  1. The problem with turning off optimus nowadays, (I say that because it used to be possible to shut it off with a bios hack) is that your discrete card -physically- does not have a connection to the display. The way optimus works on modern systems is, the Nvidia card writes directly to the intel GPU's framebuffer, instead of the screen. this allows the discrete GPU to shut off entirely at a moment's notice, without disturbing any software that isn't using it. The downside to this is that if you were to somehow shut off the intel IGP, your laptop's display and any connectors that are wired through it would not function -at all-. Some laptops ship with the intel GPU disabled, such as the ASUS G750 series. On those laptops, the Nvidia GPU is wired directly to the screen. This means you can have your 120hz/3d display, but you cannot turn off the nvidia GPU, and battery life suffers. Long story short, it would take a miracle to disable optimus on a modern system that is configured with it, because the video output depends on having the intel IGP there to drive it.
  2. I noticed that in windows 8, my MSI GT70-2OD does not charge if the battery is above 90% when i plug it in. I think this is by design, because I also have a fujitsu tablet with windows 7, and it's always refused to charge either of the batteries if they are above 90% respectively. It wears down the battery faster if you charge it starting at 90%. Now, if it will not charge up past 95% at all, drain the battery all the way down, and then charge it all the way up again, and then drain it all the way down once more to calibrate it.
  3. The cooler boost 2 is intended to maximize cooling for long gaming sessions, where the laptop is the most likely to overheat. HOWEVER, I have a GT70-2OD, and the fan is starting to wobble a little after about 5 months of heavy use. I get the feeling that I may have to replace it soon. a good alternative to cranking the fan to 100% through the cooler boost is the GT70 fan control application, although I can't remember where it's hosted at. With it, you can set the fan to 70% for example.
  4. I'm dreading the day this happens to me. I'm rocking the GT70-2OD, and I just know the power adapter is going to be the first thing to die. I tested the temperature with an IR gun, and after a few hours of gaming, sitting on a flat surface, it reads 60C, and is uncomfortable to hold. I've been happy with the laptop so far, but i know the stock power brick is not enough, especially after overclocking.
