Him i'm using your bios mod for my lenovo y400, and there are some options in video config i cannot figure out.  With many hours of googling this stuff i have come no closer.  maybe you can help.   I use my laptop as a desktop, monitor, external periphs, etc.   i want to be able to use bios on my monitor (connect through Hdmi, and or VGA connection on laptop) do you know which settings i need to change in order to get the desired results?   i tried many things before and i bricked a mobo. this is my second.  dont want to make same mistake but i cant find anymore info about the settings.

    thank you

Have you tried something like this? http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19508313

Basically, mash bios button then try F1 or FN F1 to switch to external display.

    Are you sure?

Is this true? Has this person tried using a device that uses a Mini PCIE connection like a TV tuner or a full size Intel Wifi WiMax bluetooth card? Generally, mSata ssds don't work on Mini-PCIE.

So it was a while ago I read it and I may be confused on what they actually plugged in, but I know a person soldered the connector and tried a device and it did not work.  That doesnt mean they plugged the wrong type of device in or did it right.  Just relaying what I read.  I can try and find the post...

Step 1: Go to your MSI Afterburner Profiles folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\MSI Afterburner\Profiles)
Step 2: Right-click the file named "VEN_10DE&DEV..." and go > Properties > Security
Step 3: Select "Edit" and then click on "Users (username\Users)" and with the permission boxes below, check "Allow" for the first box - Full control. Click OK and OK again (this allows the file to be saved after editing it).
Step 4: Now you can open the file named "VEN_10DE&DEV..." in WordPad and replace everything you see with this:

    [Startup]
    Format=2
    CoreVoltageBoost=
    PowerLimit=
    ThermalLimit=
    ThermalPrioritize=
    CoreClkBoost=
    MemClkBoost=
    [Settings]
    VDDC_Generic_Detection=1

Step 5: Save the file and restart MSI Afterburner
Step 6: Go into MSI Afterburner settings and check the boxes under General > "Unlock voltage control" and "Unlock voltage monitoring" then click OK and restart Afterburner.
Final: GPU voltage control is unlocked and can be used now up to +100mV as well as monitoring GPU voltage in the OSD.

Well I spoke too soon... so this unlocked the voltage control, however changing the voltage and saving it did not actually change the voltage.  And yes I did put a load on the card (furmark) to test the load voltage.  It stays at 1v.  Tried 50mV ad 100mV etc etc.... no dice.  I know I can change the voltage because Nvidia Inspector lets me.  Any thoughts?

Did that, found a cfg for each card, did it for both.  Voltage control and monitoring now unlocked, awesome!  Thank you!

you can make clock shortcuts in nvidia inspector which makes switching even easier...just open the icon from your desktop. why go through all the trouble to unlock afterburner?

Yes I was using the shortcuts but I found it applied the voltage and overclocks inconsistently, like one card would change and the other wouldnt.  Also I like Afterburner's monitoring a lot better and so I had both open... just seemed kludgy.  Thanks though.

  5. I repurposed my bluetooth dongle and got a dedicated logitech wireless media keyboard, I mainly use my laptop with my TV, so I need to be able to couch surf on it.  Anyway when I need to use bluetooth for whatever, I have to reboot the PC, BT comes back, works fine.  But if PC goes to sleep, BT goes away.  And yes I have "Let Windows put this device to sleep" unchecked.  Anyway it is a goofy quirk on a laptop I have otherwise been pretty darn happy with.

  6. If you have another computer you could pop the drive out, and plug it in to your other computer as a USB or via SATA etc, depending if you have a external drive shell.   Then backup your stuff and plug the drive back in and do a restore.

    This can also help:

Same thing though, back up what you can to another computer.

  7. You bet.  Looks good to me, I get a similar readout.  It will take some time to notice the effects, but once it establishes your common used files etc, it really speeds certain things up, especially boot times.

  8. OK I got good news.  I saw in the main Y500 bios mod thread that someone tried using NVflash for Windows and got their ultrabay flash to take.  So I tried it using the latest version of NVflash for windows and boom, my ultrabay is now unlocked and shows the modded bios.  So I don't know if its something screwy with the version of Dos NVflash were using or what but the Windows one works.  Give that a shot.

  9. Same issue here.  Something with Windows 10 must be causing the problem.  I had some issues with the modded vbios previously in Windows 8.1 where the ultrbay GPU would work and after a month it would go into questionable or not working status and I would have to reflash or flash back to stock vbios.   I am using the .33 modded vbios from the sticky.  I havent tried that .3A bios..

