You can undervolt using Intel's extreme tuning utility (Intel XTU) on either the factory bios or the tweaked bios. It is the safest/best option.

is that cable for the FHD y510p?

The screen i was trying to use was the 1080 screen that came with the y500. Not sure what the model # is but it should be one of the two you listed according to the Lenovo y500 hardware manual.

In addition to that, I tried another 1080p screen. Don't rmember the model number but it was from AUO and came with the XPS 15 (L501x). Instead of just backlight turning on, I got a gray screen and possibly could see stuff on teh screen but I can't remember. But I'm sure its a ribbon cable issue.

Don't think you can use the y500 cable. I tried a LCD cable from a 1080p y500 and got nothing, not even a blacklight. (also i'm on the same track as you but haven't found a solution yet. next i think i would try a y510p 1080p cable but its a little expensive on ebay right now.

^^ interesting method. I've heard stories of people tilting their laptops causing unexplained decreases/increases in temperatures depending on how they tilt the computer. I think the only damage you can get is if you have a hard disk because of how it spins so fast, its most stable/safe when its flat versus vertical.

To op, removin the bottom cover is pretty much all you need to do. I usually do a few squirts of compressed air into the side vent (blowing into comptuer) and then from the bottom with the bottom case removed.

I have a question about this BIOS mod. As far as I understand this mod opens some advanced menus, and as I saw it on the video in post #1 there is a possibility of changing the cooling characteristics of the laptop. So with this mod, can I have cooler temperatures?

Depends on what you're looking for. The advanced menus do have some thermal configuration like specific temperatures when to activate fans but I think someone reported that changing those values don't make a difference. Other stuff you can do is undervolt using nvidia inspector/intel XTU (i would stay away from the voltage/OC settings in the bios). Another useful thing with the bios mod I've found is disabling hyperthreading has allowed me to undervolt further than before, reducing temps even more. Whether or not you need HT is up to you, I just found that my games dont benefit or get hindered from HT.

Only downside of undervolting is less stability, meaning there's a higher chance for crashes while gaming. At 1.0v it should be fine. I personally have mine set to 0.975v (-125mv undervolt) without any issues yet. Intel XTU also allows you to undervolt the intel graphics card. Not sure if it really makes a diffeerence but I have mine at -100mv.

After sitting on the fence between replacing my Y410p or upgrading it, I've finally committed to doing some upgrades and I was very happy to find this tutorial on opening up the stock BIOS restrictions - mostly the whitelist. I'm totally new to BIOS modification but I'm not computer illiterate and I can follow instructions correctly so being able to use the Intel 7260 I just ordered shouldn't be too hard. Aside from that I was just going to swap the HDD for an SSD.

I'm not planning on getting a second GPU; though I'd like to, I can't justify the cost for the amount of time I actually get to spend gaming anymore. What other upgrades would you experts recommend to a novice that this BIOS mod allows me to do? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can try undervolting your GPU using nvidia inspector but if you don't game much, it probably won't affect you very much.

Other than that , I wouldn't toy around with Bios settings.

I think you're supposed to drag the bios file onto the program after you open the program. And you didnt notice any new files in the same folder as your backup bios?

Did you open the Biosfixer program first and then drag the bios backup bin file onto it?

Tried the bios. Everything is working fine. Was able to safely undervolt to -125mv (using nvidia inspector) which lead to a nice 5-10C drop in GPU temps. Thanks!

I would stay away from that Menu and use intel XTU...someone in another thread already messed up his computer by having unstable settings in the overclocking menu. Intel xtu may let you get higher (i was able to get my i7 to 3.5ghz from 3.4 ghz but even with that, the temps were getting too high).

I'd go with 2x4gb. I dont think you'll *need* 12gb of ram. not for another couple years at least.

Does anyone know what kind of screens are compatible? (upgrading from 720p). Or if a different lcd ribbon cable is needed. I tried to replace the 720p screen with a 1080p screen from an old y500 and nothing showed up. Though, it's always possible that the 1080p screen i have is broken or something.

You should be able to use the drivers from intel. I had this error before, but don't really remember how I fixed it.

Try re-downloading the driver. Uninstall the current intel graphics driver. Uninstall the nvidia driver. Then reinstall the intel one.

Optimized is supposed to drain til 60%. I think it could be a hardware issue, but hopefully replacing the motherboard fixed it.

For the second problem, I think I had that issue with my y510p when I tried using windows 8.1. I think it has to do with the lenovo power management software. Try finding a newer version? I had no luck fixing it. My power scheme was messed up or something. When gaming, my FPS would get halfved if I used the high performance power scheme, and it would go back to normal if I switched to balanced.

Also on windows 8.1, in task manager, there was something called system interrupts taking up 5-10% CPU even on idle. This happened even after a reformat.

Anyways, i switched back to windows 8.0 and everythings fine with my machine now.

Try going into bios and disabling secure boot. If that doesnt work, Try changing from uefi to legacy.

I am pretty sure y410p has optimus (my y510p has optimus). I believe adding a second video card will disable optimus.

My 750m runs at 1.1250v on load. Undervolting would be nice though. (I'd like to try 0.95v for lower temps)

You don't need to take the laptop apart. You can remove the bezel (the border around the screen facing you right?) There is a youtube video I followed.

you pretty much just pry it off. The top part of the hinges will also pop off with it. Also, the left and ride side of the bezel may have sticky tape underneath it.

I know it sounds silly but I still don't think youre running it in admin mode. I would try disabling UAC .

Disabling User Account Control in Windows 8 - Yash's Blog - Site Home - MSDN Blogs make sure you do registry edit. Reboot and retry. After you're done with all this, you can re-enable UAC again.

Run the backup.bat file. You will need to have admin cmd prompt for it to work. The backup.bat file will produce your backup bios file for you. Then download the Y510p-Y410p_[v2.04][v2.07]_BiosFixer_(Whitelist only).zip file and run the .exe and drop your backup in there and it will produce the new modified bios.

Take your modified bios file, rename it to something easy to type if you want. Then (to make things easier to understand), make a new folder on your c:\ drive called bios and copy the modified bios and fptw64.exe into it. Then open a admin cmd prompt and type

"cd c:\bios" <press enter>

"fptw64 -f biosmod.bin -bios" <press enter and wait and then reboot>

How you do downgrade to 2.07?

check your temperatures to make sure there is no overheating

make sure you are running in high performance mode for your power plan.
