  1. Intel 525 120gb drive when in use gets to 52 degrees C, however i don't think it's all from the drive. It's sitting in a small enclosure with other parts that generate heat after all. Temperature monitor used is HWmonitor.

so basic we need to cool down CPU & GPU ?

since they are the main reasons why a laptop is hot.

  2. Ideafan is good and should be used if you aren't comfortable with hardware mods. The only thing about ideafan is that there are small pauses between fan-speed bursts. I know it may not seem like much but getting rid of those pauses helped lower my laptop temps a lot. My GPU is currently running at 38°C and the CPU at 41°C on idle, and that's in 33°C weather.

Is that outdoor and on battery?

  3. Here's a few things I did to make my stock y500 boot faster.

replaced the Condusiv software-based ssd cache with PrimoCache.

Disabled hard drive energy saving in the Lenovo Energy managment software. This helped a lot.

Uninstalled the Lenovo Energy management software. Windows handles most of these functions on its own. In fact the battery calibration command disabled charging and forced me to send the laptop in for repair.

Uninstalled all the camera software. I rarely use my camera, and the functions it added were gimmicks.

replaced windows defender with a faster a/v. I've demo'd a lot and as of this writing, webroot has been the best (just the a/v product, not bundled with anything else.)

so, did you install ideafan to compensate the Dust removal function?

  4. My Y400 ran into some trouble a while back and still isn't fixed but I won't tell what happened to it here as I will post it on a new thread. Simply put, I had to mod the laptop fan so that it would run at 100% speed no matter what. It made the fan run louder but made my temps considerably lower. This is a post to show you how I did the mod.

    1. Open up the bottom cover of your Y400 or Y500

    2. Locate the cables for the fan.

    3. There should be four cables there. One red, one black, one yellow and one brown.

    4. Cut the brown wire. The brown wire is for the motherboard to control the fan speed. Once you cut it your laptop fan will run as fast as the dust cleaning process lets it in lenovo's energy management tool. This is the fan's normal speed. It was made to run slower by lenovo to make less noise.

I got the image above from this thread: http://forum.techinferno.com/lenovo-ibm/2773-y500-disassembled-pictures.html

It shows roughly where the cables should be for the Y400 and Y500.

    why not use ideafan?

  5. Ok, this is still happening. I was playing thru the Hallowed Hallow in BL2, and all of a sudden my FPS dropped into the teens. According to HW Monitor my GPU temp had reached a max of 75*c, and pulling up nVidia Inspector showed my current core clock at 405mHZ.

Had similar problem. I simply restart my machine and lower the overclocking.

  6. The 768p panel, even if you discount the resolution, has horrible viewing angles and contrast. On a y400 here with the 768p display. Blacks are....well, they're grey :/ It sucks when you're trying to play The Evil Within because it's all...like dark grey. Even if you're running a single 750m, you could still hopefully get better contrast with that FHD panel

really? I thought it was the game color scheme.

  7. Hello, techinferno!

Help me please, i have problem.

I update bios from 2.02 to 2.04 and when i launch and my notebook restarted, 100% install complete, he restart again and he give me that error:

EFI Network 0 for IPv6 boot failed

    and

EFI Network 0 for IPv4 boot failed

but hard disks not missing! All normal.

Model of notebook ~ Lenovo y500.

yeah your bios might of reset you could try setting to ahci mode and make sure your hd is your first boot drive, move network boot option down below hdd, odd , usb etc. Unless your operating system is on your network which I dont think this is the case here. the reinstall might not be required i dont know either. You might need to go through and enable legacy boot if there is an option on Lenovo.

I did have similar problem when updating bios from 2.02 to 2.04 before but solved it by just enabling legacy boot. Yes, there is legacy boot option in lenovo.

    mine is y400.

  8. If there is not much of a difference in performance then price would be the only other factor and I would think that going SLI would probably be the cheaper option but I may be wrong.

That said, I don't have a Y400 but, if I recall correctly from when I last researched buying a laptop, the Y400 does not allow for SLI unless the swappable bay does indeed allow for this to take place - If I were you I would first confirm if you could indeed go SLI and the reexamine your options.

You might also want to find out if you would need to upgrade the power supply to support SLI.

Sorry I cannot assist you more but I hope this helps,

    Thanks.

    I've done my homework.

Yes, I'll need a need more powerful power supply, a modded y500 GPU[gt 750m] ultrabay since y400 GPU ultrabay doesn't exist and some bios update.

the total cost would be 'round 1/3 of a new laptop with gtx 860m.

but still, the words "new is always better." in Barney Stinson voice keep on ringing in my head.

  9. They will heat up each other eventually, since both heatpipe is soldered to common fins.

Those are great temps, but good luck with the mod, if you are doing it, and any feedback is welcome.

Main pcb did not flexed, but the heatsink did. When used too much spacer with cpu, the fan housing bended so much, it pushed the keyboard up...

Be extra careful.. Ultrabay PCB is weaker, smaller, no backplate, don't wreck it.

Don't do it. If the unit is new, test it first, if it has any flaws.

Don't loose warranty, without being sure there are no issues, other than high temps.

Ultrabay can be opened, because there is no sticker on it.

Yes, VRAM chips, GPU VRM, CPU VRM coils.

Mind suggesting the size and brand of thermal pad?
