  1. Hi@all,

i also consider to setup and assemble an eGPU solution. But I am still wondering about the advantage of optimus enabled:

Is it "just" the use of the external eGPU in connection with the main (built in) screen - or will it also boost the performance? Afaik the optimus technology will drop the performance. Regarding the mobility aspects of an eGPU solution optimus would be great but than i have to deal with less performance - right?

@Dschijn: it is probably to naive to mentioned it but maybe a PRAM-Reset (alt+cmd+p+r pressed while rebooting) could help?

    Hi,

In our case optimus compresses the data sent to the eGPU. Because the bottleneck is in most cases this connection, it speeds up everything.

Weird as it sounds I think the USB is a low powered one (drawing power straight from the EC/mPCIe bus), even though it should be down converted from the main power rail.

Have you tested a thumb drive or some other low power devices?

A now tested thumb drive works flawlessly, I could read with 28MB/s. So it really seems to be too less power for the G13. Probably I'll try to get a powered usb hub later.

  3. Awesome, okay ill be sure to purchase the software soon. Sorry if this is a stupid question but what do you mean by whitelisting?

Sometimes only some WiFi modules are unlocked in the bios to be used. That can obviously cause trouble if you connect an egpu to this port.

  4. Setup 1.30 will probably list your port as follows if say the eGPU is attached to port8: [email protected] [eGPU]@x1.1

The first [email protected] is the most important part. It indicates that that port is switched to enable Gen2 speed. The rest of the details suggesting it's running x1 1.0, which in most cases is due to power management placing the card in Gen1 mode to save power. To confirm it's running in Gen2, put a load on the eGPU under Windows (eg: NVidia control panel->Adjust image, NVidia logo spinning) and observe what GPU-Z reports. If it says x1 2.0, then it's running Gen2.

By default it was set to x1.1 but I could switch to x1.2. That's what I have in Windows now too. How can I see if Nvidia Optimus is active?

Not sure what the stop at "VPT" is. Can hit F9 to step through the load to see if indeed vpt is halting the system. You can contact me offline to troubleshoot that if it's bothersome.

If not running PCI compaction then there is no need to generate a new devcon.txt file. Nonetheless, generating one can get rid of warnings and give you the correct configuration for PCI compaction. It's simple to create a new devcon.txt file. Just run c:\eGPU\eGPU-setup-mount to get V: drive, then run v:\devcon\mkdevcon .

After I created the devcon.txt I can get in Setup 1.30 even with the GPU plugged in.

I have another question: After chainloading/using startup.bat I am again at the grub2 menu (where I can switch between Linux/Windows/Setup 1.30). Is it possible to start Windows directly after chainloading/using startup.bat?

  5. Hi,

I brought Setup 1.30 to disable my dGPU to get NVIDIA Optimus working with a GTX 670. I'm accessing Setup 1.30 over Grub2. My first problem is, that with the eGPU connected the Software stops at "VPT 2.01 Vivid color palette loaded to VGA DAC." The only thing I can do then is to reboot. With the eGPU unplugged I get this only sometimes. The next thing then is that I get a warning that I don't have a C:\config\devcon.txt. Is it better to have one, although I don't want to run a PCI compaction? And as a last point the NVIDIA GTX 670 is listed with x1. 1 speed, although I use an EXP GDC and the Intel Sandy Bridge platform which should result in x1.2.

  6. Appreciate your replies man!

    7950 is @ 200W

    7870 Ghz ed @ 180W

But to my concern load power consumption results for an R9 270X is at 280 Watts as per anandtech tests to (it was Crysis 3)

That's why I could not decide but few minutes back found a very nice deal of a Radeon 7950 @ 115 bucks at the bay.

BSODs and glitches will be there when GPU is going to need more watt power than 220W right?

I don't want to use an ATX thats why LOL

But I am sure I will build a PC by Q1 2015, be it in SFF or mini ITX style.

And will definitely use this boy 7950 on it if it manages to survive.

    budget constraints.....

    I got a lenovo G500 i5-3230M+HD 8570M

I am not even sure if the mPCI-e port on this is on its whitelist, perhaps Nando4 setup 1.30 can eliminate that I am right?

The 280W at the anandtech test is for the whole system, not only the GPU. In general the TDP is what the GPU will consume at maximum.

  7. Setup 1.30 can help in your HD6630M equipped Vostro 3450 to achieve two important benefits : (1) Run your link at Gen2 speed, doubling bandwidth from the current Gen1 you are seeing and (2) disable the dGPU so that NVidia Optimus activates. With the latter you'll gain x1 pci-e compression accelerating (mostly) DX9 up to 300% and provide an accelerated internal LCD mode.

That's nice to hear. I'll buy Setup 1.30 maybe later. For now I'm happy to have increased performance compared to the dGPU.

  8. Hi,

My EXP GDC v6 arrived from China arrived yesterday. Because I got everything working, right out of the box, I want to show you, what I did.

    First my system:

    Dell Vostro 3450

    4+1GB DDR3 RAM

    i5-2410M

    AMD Radeon HD6650 + Intel HD3000

    Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit

    Samsung 830 128GB (100GB Windows | 28GB Ubuntu)

Toshiba HDD 500GB in the optical drive bay

For the graphics driver (if I remember correctly) I installed first the AMD driver distributed by Dell (that must have been Video_AMD_W8_A00_Setup-6HYYP_ZPE.exe). Later I installed this 13.4 Mobile Catalyst directly from AMD's website. I had this running for around a year before I started with the egpu stuff. During this time I could switch between the Intel HD and the AMD GPU for gaming. Then some weeks ago I updated the Intel HD driver with intelhd_win64_152822.exe to Version 9.17.10.3517 from 2014/03/20. The catalyst control center was still installed, but I couldn't switch between the GPUs any more and I got a yellow exclamation mark in the device manager. Now to the eGPU stuff itself:

    EXP GDC v6

MSI GTX 670 Poweredition OC 2GB

    Dell D220P-01 12V 18A power adapter

To install the NVIDIA driver before connecting the egpu was not possible. That's why I connected everything and inserted the expresscard adapter while the computer was running. I got no signal on the HDMI display connected to the eGPU but I expected that before. Now I was able to install the NVIDIA driver (exactly: 340.43-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-beta.exe) although the device manager didn't show the GTX 670 but only a strange Microsoft VGA device or somewhat. All the time the GTX 670 fans were running very noisily and at full speed. After a reboot, the GTX 670 was shown in the device manager but with error code 43. But then I powered the notebook off and started again. During the windows logo the egpu fans stopped for one second and started again then. First, I thought something was wrong with the power adapter, but that seems to be a special function of the EXP GDC because then I could use the second screen connected to the eGPU.

The thing is: I didn't need Setup 1.x to disable the dGPU. I was surprised myself, but that's it. On a desktop computer (with the same GPU) I got 3Dmark 11 score of 9699, now as eGPU I have 7399 which is ok. Interesting is that 3Dmark thinks to have benched to AMD 6650 card, but for that the result is way to high.

No some screenshots (I use a German system, but you should recognize what is meant):

    GPU-Z of the GTX 670:

I was very happy to be able to skip all the Setup 1.x stuff because I save 25$ and have less problems with Grub2 what is used to switch between Windows and Ubuntu.

Edit: I see, I only have PCIe 1.1 although 2.0 should be possible. Is there a way to fix that and get a bit more speed?

  9. Hi,

I'm not sure if me question is right here or if I should have started a new thread. Does anybody have expirence with the new PE4C? On bplus it looks available now (I don't know since when). I'm new to this topic and like to try it out with my Dell Vostro 3450 (with Expresscard).
