  1. I am having issues flashing my Alienware 17 with a GTX 980M from hidevolution. Everytime I open mnvflash the program crashes...

    OS: Windows 8.1

What do you mean by crashing, what is the error?

If you have nVidia drivers installed, I would grab DDU and uninstall them in safe mode first then reboot back to regular Windows, disable any anti-virus or other security software, close all apps, and try it that way.

  2. Thanks for testing it and letting me know. Makes me wonder if 10 would be any better for it or if it would not work at all. Since I had a major dispute with Google that ended in me getting blocked from purchasing on Google Play I would probably have to use the iOS version. The iPad Air would be good for something then...

  3. Yeah, I guess you're right about that... reading the reviews. They did not scare me off, but that is definitely research in the simplest terms.

I saw some critical reviews about it not working on Nexus, but there again... might be user incompetence. Hard to say without trying it. I will test it later with Windows 8.1 on my M18xR2 or P570WM and see what happens. I am on my M18xR1 up in my office right now and it is not set up as dual boot machine (only has Windows 7).

I saw the comments about not working on Lollipop as well which would make my Nexus 6 no good but I have a Nexus 7 that just gets used for a second device to store my Google authenticator app that I could use.

  4. No research on my part. Saw it and thought it looked like a cool thing to mess around with. I noticed it was only $5 and read the bad reviews, but figured for 5 bucks it was worth finding for myself. So far, so good. I haven't tried overclocked benching with it yet. If it turns out to be stable, I might have finally found a good use for a pathetic touchscreen tablet. An 8 or 10-inch tablet would be a lot better than a small phone display for monitoring clock speeds and temps.

Well in my mind, reading the reviews is pre-purchase research, that's what I was referring to. As for the screen size, I have a Nexus 6 so I think it would be the perfect size for monitoring if it works with 8.1

    And lol @ surround sound!

  5. Wow, I just discovered even the audio outputs to my Android phone, LOL. That's too funny. There is a momentary delay with the audio using WiFi, which is probably to be expected. Everything I have tested streaming from PC over WiFi always has a slight delay (WiDi, Chromecast, etc.). I have not tested using USB yet. It's cool that the audio works as well.

Lol that could come in handy since my phone has better speakers than the laptop =/

  6. Hey guys, check this out. It's called iDisplay and you can grab it from the Google Play store. You can use this to access your Android or iOS phone or tablet as a wireless (or USB) display and drag HWiNFO64 to it to monitor stuff while gaming or benching, LOL. It works just like a Windows desktop extended display to a second wired monitor.

That app has some really bad reviews on the Play Store, especially with Windows 8.1 and the developer has apparently been quiet since December. Lots of people saying "should have read the reviews, doesn't work, lags, causes BSOD" and the like.

  7. Hey guys, was the vbios on the OP from a dell card ? I suspect it could be from a clevo ?

I installed a clevo gtx 970m on my m17x r2 but colors are messed up , other than that the card is fully working so though of giving this vbios a shot.

(colors messed up - same as hd 5870m with a1 vbios on m15x )

    thanks

I would use Prema's vbios on Clevo machines. I'm not sure what base was used to make svl's but Clevo machines can be really picky about the vbios you use.

  8. I'm using Prema's BIOS for quite a while now, they're great!

Today I wanted to boot Linux from a USB stick, but I didn't succeed. The Bootable USB stick shows up in the boot menu but after selecting it, it proceeds with my normal OS.

I tried to play a bit with the BIOS settings, without succes. The USB stick is bootable, because I've also tested on my desktop PC.

Anyone has any idea why it didn't work?

Change the BIOS setting for UEFI to Others which allows you to boot from a non UEFI drive and select the drive in the boot menu.

  9. Oh well. This is actually second laptop I had it happen to, I thought it was one time thing. Hell no! I am sending it for rma tomorrow. Problem is that I'm far and won't get it back for like a month. next time in buying sager. Tired of asus garbage. Thank you for your research friend. Hopefully they don't see that my gpu 970m running 1458mghz core and 6Ghz memory lol

Yeah I can't believe that they don't have a failsafe. It appears to be a problem that has plagued their machines since at least 2011 from what I saw on the forums and its not uncommon at all.

