For enable safeguard against meltdown, you need install Windows update only.

For enable safeguard against spectre, you need install Windows update and new CPU microcode. In laptop Lenovo Y410p / Y510p we can see Haswell CPU, for that CPU Intel already present new microcode 23, with spectre/meltdown fix. Therefore, if it's needed, we can change in any bios versions the old microcode to the new one, any time now.

It is "safe" to say that fix is stable enough for modding it in - I volunteer my laptop as guinea pig for The Fix.

  2. A little more than a week ago, Microsoft released emergency Windows updates to deactivate previous buggy security updates from Intel. This happened after the chip maker acknowledged that its firmware updates meant to address the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities could cause system instability, including random reboots.

Intel made very little progress on the fixes, Haswell has no stable MCU fixes

  3. About y510p i7 4700MQ overclocking.

OC form 3.4GHz up to 3.6GHz is possible via Intel XTU or ThrottleStop 8.

I would suggest undervolting CPU anyway -75mV should be stable with or without OC.

Many units require CPU/GPU repaste - it was done poorly by Lenovo.

Klem made a 3.08 BIOS/UEFI biosmod but I got cold feet before flashing.

If anyone is interested in testing Klem's Biosmod whisper him, most of people here wanted latest Biosmod.

Is Bios 2.07 with EC 3.05 stable? (If the new mod was successful would be possible to mix 2.07 bios with EC3.08)

  4. Arctic Silver 5 is one of the better compounds on market. its electrically non conductive, but its not an insulator.

Ceramique 2 i recommended is slightly less effective but also electrically non conductive and an insulator.

    Other safe bets(besides Arctic Silver - 5)

    Arctic - MX 2

    Arctic - MX 4

    Prolimatech PK 1

    Phobya HeGrease Extreme

@Also I can't decide between those two cooling pads, which one do to recommend?

Amazon.com: Targus Lap Chill Mat for Laptop, Black/Gray (AWE55US): Electronics

Amazon.com: Cooler Master NotePal X-Slim Ultra-Slim Laptop Cooling Pad with 160mm Fan (R9-NBC-XSLI-GP): Computers & Accessories

Average cooling may be as good as there was none. Some cheaper models offer only placebo effect.

Read carefully more articles about pads. Some articles are sponsored and may deceive. Take some time to read before deciding. Buying twice is a worst scenario.

I belive in heavy metal pads I recommended were theoretically for 17 inch laptops.

NC-2000 i mentioned is very heavy and smartly enginereed.

    U3+ has optimal(manual)l fan placement.

U2+(model for 15 inch laptops)is also relatively good - manual fan placement

  5. Thanks for the links, I'll try to get a cooling pad, for the compound I use a cheap one but was my only option and that one you recommend it's just toooooo expensive :(.

GC Extreme 3,5g should be enough to repaste 10-12 processors.

other example Arctic Silver Ceramique 2 $4.99 for 2,7g

    Arctic Silver CMQ2-2.7G Céramique 2 Tri-Linear Ceramic Thermal Compound - OEM - Newegg.com

So get a bit cheaper one look at few reputable compound tests. Just don't pick compound from the bottom of the charts.

  6. OK so I end up with this:

I test a game for about 30 minutes (up to the red line) and this is the best I can get but only with the ultrabay GPU downvolted.

Can this make any damage to the GPU?, also the only way I find to apply those settings on boot is by creating a shortcut and execute it at boot.

In short term it will not damage in long term it may.

Do you use cooling pad? - It may reduce temperature by 5 to 7 celsius degrees.

    My recommendation:

Cooler Master NotePal U3 PLUS - Laptop Cooling Pad with Three Configurable High Performance Fans - Black - Newegg.com

    or

    ZALMAN Notebook Cooler ZM-NC2000 Black - Newegg.com

Did you use premium (non metal) thermal compound for repaste?

  7. For those who don't like the restrictions Lenovo put on their system, here's a BIOS mod that will get you back at least some of the freedom you should have over your own hardware.

I know that it will sound odd However, can You make remove wifi white-list fix only 3.05 bios?

Reason - The most valuable feature included, low profile, safer before full blown mod will be rock stable.

  8. Hello.

So here's the thing. I flashed your modded bios 3.5 for y510p, and it was working. But only for one gpu, and i was reading that SLI users have to flash ultrabay gpu too. So i did it. Without any error. Then i went to bios to check these new options and i undervolted cpu (-65). Then i saved changes, and i exit bios. After reboot, screen was black (like no light at all), my mouse and pendrive didnt light, only keyboard and power button was lighting. And i felt warm air from fans, after some time it was more warm.

I hope i explained it well, and i am truly asking you for some help. I would really appreciate it.

    Regards,

    Cassiel.

    Its 750M or 755M issue?

  9. Latest is 5.165, but it doesn't matter.

So theoretically anyone can flash it(ultrabay nvidia card) with Windows nvflash, just replacing original file with your moded is required.

    for 755M get files from

NVIDIA GeForce GT755M Second VGA BIOS Update for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) - IdeaPad Y410p, Y510p - Lenovo (US)

rename 755mOC.rom to A832.rom and replace original A832.rom with it

flash with method provided by Lenovo

    for 750M get files from

NVIDIA GeForce GT750M Second VGA BIOS Update for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) - IdeaPad Y410p, Y510p - Lenovo (US)

rename 750mOC.rom to 9D3D.rom and replace original 9D3D.rom with it

flash with method provided by Lenovo

Also modded BIOS will work with stock(without voltage tinkering potential) or modded firmware 750M/755M.

EITED multiple times because errors in post.

  10. Main post updated with instructions for flashing v3.05. Let me know if anything is unclear.

My only suggestion attach 510p-Y410p_v207_[stock].zip and Fptw64_(8_series).zip files into first or second post post.

Is the reverting from modded 3.05 to stock 3.05 theoretically possible with lenovo 3.05 bios update file?

Or it should done be after some bios revert/ec revert?

Could you give some hints, because for majority of people warranty is crucial.

I know I've asked just it was posted much later due to late moderation and posting final 3.05 makes thread reboot.

Could you explain how did you optimized VBIOS for performance?

  11. what network card is compabile with lenovo y510p? I want to upgrade it and probably use it on a ac card!

Any HMC form factor card with two antenna connectors(2x2).

    Comments:

    * Confirmed by Lenovo support. Also note its b, g ,n +bt card, no A or AC.

**Not sure which of these two 2230s is witelisted in Y510P bios, maybe both.
