Thought I'd give an update on my findings...  My original testing was with non-touchbar base MBP13, a razer core, and gt670 and 980ti.  My interest is only with gaming in bootcamp at this point, so all that follows is in windows.

I had success with the gtx670 by installing all the standard stuff (win updates, synapse, razer gpu switcher) before connecting the core.  Then shutdown, connect core (which had external monitor), install nvidia drivers.  I could only get acceleration by launching on external monitor and dragging to internal display.  I could never get this to work without the extgernal display being connected.  Doing the same install process with my 980ti resulted in the error 12, which it seems may have had a fix based on recent posts.

Since then, I ended up returning that base MBP13 and getting a maxed MBP13 with touchbar.  I followed the same approach as described above and and had no error 12 but I also am now able to use the internal display only.  I don't know why it's behaving differently but this is working consistently through internal display, which is what I needed.  I do have an "Unknown USB Device (Device descriptor request failed) item in device manager with "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" but I don't know what this is.  USB ports on the core work fine but haven't tested ethernet.

Only downside is that I can't get audio through my internal speakers or headphones when razer core is connected.  I have the internal or headphones set as default and the windows sound config is illuminating the sound meter next to the internal speakers but nothing is coming through at all.  It also doesn't even detect that headphones have been plugged in.  THe only way I can get audio back through internal speakers is to shutdown and disconnect core before restarting, which isn't much of a fix...

Any thoughts on the audio issue?

Exact steps for my latest install procedure attached in case helpful to others.  I initially installed without nvidia HD audio drivers because didn't need audio through external display but I later did a clean install and added them due to the audio issues I had, which didn't help.

Try disable and then enable sound card: "Cirrus Logic CS8409 (AB 54)" under "Sound, video and game controllers".

    1. Compare with https://www.amazon.com/USB-IF-Certified-Cable-Matters-Thunderbolt/dp/B01AS8U7GU/ref=sr_1_2?srs=13705622011&ie=UTF8&qid=1478197320&sr=8-2&keywords=thunderbolt%2B3&th=1.

This is the passive version. It has definitely smaller connectors than the active one

    2. 1m passive costs $21, the one that I say is active costs $55 for 1m.

    3. Product description: "MORE REACH with the longest available 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 cables on the market"

To sum up: we have an active thunderbolt 3 cable although it doesn't say explicitly so.

BTW: Active cables go up to 2m. Beyond that we have to go with optical cables.

  3. Hi,

I have 2015 15" MBP Intel Iris with GTX970-AKiTiO T2 eGPU. Everything was working fine with Windows 8.1 64 bit in Optimus mode (Used the guide published here in the forum) with nVidia driver 353.30 64 bit.

Installed latest Windows 10 RTM 10240 with updated nVidia driver for Windows 10 353.30 64 bit. Having lots of problems enabling the eGPU in Optimus mode. Windows usually get stuck (BSOD) on startup. When hot plugging the eGPU, its being discovered by the system. Looking fine in device manager and nVidia control panel. However, when running a game, Intel Iris is used instead for rendering the game, giving an expected low FPS. I tried to play with nVidia control panel forcing gtx970. Reinstalled the System and drivers for couple of times but it didn't help. Unfortunately I can't roll back to Windows 8.1 because I already tried to reinstall Windows 10.

    Any suggestions?

  4. Ok, sorry :-)

Regarding the internal display configuration, is it correct that there will be more performance loss in higher resolution/fps count (due to more information that has to go back to the computer through TB)?

Is there any way of lowering the performance penalty (by software tweaking or hardware modding)?

    Thanks!

  5. So, when Physx enabled, there should be about 30% performance difference in favor of 750m in AC:BF even when using internal screen? Can you confirm?

Interesting that 750m is not listed as Physx supported GPU: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/physx/supported-gpus

What will be the average case scenario?

Is there a way of improving internal screen performance?

BTW, your eGPU implemetation's really inspiring and kudos for the guide.

  6. Expect a loss of performance if using the internal LCD for display since part of the TB bandwidth is sending display traffic. There is no such penalty if using a LCD attached to the eGPU.

IF getting the Iris Pro only model, performance will be the same with the exception that the dGPU model could utilize the dGPU for Physx effects, improving image quality. Though pls evaluate that benefit over the higher complexity in getting Optimus (enabling the iGPU in Windows) going on the dGPU model as documented at http://forum.techinferno.com/implementation-guides-apple/8717-%5Bguide%5D-enabling-intel-iris-pro-hd5200-win8-1-15-macbook-pro-gt750m.html

Thanks! The greater implementing complexity has taken into consideration.

Is it correct that there will be more performance loss in higher resolution/fps count?

Is there a way of lowering the performance penalty (by tweaking or hardware/moding wise)?

I thought that Physx, when enabled, can only lower cpu utilization (where most, if not all, games are gpu-bound, under i7 quad core with, lets say, gtx 970 as eGPU configuration) and does not effect visual quality, am I wrong? Source:

    Thanks.

  7. Greetings!

I've been an avid reader of this forum for a while.

I have a mid 2014 15" rMBP 750m machine and I'm interested in maximum BootCamp eGPU performance while using only the internal Retina display (I don't want to use an external monitor).

Is enabling Optimus is mandatory (hence losing 10%-20% of performance)?

In case I switch to a similar, just Iris Pro non-dGPU machine should I expect basically for the same performance (same CPU)?

    Thanks...
