1.

i did in fact add to the radiators. i added about 1/3 more. it was too iffy to solder the parts. copper heat pipes melting point is about the same as the solder. i opted for a custom thermal adhesive instead. i mixed it in a 2 parts thermal compound (antec nano diamond formula 7), to a 3 parts devcon 2 part clear (low viscosity ) epoxy ratio. adding the extra copper to the heatsinks required me to modify the whole motherboard tray, as i also was going to add 2 fan to directly cool the thicker heatsinks. i decided to cut out a "breather" hole for the ultrabay gpu. i will provide some temperature tests soon . i been really busy lately

    Wow this is impressive!!!

Can you make a new thread and explain step by step how to make this modd possible. Maybe someone can provide you some pics of the process if you don't made them.

I'll be greatly thankful because this is what every Y500 owner wants...

  2. I have the same laptop and I have also the same heat issues. I've bought the same laptop cooler because of the modding ability. The problem of the Y500 is the poor vent-construction. What I want to do is drill small holes in the bottom cover to let more air in. I have tested my Y500 carefully with and without the bottom cover, and with no laptop cooler under the laptop. I put 2 small boxes underneath the Y500.

    These were the results:

    Results with bottom cover:

    CPU 82C

    GPU 93C

    Results without bottom cover:

    CPU 73C

    GPU 77C

There is an other solution to transfer heat out but that's to risky for me. You can use washers to tighten the CPU and GPU to the heatsink. I called Lenovo to order a bottom cover but they will call me back. After that I will begin modding the bottom cover and the cooling pad.

  3. Somebody already did a similar thing, but instead of replacing fans, he added 2 (i think) more. Didn't make any difference.

@Zhadox that slowly kills the purpose of a "notebook". Why not buy a desktop?

Well... I'm using this one (Y500) as a desktop, it's to big to hang out with it on the sofa anyway. And I "must" spend my money on somthing... :D

  4. Yesterday I've tested my CPU and GPU with Crysis 3 running for 30 minutes. I've tested the Y500 with and without the backplate. And with the backplate on things where kooking inside especially the GPU. I'm using a Zalman laptop cooler but the cooleringfan has no results with the backplate on. I looked at where the coolingfan is mounted but the fan of the cooler and of fans of the Y500 are not facing each other. I will try to order a new backplate for modding and hopefully I can bring the temps down.

    Results with backplate:

    CPU 82C

    GPU 93C

    Results without backplate:

    CPU 73C

    GPU 77C

I posted this in an other thread.. It's good to see that the temps are drestically low with the lid off, but with a major downside.

  5. I'm going to repaste the CPU and GPU's, after that I plan to mod a Cooler Master Notepal U3.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997872&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=6146846&SID=1ktvlnhp5hldc

The three 80mm fans will be replaced by three 120mm. What I also want to do is placing one fan on each side (left and right) on the outtake. I want to make a push pull config out of it...

  6. I take it back, I've had problems since applying the update. My bluetooth turns itself off when the computer goes to sleep. Any fixes for that? I've poked around and haven't seen anything. It's very annoying to lose my mouse everytime the computer goes to sleep.

Here are some fixes you can try... :Banane37:

Disable Windows 8 fast boot or hybrid boot. Whatever you call it. Then bluetooth works fine.
no, i never put my computer to sleep or hibernate and this seems to happen pretty randomly. Like every few minutes. Could it be a defective card?

NVM I think i may have figured it out. i went into the device manager and in the bluetooth power management section i unchecked "allow this computer to turn off this device to save power"

Neither of those problems are caused by the BIOS. You can check if you disabled the Nvidia Control Panel service, otherwise you may need to reinstall the graphics driver. The Bluetooth issue is a Windows 8 problem and you can kind of solve it by turning off fast startup, but Bluetooth will still disappear every time you put the computer to sleep or hibernate.
    Thanks for your reply.

I don't know how to disable Nvidia Control Panel but could you please tell me how to enable this. I want to check if it's disabled or not.

Bluetooth problem is solved, I really appreciate it...

I hope you'll solve the bluetooth problem with one of the tips above... :Banane37:

  7. Don't use FurMark. SLI doesn't work in it and it will kill your GPU. Unigine Heaven is a much better program.

These are the ThrottleStop settings I use for maximum performance:

It will also produce the maximum heat. If it causes your CPU to overheat, which is likely if you haven't repasted, you can lower the maximum clock speed by setting the multiplier lower than Turbo, or checking Disable Turbo which will turn off Turbo Boost and prevent your CPU from exceeding 2.4 GHz.

You should repaste if you haven't done so already.

Which thermal paste did you use to get so low and what do you use to clean the surface. Should I repaste the Ultrabay GPU...

