  1. @Tech Inferno Fan - Yeah, its a bummer that I can't get the Optimus to work. After reading through some of the posts I haven't seen anybody been able to get it to work. For my current work flow I'm using the output to drive the Oculus which acts as an external monitor. When I travel between work and home I have an extra monitor at each location. It's not ideal, but it is working. I guess there would need to be some type of way to disable to the 750M and only run on the Intel chip and the GTX980. However, I don't even see the Intel chip in the display adapters list. Maybe I could try to do some experimenting later on. - - - Updated - - - @Morty - I forgot my cell phone today, so I can try to post something tomorrow. However, I just followed this guide: http://forum.techinferno.com/implementation-guides/7580-%5Bguide%5D-2014-15-macbook-pro-iris-gtx780%4016gbps-tb2-akitio-thunder2-win8-1-a.html#post103029 You can see how he has it setup in one of the photos. All I had to do was take apart a molex to SATA connector. Removed the red & black cables. Then bought a 2.5" barrel plug from Radio Shack. Soldered it together, measured the voltage to make sure it was correct, and it worked perfect. - - - Updated - - - @Sachin10 - Yeah the GTX 980 is 10.5" long so that might not work. Looks like a nice case, though. I think I'm going to try do design something and add some extra port holes for fans. When doing some of the benchmark scores the card got pretty damn hot. So I would probably pick an enclosure with some good ventilation.
  2. Just wanted to say thanks for all the info in here. I was able to get my build up and running fairly easily. In boot camped Windows 8.1 I'm able to run the laptop screen, a monitor, & the Oculus DK2. Frame rates are so much better its insane. Here is what I ended up building. -Laptop: MPB mid 2014 - GTX 750M -EGPU: GTX980 -Akitio thunder 2 - soldered a molex connection to run in off the 12v PSU. Works great. -500W PSU -Bought a riser, but after I took apart the Akitio it wasn't necessary. Haven't had any issues with the card crashing. Right now, I'm trying to figure out how to make this more portable. I don't really want to put it into a small atx case, so I'm thinking of constructing something to enclose it. I called a hacker space where they are able to cut out different materials. But I'll have to design the enclosure myself. Does anybody have any plans, ideas of good designs, or material recommendations? Thanks!
  3. Yes, for being mobile and trying to hit a high frame rate really pushes the latest MBP. This type of setup will hopefully remove the GPU restrictions and hit 75fps for the DK2. Hope that will help the current project I'm working on not make certain people sick. I no longer seem to be affected by the slower fps which makes me feel like I've got my VR Sea Legs
  4. edit: @jcagara08 hahahah I'm not too sure about that. I think nado4 is wearing the crown. I just want to be able to make cool things that don't make people feel sick in VR. 75FPS is hard to hit on the laptop.
  5. Thank you for the reply! I will go ahead with the affordable option of the AKiTiO Thunder 2. I really wish there was an affordable full sized PCI-E option. Here will by my configuration. Hopefully it will work out. -MPB 15" - GT750M -Akito Thunder 2 -Silver Stone Strider Plus 500W PSU - This looks like it will be the smallest option for a 500W PSU, incase I want to construct an enclosure around it. Are there any good posts about how to build one? -EVGA GTX980
  6. Hey, I'm have recently purchased the new Macbook Pro 15" with the NVIDIA 750m. I'm working on some VR games and I wanted to upgrade to the newly release NVIDIA GTX 980. I was wondering if someone could point me to the right direction. It looks like the there is the new 7.0 version of the EXP GDC card. I wasn't sure if anybody had tried it out yet. After reading through the forums it looks like this is what I should order: EVGA GTX 980 EXP GDC 7.0 500W ATX PSU Then I would be able to use the EXP GDC card and plug that into express port on the side of the MBP. Bootcamp to windows, install the drivers and I should be good to go? It would be nice to find an enclosure, but I really can't drop $1000 on a box. I'll have to either leave it exposed or maybe build something else. Thanks!