I read this thread and thought I would test if I am having the issue and I am.  So flashed to the OC unlocked vbios for the ultrabay GPU and it will not overclock past 135mhz.  So we obviously need a fix for the bios for someone who knows how.  I would be glad to donate some money if someone were to dig into the bios and see if they could find a fix.  I would be happy to be a guinea pig for testing too.  Thanks.

Edit:  Tried that modded .3A bios and still no luck.

  10. Ive been using express cache myself.  I bought the version of the Y500 without an SSD.  Shortly after I bought a 32GB Crucial mpcie SSD and installed it myself.  I then dealt with the exact question as I was trying to figure out how to make sure it worked.  I ended up going with ExpressCache, though I also had the Intel Rapid Storage on my system.  ExpressCache can be a little confusing as there isnt a specific utility, its all command line based.  But if you get it installed you can confirm it working via the command line and then you are good.  As you may be aware your SSD will not show up under my computer.

This is what I followed to get it working:

  11. Newbie here, so bear with me... Apologies in advance for the long post, just want to be thorough...

After having some issues with my y400 recently, I performed a full system recovery. I ran and installed all relevant Windows updates, which included the upgrade to Windows 8.1. I also checked Lenovo support for all driver updates that applied. Here is where I run into a problem. It seems that I have the most recent BIOS update (v2.04), but not the most recent VBIOS (NVIDIA GeForce GT650M Second VGA BIOS Update for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) - IdeaPad Y400, Y500). That said, when I try to install the new VBIOS, it doesn't take. A command window opens briefly and immediately closes, not allowing me to enter any commands, as the Lenovo instructions would have me do.... Then nothing happens. I've tried doing this numerous times with no success. I should also note that I keep getting pop up notifications in my task bar telling me Windows has disabled my GT650m, and/or "display driver has stopped responding and has recovered"... I'm at a loss. Any help or advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Here some additional info that may be relevant:

Device Manager showing only one display adapter- Intel HD Graphics 4000 missing:

    Display adapter properties:

Thank you for reading through all of this... and feel free to ask for any addtonal info....

This has been my problem with my Y500. You can see my thread that I started on this , but I dont mind if we can find the solution here. For me my Ultrabay 650M works with the unlocked vbios but eventually stop responding as it is with JuneBug. I am wondering if it is a bug in the bios?

  12. Mine didnt, but I knew that ahead of time, as I was buying a slightly cheaper version. Though I promptly found a 32GB SSD for like $40 on ebay I used for caching, saved myself some money.

It is for caching, it isnt for loading anything on for day to day use...

  13. Hey Everyone,

So this has happened to be a few times and I figured I would finally post about it to see if anyone knows a fix or maybe knows something I dont.

The VBIOS on my ultrabay 650M gets corrupted and goes into unknown device status, thereby rendering it unusable and dropping me to one GPU. This is after the card has worked for a month on the modded bios.

Each time it happens I have to flash the card back to the stock bios, reboot and reflash to the modded bios.

Note that 90% of the time I wasnt overclocking the gpus at all, and this still happened. I think there may be a bug or something in the modded bios, or maybe its something I am doing... any thoughts?

  14. So today I noticed SLI on my Y500 was not working. I am getting the yellow exclamtion on the ultrabay GPU. This sort of happened out of no where it seems. I tried downgrading drivers. I went from 335.23 to 332.21. That didnt fix it.

I took out the ultrabay GPU and put it back, still nothing.

I disabled and re-enabled in device manager. That took away the yellow exclamation and it says the device is working, but Nvidia CP still only reporting one GPU.

I am running the modded vBios on both, but I dont actually overclock the GPU's, except to benchmark, which I havent done in about a month. So I am not sure where or what is going on. Maybe it just died, I dont know. I guess I will have to try restoring to the stock vBios and see if that does it. If anyone has any other suggestions though I would love to hear them.

    EDIT!!!

Ok so I went back to stock vBios, and that fixed it... not sure why the modded vBios was causing problems. But I might try flashing again... maybe something got corrupted I have no idea. Very odd.

  15. Yes you can change out the processor. However it has to be supported by the motherboard chipset and firmware. I dont believe the Y500 supports the 4th gen Intel processors. Also heat wise, you do not want a desktop processor in there, the cooling cant handle it. Lastly I doubt you would see a big if any different in performance anyway, especially for gaming.