As for your overclock, they'll probably notice if the reprogramming of the system BIOS doesn't fix the issue (clocks that high you must be using modded vbios, right?) but it seems like since this happens so often they rush the fix and get the machine back to you. It wouldn't at all surprise me if they just pull the chip out, reprogram it, stick it back in and verify it POSTs and then send it back without further investigation.

So stupid to not have a failsafe...

  10. Please help. I updated the bios on asus g751JT from 205 to 206 and it turned off for some reason while erasing the bios. I need to recover somehow. No post. hdd lights and charger lights as well as dvd rom work. I am on deployment in kuwait and can't rma it. Laptop is only source of entertainment. Please help

You might want to post on the ROG forum for that

    http://rog.asus.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?198-G771-G751-G551-and-G501-Gaming-Notebooks

I know on their desktop motherboards, ASUS generally has a way to recover from a bad BIOS flash (my motherboard actually has a button that all I do is put the BIOS on a USB card, stick it in a USB port and hold down that button) but I don't know about their notebooks. Looking at the manual for the system, it mentions nothing about recovering from a failed flash so you may have to contact ASUS and RMA it.

Edit: I did some research and unfortunately bad BIOS flashes require an RMA to get the chip reprogrammed by ASUS. They have no failsafe. If you were using the windows utility, it appears that if you do it from an NTFS partition it will almost always brick and the recommendation is to do it directly from the BIOS screen with a FAT32 USB drive. Wish I had better news for you.

  11. I followed the instructions in reader doc. My system is pcspecialist ( clevo w230ss) bios ver 4.5.6. Everything flashed fine when everything done it shut down.I removed battery for one minute when powered up blank screen. Pressing F2 or any other key doesn't do any thing only back-lit key working fine. Even connecting with external monitor not showing any thing. One thing my system is FHD and monitor I'm using is very old not even hd when I connect cable it shows going in sleep mode. I've flashed bios many times but this is my first time flashing any molded bios. Purchased system yesterday. Any suggestions pls?

Follow instructions for recovery - https://biosmods.wordpress.com/bios-recovery/

If the machine is not shutting off and has a black screen it can be recovered.

  12. I can agree with silicon lottery

but although I used max voltage 1.2V it crashed and freezed

    and now

I DOWNLOADED THE LATEST NVIDIA DRIVER 345.20 AND SHOCKED :67:

You can do OVERCLOCK as before and there is no RESTRICTION...! :bananalama:

We knew about no OC restrictions in that one but we need 347+ series to be unlocked.

    As for OC, I haven't pushed mine but I got a 3dmark 11 extreme run on stock volts @ 1293MHz. http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/9224246

    Firestrike - http://www.3dmark.com/fs/3929982

  13. funny, i compared heaven, firestrike and valley with maxxed out settings at max. resolution (2880x1620 in my case) and found that valley is the most demanding out of those three ;)

Odd. I found maxed out Heaven was the most taxing. Weird. Valley at max had little impact after an hour while Heaven would reach its highest temps in about 15 minutes.

Firestrike extreme looped on the first test is a good burn too though.

  14. I need to flash the VBIOS on a 670M to an older version because my Sager does not recognize it, and I need to use someone else's laptop to do it.

Does the computer flashing the VBIOS need to be a Sager also, or can I flash it with any Clevo (MSI, Alienware, etc.)?

Also, is there anyone in Maryland in the United States that would help me out with this? :-D

Or are there any companies that will flash a VBIOS?

    Thanks!

Your best bet is to find someone with an Alienware machine willing to do it. I had to pull my 880M cards out and flash them in my M17xR1 a good four or five times. For some reason, Clevo machines have issues with svl7s vbios mods and will soft brick, especially if you are not in UEFI mode.

An alternative is replacing the vbios chip, you can generally find them on eBay.

Depending on your reseller, they may flash the card for you but they'd likely charge you for the service and void you warranty if you aren't already out of warranty. I'd use this step as a last resort.

You could try calling some local laptop repair places and see if they can do it for you as well.
