  1. I have the exp GDC beast v8 and I am planning to use my eVGA 750 ti FTW edition on it connected to my lenovo T430 via expresscard

I am thinking if a dell 220W PSU/adapter will be enough for this setup.

This is the power adapter I plan to buy:

  2. Hi,

    Is there a fix/workaround to make gen2 stable? I don't want to spend $88 on the pe4c v3.

p.s. I have EXP GDC V8 + gtx 750 ti evga FTW edition

About 15-20%, depending on the workload.

You can look at the many benchmarks that other users have put up. Some of them compare scores/framerates both with and without external monitor.

x1 2.0 is the highest you can get on EXP GDC.

GTX 970 gives very strange results however: http://www.owen-lu.com/egpu/

how to use external monitor? I tried connect my GTX 750 ti directly to the monitor via DVI but the output is still on the laptop

  3. ok thx man... still thinking if you should take the risk or not...

Another reason, apart from the price, I chose the EXP GDC V8 is that you can connect/disconnect it (it is not soldered) as my miniPCIe is found under my keyboard.. so it is not convenient having the adpater always connected to it.

Have you tried a miniPCiE extender btw and know if it works?

I don't know what's happening to others. But I had performance issues on gen2 with my first PE4C 3.0, so I made an RMA and replaced it with a working one. Probably some manufacturing issue with the cable or soldering...

ah ok ... did you have to return the item? Shipping is going to cost a lot in my country. thx for helping btw

The PE4C 3.0/4.1 are the best that I know about. The PE4L 2.1 must be the same but has a smaller conector and pcb. If any of those shows Gen2 instability then you should RMA and replace them.

but why are so many users in this thread reporting crashes with PE4C 3.0 ?? Really want to order the PE4C 3.0 to replace my EXP GDC V8 (which crashes now and then with gen2) but PE4C 3.0 is 2 to 3 times more expensive thant the EXP GDC v8 and I don't want to spend so much money for something which will not be stable on gen2..

So are users reporting crashes with PE4C v3 just stupid users who don't know how to connect the GPU or are there really issues with PE4C v3 on gen2??

  6. I currently have the EXP GDC v8 and it works well on gen1 speed but is very unstable on gen2 speed (crashes, pc reboots, etc..). I mainly bought it because you can connect/disconnect it on the go.. it is not soldered.

So I am thinking about buying a eGPU adapter with soldered socket instead now as according to Nando's research, it is more stable.

But i still want to be able to disconnect/connect the eGPU on the go as my mPCIe port is under my laptop keyboard..

so I am thinking about using a mPCIe extender like this one:

    http://www.hwtools.net/ExtenderBoard/P22S-P22F.html

anyone tried that and know if this works with eGPU adapters??

Hey guys, just thought I'd share some of my experience on using the GDC EXP Beast V8.

    • I couldn't get gen2 speeds to work on it at all. I told the guys I bought it from, and they were kind enough to send me another Beast, so I actually took it, removed the HDMI socket connection, and soldered the cable directly to the Beast's PCB. It still did not work in gen2 but it did work on gen1 still.
    • At PCIe gen1 speed, the GPU bus is almost always saturated (e.g. at 100% usage). This will be your bottleneck 90% of the time, unless you are only running a GPU stress test. You can download EVGA Precision x16 and see for yourself; put the bus usage on the overlay while you play a game and watch it. By comparison, I have another laptop with an nVidia dGPU, and I can watch its bus usage stay below 10% all the time, just because it is tied via x8 or x16 connection (and probably PCIe gen3).
    • I play CS:GO a lot and wanted an eGPU to up my frames; sadly I don't think this is a good solution for me. I have not tried a gen2 speed adapter, but I don't think it would work even then. With gen1 speeds I get micro-lags every time I see an enemy, likely because at that exact moment the processor and GPU are communicating vigorously, and my GPU bus doesn't allow the information to travel that fast. I wonder if the same will happen on gen2 speeds, but to a lesser extent.
    • The particular Beasts I received from GearBest had a few missing things about it. It was missing an on switch even when there was space for it. The delay switch (0sec - 7sec - 15sec) was there but if you look at the PCB, the components around it are completely missing, so the switch does nothing. And, the Beast has a USB port, but as I was soldering the cable I discovered that the USB port did not connect to the HDMI cable at all, so USB doesn't work (though I haven't tested it in reality). I think these are ways to cut costs on manufacturing...though admittedly these are tiny cost cuts.

    Hope that helps!

Using setup 1.3 and forcing gen2 on my EXP GDC V8, I could somehow 'achieve' gen2 but it is very unstable; crashing, restarts.  I can only play like 2 mins of game (tried battlefield hardline) and then it crashes or my laptop restarts.

    I sometimes get an error:

"Directx function "device->CreateBuffer(.... E_OUTOFMEMORY ("Direct3D could not allocate sufficient memory to complete the call."). GPU : "NVIDIA Geforce GTX 750TI", ...."

I don't know if it is related to the gen2 signaling issue that Nando talks about in the first page of this thread? Will another adapter like the pe4H works better?

hahaha!!! yeah you are right man!!

But I want to use a case but the EXP GDC wire is so short... is there a way to extend it? is it a standard hdmi cable?

Boot Setup 1.30, then use the PCIe Ports->Gen2 menu.

Setup 1.30 is available at  https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/files/file/87-diy-e-gpu-setup-130-by-Tech Inferno Fan/

thx for your reply. I tried this and gpuz detects that it is gen2 but for some reason... my laptop now uses the integrated GPU instead of my eGPU (nvidia GTZ 750 TI)...

When I try to open "Nvidia control panel", I get this error:

"you are not currently using a display attached to an nvidia gpu"

Trying to play a game says I am using intel integrated graphics and they cannot open///

    any clue?

  10. Ok today i formatted my ssd to install a fresh win10 32bit losing out my oem licence btw. But i still get a Bsod when i chainload with setup 1.3 (tried all chainloading method mbr mbr2 etc)

i get error Your device needs to be repaired.

    File \Windows\system32\winload.exe

    Error code 0xc000000e

    Ant clue?

  11. My dsl file starts with

It is normal that there is no 64-bit math support?

  12. should I buy the pearl p4E instead.. does it work better than the GDC beast? cuz I installed a second windows 10 for nothing .. setup 1.3x is not working on it... see my previous posts (btw this thread is a mess with tons of unanswered posts and posts just get ignored and disappears with so many posts)
