1. Hello,

I'm trying to type the command on terminal, but no password is required...why?

    Last login: Sun Jan 18 11: 08:44 on ttys000

    MBP-di-Gianni:~ Gianni$ sudo nvram boot-args="kext-dev-mode=1"

    MBP-di-Gianni:~ Gianni$ sudo nvram boot-args="kext-dev-mode=1"

    MBP-di-Gianni:~ Gianni$

    I cannot insert any password...why?

I had the same issue on mine. I solved it by inputing it a second time and then it asked me for a password. No Idea why it worked but it worked.. Check your boot arguments after with sudo nvram boot-args

  2. Sorta.

Firstly, my apologies for the lack of clarity (Note to self: don't post while donating blood)

Secondly, my problem is that any display plugged directly into the rMBP does not work, and only one works through the 970. I would like to either be able to drive them all off of the GTX 970, or drive all but one of them off of my rMBP and the remaining one off of the rMBP (It's a 4K monitor)

Thirdly, while that was my problem at one point, a driver reinstall solved it.

Just to be sure, your system is now working with 10.10.1, the 970 and your 4k display connected on the eGPU ? which web drivers please ? Is it stable? do you game, render or both please ?

  3. However, you may want to review http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/8619-tb2-macbooks-allow-monitors-used-egpus-osx.html#post117570 to see if perhaps the GTX780Ti is a better supported card in OSX on your machine than a GTX970.

I have a 15" early 2012 MBPRD so it is thunderbolt 1. Am I affected ? I read the link you provided but they do not have any definitive listing. They also do not list my MBPRD model so can't say. Anyone running an EVGA 970 successfully ?

The implementation hub does not have anything relevant to my setup also :/

  4. GTX770 superclocked edition rings warning bells. Quite a few Keplar cards were released with ASICs that could not hold the factory set overclock. If you are booting Windows then recommend setting lower reference clocks with MSI Afterburner or the EVGA Precision tool and do stability tests.

If 'stepping up' then consider grabbing a EVGA GTX970 SSC: Amazon.com: EVGA EVGA GeForce GTX 970 SSC ACX 2.0 4GB GDDR5 256bit, DVI-I, DVI-D, HDMI, DP SLI Ready Graphics Card Graphics Cards 04G-P4-3975-KR: Computers & Accessories . To ensure cleanest possible PCIe electrical signal you'd need to plug this card directly into the AKiTiO chassis. To do that would require either removal of the inner circuit board or bending the right side of the chassis out to allow cards longer than 210mm to fit.

Im running OSX 10.10.1 so no underclocking for me..

I am already running the card inside the akitio with barel to molex adaptor, I had to bend the back so I could not even sell it If I wanted to :/ I tried with powered riser instead too but no luck at all.

Any reason why 970 and not 980 ? I also read that the 780ti is actually more powerful and it is also less expensive, any thoughts on that ?

  5. Did you try everything? Change video card, change PSU, try a differnet power socket in case have dirty power, plug the video card into the AKiTiO and use a barrel-to-molex adapter to power the unit from the ATX PSU? Perusing the Implementation Guides you'll see users trying various different power configurations.

I'll mention too that in the expresscard side of things we have seen variation of Gen2 tolerance amongst vendors cards. On the very same system, some video cards can run Gen2 (PCIe 2.0), whereas a small number will BSOD out unless run at Gen1 (PCIe 1.x). Affected users seeing a video card swapout resolving the problem.

I believe the same issue will cause problems with Thunderbolt systems.

I just tried the molex to barrel adaptor today, changed my PCIe cable with no result at all. Same random kernel panics..

I only have two more things to do:

Experiment with different drivers or change my graphic card...

    This situation is beyond frustrating

Can someone with a working 10.10.1 system who play games tell me which driver they are using ? Im currently using WebDriver-334.01.02f02 but I have the same issue with apple ones so I am pessimistic that this is the problem..

Anyone having glitch issues in safari and ical ?

I have an EVGA GTX770 superclocked, any advice on which one to get instead? I might be able to benefit from the EVGA update program, anyone thinks I would benefit from maxwell achitecture with 970 or 980 ?

  6. This Thread is to help put together a list of stability reports on eGPU configurations. Please do not flood with comments.

It would be great if Everyone could post (and update if necessary) their own setup with:

    - Graphic card model

    - Laptop Model

    - OS Version

    - Driver version

    - Powered riser ?

    - PSU Model

    - What do you use your eGPU for ? (Rendering, Gaming, Browsing, Extended display)

    - Is the system stable ?

    - What type of issue do/did you encounter?

    - Did you manage to solve it and get a 100% stable system?

I hope I did not forget any important informations, If so add it to your post and I will update the guidelines accordingly.

Thank you for taking the time to do this. I hope this helps everyone get a better understanding.

    - Graphic card model: EVGA GTX770 2gb

    - Laptop Model: Macbook Pro Retina mid 2012 16gb

    - Thunderbolt Adapter model: Akitio Thunder 2

    - OS Version: 10.10.1

    - Driver version: WebDriver-343.02.01f01

    - Powered riser ?: Yes

    - PSU Model: Corsair RM 750

    - What do you use your eGPU for ? (Rendering, Gaming, Browsing, Extended display)

I use mine in extended display mode for gaming, Video playback, browsing but not rendering. Just as a normal 2nd display but accelerated basically

    - Is the system stable ?

