  1. According to someone else in the forums, you can use Intel XTU to lower the voltage of your CPU which will let it run cooler. The only downside of lowering the voltage too much is instability but no damage will be done.

  2. If you want to lower temperatures, you have to repaste first of all.

The next part is strongly unadvised, unless you know what you doing. :)

You shoud change some gap-pads, since in my y510p,the gap pad next to cpu, over coils of vrm area, is pushing heastsink away. ( 0.5mm is ok)

Cpu springs are fine, however, the gpu spring have to be modded. internal gpu has 3 bolts, 2 of them is fine, but i inserted a 0.5mm spacer under them, 3rd one is changed to stronger one.

Ultrabay gpu heatsink is modded too, almost hardmounted, spacer with rubber spacer under it.

Ultrabay is still overhating under full load, but for example with BL2 it is at max 80, internal 75 max, and it is with 1230/1425, cpu at 3,4 4core with throttlestop, undervolted by 95mv.

Not sure if I'm reading this right, but did you undervolt your CPU and how did you do it?

  3. I just got my laptop back from sending it in for a repair under warranty. It had the modded bios and the sticker covering one of the screws was scratched off, but everything went smoothly and nothing happened to the warranty. The rep (in regards to warranty) said that the laptop is yours and you can do whatever you want to it as long as you are not responsible for whatever the problem is.

  4. Yeah the vram and other stuff on the motherboard have thermal pads on them. I did try taking them off to see if that was the case but even with them completely off, there is still the gap (as well as gaps between the heatsink and tthe vram

  5. Thanks for the suggestions.

I just bought some copper shim from amazon. Not quite sure how thick I needed so I just estimated but it will take a couple of weeks to arrive..grr.

Other ideas that I came up with: (let me know what you think)

+Put a wad of electric tape/rubber above the heatsink on the GPU so that when the laptop is reassembled, the base of the laptop will be pushing on the wad which will push the heatsink more onto the GPU.

+Put a thermal pad on the GPU.

  6. So one thing that has puzzled me in my repasting adventures is why putting more thermal paste between the GPU and heatsink lead to better temperatures (but still high 80s low 90s in gaming and throttling at 97C for really heavy games) . I also noticed that when I took the heatsink+fan off the GPU, there would be a lot of paste between them and it didn;t look like it was squished out very well which could possibly mean that the GPU wasn't really touching the heatsink.

I wiped off the paste, and put the heatsink back on without paste, and I could see a thin gap of air between the GPU and heatsink. I'm guessing my temperatures would be a lot better if the GPU was actually touching the heatsink, so does any one have any solution to this. ?

  7. 1) you dont NEED the bios mod. Only real advantage is if you are switching graphics cards or need to access an advanced bios menu which pretty much no one does.

    2) What kind of tutorials are you talking about? I'm not quite sure what you're asking here. The biggest difference between "win8 laptops" is that some are touch screen which can be useful for win8. The y400 isnt touchscreen. Pretty much most modern day laptops can use Win8.

    3) 1080p screen does not exist. You can try finding a 3rd party 14'' 1080p screen, but it may not be compatible and may not fit.

    4) Its hard to say. It will help a little, but I havent really seen the advantage of a greater size for the mSATA cache. I have a 16gb msata card and used it as a cache then later partitioned it so I could put some programs on it so that there was now only like 5-6GB cache. Didnt notice a difference between the 16 and 5gb cache in terms of opening file speeds.

  8. I've repasted a couple of times and I'm still not quite sure how much to use. It seems like temps get better the more you paste you add.

Also, Idk what else to do but when I run Msi kombustor / Furmark burn-in tests, my GPU will start throttling at around 95-97C after about 3 min. However when I'm just gaming, GPU temps stay around 70-80C

  9. WARNING: I do not recommend doing what I do. I don't think it's worth it. I am merely posting this for educational purposes....right

So, I wanted to remove the dust filter mesh that is on the vent as it can block airflow. (Blow on your fingers while keeping them like 1cm apart and use your other hand to see how much air can get through..not much right?)

I did this "mod" to my old XPS 15 and you could feel significantly more air blowing through the vents.

    Here's what I did:

    1) Remove the bottom cover of the laptop. You can see other y500 disassembly threads. Pretty simple: take out battery, take out optical drive, unscrew 9 screws, CAREFULLY pry off back, etc

    2) To remove the vent, there are these metal tabs which can be bent. I used a very fine/thin flathead screwdriver to pry the tabs. NOTE: If you feel like doing this, don't touch the tabs. Skip to step #4.

