something to do with it. Newer cards don't use legacy, and don't seem to work well as egpu

  8. Holy shit. I have a 960 and you're now telling me that it will fail to boot on Windows 10? Can I just install Windows 7/8 instead? Fucking devastated. Have had this card for over a month now so I can't return it. Can anyone help me out here?

I think you'll be okay if you are going to use an external monitor, I'm using internal.

Try it...see what results you get, a few have managed to get it booting but usually takes a lot of trial and error, and even after figuring it out it's rarely successful. The 6 & 7 series cards that I'm using use the legacy driver built in to the nvidia drivers which I think has something to do with why they work consistently with eGPU & Optimus. The newer cards seem to be the problem unless you have a Thunderbolt 3 port

  9. Hi, great thanks on the guide!

I now have a greater chance booting up OSX with EGPU, however, as for windows 10, it stuck at the loading screen with dots circling around.

What I want to share is that I saw another guy who had the same problem of difficulty on booting of 2015 model, and he contended that the problem occurs on GTX960 and GTX 970, whereas GTX650Ti can be perfectly used without these problems. I think this is something interesting, as I have only GTX970 available around me, I am wondering if anyone can test elder gpus and confirm that?

This is exactly why I'm returning my 970. So many failed boot attempts it drove me nuts, whereas my GTX660 and my GTX 760 worked every time. Actually out of probably 100 bootups, the 760 only caused it to hang once, I'm going to miss the performance of the 970 but it's just not worth the headache. I don't know why the old cards work better... Maybe something to do with them being supported only by the Legacy portion of the driver (I think) I don't really know. I'm literally at frys right now returning this GTX970 :(

  10. So. After two weeks playing with an EVGA GTX970 SSC, I've decided to give up and take it back, and will continue to use my old EVGA GTX 760. Why?...

The 760 works 99.9% of the time (Windows 8.1) with no fiddling around, no special boot process, no hot plug+ restart. I just plug in the cable, turn on the computer and play.

The 970, when it works- is awesome, but I was only able to get it to boot 4 times, by wasting a lot of time, trying to boot, rebooting, deleting drivers, installing drivers and it was just a headache. I spent two weeks trying to figure out how to get a stable, reliable boot process but it's just not happening. Windows 8.1 failed as much as Win10 when trying to boot, whereas the 760 boots into 8.1 every time..

This was done on a 2015 rMBP 13" with iris 6100 iGPU. It's somewhat disappointing, but I guess I'll get a 1070 when they're available, and if booting then is still unreliable I'll just build a desktop

  11. Now that I'm paying attention rather than jumping straight to it I see that my GTX 760 was not listed in supported devices. I have a 970 now, I'm going to try again with that later this week on the same 2015 rMBP 13"

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  12. Edit: title- I meant 970...So I finally hooked up the 970ssc and was able to boot and install drivers. But now no combination of boot order with card seems to get past the spinning Windows loader (win8.1).

When I was using the GTX760 everything worked, booted every time. I'm hoping I'm just missing something here maybe you guys can help?

This is with the Early 2015 13" with iris6100 iGPU,

The 970 card is the 3975-KR model (purchased from frys).

And I'm not using an external display, just internal

  13. Correct. I'm going to cover the hole underneath and on the rear so you can't see that and make a mount to sit in there and hold the cable in place.

I couldn't find a riser with the correct direction- every sellers idea of what was "mounts left" or "right" was different from another - so that was just kinda a decision I made on the fly. Also there didn't seem to be any sellers in the states. Everything was overseas and wouldn't get here until June lol

  14. I've been meaning to do this for months. Since my mbp broke and is in for repairs I finally had the will to do it- thanks to all on these forums for all the info I received.

Running a EVGA GTX970 SSC inside a coolermaster elite130 case with akitio thunder2 board, powered riser cable, and 750w power supply. Nice and clean now, no more cables hanging out all over the place.

    db36f5b8dd7628cf61d0202718e4cf2b.jpg

Mounting akitio case frame with double sided sticky tape just so I have something to screw the board onto- yes I took a grinder to it and cut out all but the base and rear (where the ports go).

    1e04b83eaa2b69cddba6d608d55ee4df.jpg

Everything mounted- quick power up test.

Back of case where I left the ports.

    ac0e26e1072f4d516ccecefc681db94e.jpg

This one just because I like the way it looks.

    0029a4e8aa31df61d700cb520d6b2ee3.jpg

Finished. Just need a longer thunderbolt cable than the one akitio provided. I'll pick that up when I pick up my computer :)

  15. That statement is 1,5 years old. [emoji6]

    Now we know it works!

Lol. I thank you for your help. It's much appreciated. I have a few days to finish this before I get my mbp back from Apple (repair), so I'm just kinda trying to keep my mind off not having my computer. I've had this elite130 sitting in the garage for 8 months now for exactly this purpose, just never got around to it

  16. I will get the molex to barrel adapter. I just wasn't sure about doing that since some people were concerned about the amount of watts coming into the barrel on the board that way

    What? ^^

Try both riser... one of them should work.

And like I said before: You will need a riser with a 90° angle!

Here you can see the parts that I used: https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/6198-2013-13-macbook-pro-gtx97016gbps-tb2-akitio-thunder2-win81osx1010-dschijn/

I read through your posts here... What I meant was exactly this here :

No! In this forum we came to the conclusion that the AKiTiOs limit is 25W. So by using 80W, it is running beyond the specifications -> not good!

I thought, that a 6+8-Pin power connector on the GPU might provide enough power so that the GPU doesn't need more than the 25W, but I was wrong.

Bottomline is that I would advice everybody who wants to work with a AKiTiO to get a molex powered PCIe riser card to overcome the 25W. Additional benefit is, that the AKiTiO doesn't need it's own PSU and can be directly powered by the riser.

So I can plug in the card with the 8+6 connectors, attached with a powered riser (90° connector as you mentioned) and in turn - I should not need to attach anything to the barrel plug on the akitio board. That's what I was trying to confirm with my last question lol

  17. 1. No, never! All power should come from one single source. USing the 60W PSU works, but will cause instability and can damage your hardware.

    2. That depends on the riser. Most people do not have any problems, even with cheap riser.

I strongly recommend to power the AKiTiO directly from the big PSU with an 2xMolex -> barrel adapter or an 8-pin EPS ATX -> barrel adapter.

Please keep in mind that you will need an angled riser if you use the Elite 130!

    Thank you!

I will get the molex to barrel adapter. I just wasn't sure about doing that since some people were concerned about the amount of watts coming into the barrel on the board that way. I have a powered x16 riser as well as a non-powered x16 riser, so I guess I'll attach the card with the non-powered riser and leave the board in tact on the other side of the case where the ports will be accessible.

    Or....

Should I use the powered riser and not plug anything into the barrel?