    Not stable,

    - What type of issue do/did you encounter?

Random Freeze and restarts under any kind of application. Sometime just opening an application triggers a crash. Sometime I can play for 30mn, sometime 1mn. Also crashes with Netflix, etc..

Safary is very glitchy, Ical too

    - Did you manage to solve it and get a 100% stable system?

No at all but what I still have to try is:

    - Downgrade drivers to a version that someone says it is stable for them.

    - Change graphic card but from what I read before many models seem affected.

I will update if I can think of anything else to say

  8. Well... After changing my psu, and installing a powered pcie riser the problems are still there.

So now I have tried absolutely everything except replacing the graphic card but from what I can read on previous post I think that EGPU is an unstable solution and we should be warmed.

I have not seen any report from anyone on this forum confirming to have a 100% stable system when used for things other than Rendering applications.

I just want to be able to play games but my system hangs COMPLETELY RANDOMLY as everyone else still. I will be starting a new thread to answer specific stability questions which in my opinion seem completely overlooked in every guides I have read... Please look for my thread on stability that I will post shortly

  9. Hi Nesone,

Thanks for the tutorial, it was very useful for me.

Can you please comment on stability ? Do you use your yosemite system for games or you only do rendering ?

My system is unusable, I am having random freeze and restart with any applications (I guess kernel panic). Is your stable ?

I tried absolutely everything except changing the Graphic card.... I have the latest web drivers + 10.10.1 + EVGA GTX 770 + atikio

    Thanks in advance

  10. Hello,

Can you please specify how stable is your system ? Im having many troubles with mine (random freeze/restart) even with basic web browsing. Sometimes it works for an hour, sometime it freezes straight away.

Is your system 100% stable ?

    thanks

  11. Another post, maybe someone will be able to help:

    MBPRD 2012 + Atikio + EVGA GTX770 + 10.10.1

I am having stability problems... Random Freeze / restart. I just changed my PSU for a corsair RM 750 but still having the issue ://// I was really hopefull on that but it is a miss aparrently.

I tried with the latest webdrivers as well as the apple ones but nothing does the trick. Still random stability issues even when browsing internet.

Do you think my graphic card is faulty ?

Does anyone has a similar setup stable ? I am so disappointed, spent so much money and seem so close but can't make it work. Any help would be appreciated

Does anyone has a rock solid stable system please ???

  12. Finally got this EGPU working I think, need further testing but it seems stable enough with

MBPR mid 2012, 10.10.1, EVGA GTX770, Atikio box and latest Web drivers

Safari is very glitchy, hovers and videos especially are buggy. Graphics superimpose or flicker. As soon as I move safari to my laptop screen everything goes back to normal but If I drag it on my EGPU monitor bugs come back.

I saw that some people were having similar problems but anyone managed to get it fixed ? SAFARI is the best browser for me by far and it pains me to use firefox :/ I guess you win something but sometime you have to give up something else instead...

  13. Hello Everyone,

As many of you I am trying to setup an EGPU :)

My config: MBPRD mid 2012, 16 go ram, Intel I7, internal GT650m with Akitio Thunder2 + external 550w PSU + EVGA GTX770 on thunderbolt 1 under yosemite 10.10.1

I managed to get it working with the apple stock drivers but it was not very stable: after about 20mn the computer would freeze/restart so I decided to give a go to the official web drivers.

I have experiemented with a few packages including the latest WebDriver-343.02.01f01 but so far everything has been a disaster and it is alway the same issue:

The issue comes when I modify the NVDAStartup.kext. As soon as I modify it and restart a bizarre thing occurs:

-About half way through the OS loading bar, the screen suddenly doubles in resolution (everything is really small) and it is almost like there is no acceleration at all. refresh rate is unusalble.

-OS X sees the GT650m under "about my mac" but does not see the GTX770.

-Looking at the NVIDIA web driver panel nothing appears; not even the GT650m (Hence poor refresh rate I guess): It looks like the drivers are not loading correctly and/or detecting the cards somehow which makes me think it out be an easy fix but my knowledge is very limited.

reverting the NVDAStartup file does not fix the issue but reinstalling WebDriver-343.02.01f01 and everything goes back to normal but I do not have the EGPU of course.

So basically I cannot use any webdrivers so I cannot test anything... Thinking of building a PC :////

i heard about some startup commands but my knowledge is extremely limited there. I am repairing permissions every time and also tried to clear the cache under terminal but nothing works. Also tried reseting PRAM/SMC.

Is it true that I should not use the akitio PSU ?

Could not find any reference to this particular issue anywhere. Anyone experienced it ?

    I followed all the steps of Mark's guide [GUIDE] 2013 15" Macbook Pro GT750M + GTX780Ti@16Gbps-TB2 (Sonnet EE III-D) +OSX10.10

Sorry for all the noob questions

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Happy new year !