The vent part is pretty much all plastic except for the tabs, so you will scratch it up. Metal screw driver versus plastic...

    post-3318-1449499580202_thumb.jpg

3The mesh itself is actually made from some sort of cloth. I basically used the flathead screw driver to scratch off the mesh. I didn't take off the whole mesh. Just the part that was covering the fan. Then just put the vent back onto the back cover and push down on the metal tabs to lock it in.

    post-3318-14494995802383_thumb.jpg

    4) Basically steps 2 and 3 was a mistake. It would have been much easier and cleaner to just scrape off the mesh with the vent still on the back part.

    post-3318-144949958027_thumb.jpg

    5) You can see that it's not very pretty...I would have just gone with step 4 and scrape using the plastic border area as a guide.

    post-3318-14494995803038_thumb.jpg

For reference: here is what the back would look like if you just took the vent out all together (the back part is obviously missing the optical drive and isnt attached to the laptop)

    post-3318-14494995803379_thumb.jpg

And here is a close up on the mesh itself. It is rather nice:

    post-3318-14494995803693_thumb.jpg

And the part you all are waiting for...temps!

I ran the TS Bench on ThrottleStop where it seems to calculate..something (prime numbers?). 1024M on 8 threads as well as 32M on 1 Thread.

BEFORE the "mod": Temps for the CPU were 89-90 Celsius.

AFTER the "mod", and running 1024M several times: Temps for CPU were 86-87 Celsius.

So yeah, it helps a little bit, but I wouldnt recommend it. Here's why:

    a) Its not a very easy mod. You could easily break/snap/scratch something.

    B) It's not really good looking. Sure you can do a better/cleaner scraping job, but I think it looks sortof better with the mesh on.

    c) Checking the thermal config in the bios I found that the "high" fan speed doesnt kick in until 100 C. So overheating isn't really a problem for me to begin with. The mod saved 2-3 degrees for me. I think a thermal paste job would do a better job.

    d) More dust will probably get into the fan (though I have compressed air and clean it out every few months).

  10. I am thinking of removing the dust filter/mesh film that covers the vent to improve airflow. I did it to my old XPS 15 a couple years ago and air flow significantly increased. I didnt do a comparison on temperatures, but people in another thread claimed that it decreased temps alot. The dust buildup wasn't significantly greater than with the filter on and I have a few cans of compressed air in stock and I would clean it out every few months

I'm still trying to figure out how to remove the filter. The edges of it seem to be under some metal, but i recently read that the metal is bendable. I will have to give it a try tonight.

  11. Hi I have a few questions about this bios mod. I'm reading through the thread now but it's taking a while ( I have the y500 with a single GT 750m).

    1) Does the 750m have kepler boost? ( I know it was disabled for the 650m cards)

    2) How do you edit the video card bios? (I used to modify older video card bioses and nibitor doesnt seem to recognize my card)

2.5) In the first post, what does "modified vbios for higher overclocking". Is that an overvolt mod? Is there a undervolted 750m bios mod?

    3) I know its not in the mod but is it possible to add CPU / RAM overclocking? I remember reading another thread where a guy claimed he overclocked his cpu.

    thanks

  12. So burnt out on "modern warfare" series... I'm sad to see this happen to Battlefield. Battlefield used to be one unique conflict per title, WWII -> Vietnam -> Modern era -> Future era...

Now it's just modern era after modern era. Battlefield 2, 3, 4, Bad Company, Bad Company 2, it's just too much. They need to go back into the future or do a war they haven't done yet like the Korean War.

Totally agree. I was like 90% sure they were going to release BF 2143 first since there were a few easter eggs regarding the 2142 game in BF3.

  13. Woah didnt realize PS2 was coming out on PS4. I was gonna get back into the game once my new laptop arrives but I'm starting to have doubts whether I can run the game smoothly in massive battles ( i7-3630qm + 750m GT)

  14. Yeah haha, I just got an email saying my laptop was shipped (~10 hrs after requesting for cancellation). Oh well. At least I'll have something to play with since the other one is coming in on monday. I can already see my CC bill with 2 laptop purchases on it -_-.

Edit: wow its coming on Thursday and ordered on monday.....impressive lenovo

  15. I bought a y500 (650m and 1tb HDD) yesterday for $600 on the outlet site and then saw a better one (750m and 1tb + 16gb ssd) for $611 so got that one instead. I talked to a rep and asked them to cancel my previous order but they said that it may be too late. Since I ordered it yesterday morning, what are the chances that it will actually cancel without getting shipped? And if it does get shipped, is it really easy to return and get a refund? (I know i should get a free return with no extra costs but I've heard someone say they waited months to get a refund).

Whee so excited. I'm coming from a XPS 15 L501x--hopefully this new laptop will be much better