Thank you for all your help

Thanks for your help but i can't see the settings because the image is to small. And do you use more profiles in ThrottleStop if so please ad those to...

    Thanks a million

  10. I've figured out what stress tools to use but Furmark only stress one GPU the second doesn't kick in. I tried the tips on the web but no luck, it drives me mad...

PS I'm not using W8.1 and I have the latest NVIDIA driver 331.65

[TIPS] How to Enable SLI and CrossFire Support for OpenGL Applications | Geeks3D

The next step is to configure ThrottleStop and I read the OP of uncleweb but I'm realy lost. A few minutes ago I send him a PM and asked him to start a new thread for us Y500 users. If someone can help me out to configure ThrottleStop it will really be tremendous.

  11. Throttlestop has a profile system where you can store up to 4 sets of clock speeds & other CPU settings (like BD PROCHOT) as well as user configurable hotkeys to activate the profiles (I use Shift+Ctrl 1-4). So, for instance I've set the clock speeds to the following:

    Profile 1: 800mhz + Power saving settings

    Profile 2: 1.5ghz + Power saving settings

    Profile 3: 3ghz (turbo) constant

    Profile 4: 3.2ghz (turbo) constant

You can also have the program automatically choose a profile based on battery level, and even CPU/GPU temperature. For instance, When my CPU reaches 95C, throttlestop will drop to profile 1. When my GPU gets to 85C, it drops the CPU clock to profile 1. When my battery hits 10%, it drops to Profile 1 to give me a bit more battery time. Throttlestop can also trigger profiles based on whether you are on AC/Battery power. When I plug in my power cable, my laptop runs on profile 3. When I pull it, it drops to profile 2.

I've flased my bios and I'm very happy with it. Full credits to svl7 and jester_socom many thanks for the auto overclock mod. You both turned my Y500 in a real beauty. Before the flash I played Crysis 3 in a low resolution and low settings, now a can play it in 1080P with high settings. It's really awesome... :woot:

Now I want to learn more about TrottleStop. These settings are realy guenius, but before I begin I want to know more about it. Where can I find more info about TrottleStop. And which tests can I use to test out the temps and safety, so I can use it without worring about killing my rig. Also what kind of programs do you guys use ingame to determine temps...

  12. Maybe it's a weird question but is there enyone have experiance with building an external cooler from a metal suitcase. The plan is to stuf some fans in (the more, the better) and fit the whole Y500 inside. I want to connect a 27" screen so it's no problem if I can't use the screen of the Y500. At the in- and outtake I want to fit 2 fans, the whole space will be stuffed with foam so there only flow air in and out at the right places. And maybe just maybe I'm going to fit 2 more fans at the outside...

  13. Yes it's fine, it's exactly what you need to do if you want the BIOS mod.

Depends on how far you overclock of course. And yes ThrottleStop is needed to run the i7 at full power but just be aware that it kicks out a substantially higher amount of heat, possibly to the point of overheating the CPU.

Can you post benchmarks of the i7 at standard speed (without ThrottleStop) and at full power (with ThrottleStop), so I can decide what to do. I'm asking myself if it's worth it, because i think there's a little headroom. On the other side I'm thinking to build an external cooling of a metal cd briefcase...

  14. Update. Official BIOS V2.04 update and Ultrabay 650M/750M vBIOS update, which allow SLI to function properly in Windows 8.1, have been leaked. Take a look here: http://forum.techinferno.com/lenovo-ibm/4820-svl7-we-need-you-windows-8-1-a-3.html#post70391

Now all we need is for these files to receive the magical svl7 mod treatment and we're good to go. :Banane34:

Thats great news... I gues I'm going to wait with flashing, but I think I'm not brave enough to flash. I found the video though, the only thing that holds me back is that there is no video for the vBIOS for the ultra-bay GPU.

Can anyone help me with this? I'm realy afraid to brik my laptop, so a little help realy will be highly appreciated.

  15. How much FPS can I expect with a game like Crysis 3 in 1080P when both 650m GPU's overclocked? And is it necessary to use Throttlestop on the i7?

Can anyone tel me how to squeeze the maximum out my laptop. I think jester_socom's thread is exellent to auto overclock the GPU's. I'll greatly appreciate any advice here...

  16. After hours of reading the hole thread I'm ready to flash my Y500 SLI. When I bought my Y500 I thought there would be no issue with demanding games like Crysis 3 and Metro. When I saw how mutch I had to downgrade the settings I had to do something about that. And I was realy pleased to find this thread.

Before I begin I want to know in what order to flash and install a 7260ac card.

1 Do I first pull out the 2230 default card or turn off wifi in the bios. 2 flash bios and ultra-bay. And 3 install the new 7260ac card.

I also want to know what is going to happen if I turn the wifi on after flashing and leave the 2230 card in to install a 7260ac after a couple of days.
