  1. I don't think using this "liquid metal pad" is a good idea. It looks like it's designed for CPUs with heatshield, while mobile CPUs don't have it. Also, I've read it's a royal pain to remove it afterwards. Moreover I think modern high-quality thermal paste will perform better.

Yesterday after few hours of heavily modded Skyrim with ENBSeries (GPU load constant 99%) my max temps were 84°C on CPU, 79° on GPU. Y580 in signature with GPU overclocked to 1250/3000. I used a cooling pad, but as long as you have enough space under your laptop and your radiator is clean of dust it is not necessary to use it.

You should definitely repaste both GPU and CPU. Clean the fan and radiator while you're at it.

If you don't move around your laptop too much, get a cooling pad and use the laptop without the bottom cover. It does help quite a bit.

  2. I carry it (Y580) each day to work and use it to play games at home at my desk, sitting on the sofa in living room, and sometimes play a bit of Skyrim in bed before going to sleep... It's not THAT big. Well, I used to have Dell XPS M2010, so every notebook looks small to me now ;)

Getting back to the topic... I change energy settings depending on what I do. Some games work well without Turbo Boost, without OCing GPU, or even without Nvidia GPU. Lower CPU frequency works fine with most games.

  3. I'm going to repaste the CPU and GPU's, after that I plan to mod a Cooler Master Notepal U3.

    Cooler Master Notepal U3 Laptop / Notebook Cooling Pad, Up to 19" (3 x 80mm Configurable Fans) - Newegg.com

The three 80mm fans will be replaced by three 120mm. What I also want to do is placing one fan on each side (left and right) on the outtake. I want to make a push pull config out of it...

Somebody already did a similar thing, but instead of replacing fans, he added 2 (i think) more. Didn't make any difference.

@Zhadox that slowly kills the purpose of a "notebook". Why not buy a desktop?

  4. I'm sure you can route sound to SPDIF without setting it as default. Not sure what you mean by the light "activating". In my Y580 the laser diode is always on (there's red light coming out of the port). It's handy, as it helps to plug headphones jack in the dark :D

    What OS you have?

  5. Note, that fan kicking in earlier, or running constantly at 100% will not help with overheating problem. It might overheat slower, but that's it. Also, GPU temperatures should not be allowed to drop rapidly, as rapid changes in temperature are the reason for cold solder to break.

  6. Well, they usually ARE different drives to be exact. Because the mSATA is physically smaller they use higher density chips and smaller memory controllers (less channels per chip, or narrower bus... don't remember exactly). I can't find my source now, but I'll post it here as soon as I do.

My question is what was the purpose of your post? Because all I can see is that you are only trying to prove me wrong (which in this case you can't) and do not answer the OPs question thus bringing no value to the discussion. Pointless in other words. Next time if you want to "enlighten" someone just send them a private message.

  7. Haha I thought I'm the only one with this problem! There are two solutions I know of, but unfortunately neither is very good.

    1. You can create a VBA script and assign a keyboard shortcut to execute it, but first you'd have to write one, have it written for you, or find one somewhere.

    2. You can override the default sound output in most players, but then it would mean using different players in different situations (or have separate profiles and switch between them).

  8. Well it's not "Samsung 840 Pro", but "PM841" then. Mondeo and Jaguar X-type are based on the same platform, so is it the same car?

Moreover, it's not available in retail, so what's the point of all that? Give me a break...

Anyway, OP looks for something cheap, right?

  9. If I remember correctly Samsung 840 Pro does not come in mSATA form.

One of the most popular ways is to put your OS and some programs (depending on what you buy not everything might fit) on the SSD and the rest on your HDD.

Although 64GB would be enough for OS I'd recommend 128GB. I have been using Crucial M4 128GB mSATA for the last ~4 months and I have on it my OS (Win7), all programs and 1 game (SC2), and I still have 70GB of free space.

Just look around on the internet. Compare benchmarks, read reviews and user comments.

  10. i will agree the more ram the better...that's what I always say.

Well you can't say it's true in general just because it might be true for you. Most people won't benefit from 16GB of RAM. For average Joe it would be better to buy a good SSD instead.

  11. The paste must have been very bad on octiceps' laptop, because it's rather rare to see such a temperature drop only after repasting.

3000MHz on memory is only achievable with 2,5GHz GDDR5 memory, which 650m in Y500 doesn't have, and in SLI setup doesn't need :)

I do not have any comparison, but I did some reading before I swapped my i5 for the one in my signature, and bough Noctua NT-H1. 42°C under load, 86°C highest recorded, but usually stays right under 80°C when gaming.

  12. 3630qm and 3632qm have different tubro boost stepping:

    - 3630qm has 8/8/9/10 with a base of 2,4GHz, which translates to 3,2GHz with 4 cores and 3,4GHz with 1 core active

    - 3632qm has 7/7/9/10 with a base of 2,2GHz, which translates to 2,9GHz with 4 cores and 3,2GHz with 1 core active

  13. If I remember correctly the thermal pads on Y580 where only over other components like memory and some other parts that might get hot. There was only thermal paste over my CPU and GPU.

Those thermal pads were put there with some purpose, so unless you know a reason to remove them you should not! The same with this piece of plastic over MB.

Assuming your laptop doesn't actually overheat I think you should leave it be. Just monitor the temps and in case it gets worse-> then repaste.

  14. One thing to consider: Many, if not the most of those laptop coolers have 2 pointy, collapsible legs to lift the cooling pad above the desk.

What that means is that some of them are not suitable to use on your lap. I spent some time trying to find one that had good reviews, price, and one I could use on a desk, on lap (it is a LAPtop, right?), and in bed. Don't forget that if that is also important factor to you.
