  1. Well I have been looking into it. I have enabled core parking. Which allowed the system to run cooler. But not much. Using this I am able to achieve a higher turbo boost. Maybe 200mhz higher.

It looks like turbo boost is still present on clean Windows 8 image. I did notice this kind of throttling is not present with a i5 installed. With the i5 turbo boost would always work.

I dont know if people noticed the voltage reduction around 60-65c with stock vbios. I assume that is the part where the turbo boost is also turned off.

I remember I found it on my 3632qm few days ago but I did a reinstall and now it's not working anymore. I am still trying to figure out what it was

  2. Hi

Have any one else of you Y510p owners seen any problems with the laptop not turbo boosting?

I experience similar problems and am a bit stuck right now. Has anyone looked into it? The ThrottleStop author seems to imply that this is by design, what do you guys and gals think?

I don't have access to my laptop right now, but I'll check later what the Intel XTU software can do.

You should not use Throttlestop. This is done by design to prevent damage done by heat.

They might remove your warranty if discovered. Because this is similar to overclocking and running past manufacturer's specifications.

Most here have been doing it since the beginning. But I rather have some sweet cool gaming around 70-80c instead of 100c

  3. I am going to try something. Since I have no throttling with my i7 when I am playing games I am suspecting this is a tweak made by Lenovo in Windows.

I have manually set Performance Boost Mode to Enabled and then my turbo is working aggressively.

When I set that setting to Efficient Optimized my turbo would only work on 1-2 cores. If load is spread on more cores turbo would be disabled. That is what you guys have been experiencing.

But you can unlock this setting in the registry.

Setting this to Disabled would disable turbo boost entirely for that power plan.

    Easy right :) ?

  4. There is no point upgrading your CPU. I don't notice any difference even going from i5 to i7 aside in ArmA 2 & 3 and PCSX2.

And PlanetSide 2 also runs fine on a i5 here.

Save your money to buy a new laptop. Really, save yourself the trouble. I won't upgrade my CPU ever again.

    • Thumbs Up 1
  5. Yes you are paranoid.

There will be no tangible difference in temperature from those two upgrades. Power consumption will drop slightly. The SSD will decrease system noise and make a huge difference in responsiveness. If you have the money for an SSD there's no reason not to get one.

according tot the thermal pictures, the tester noticed a 5C difference in the RAM area. Does seem worth trying. I might test myself and remove 1 stick to see if that helps.

  6. Nice, that's pretty awesome. With my 650M SLI my highest is P5228, currently sitting at #3 on the list for 650M systems. Clocks were 1260/2250 @ 1.137 V. Not practical for everyday usage because the GPU's will get up to 97-98 C and start throttling, so I use it just for benching. At my everday clocks of 1120/2250 temperatures are 20 C lower. It's crazy how much extra heat is generated when you bump up the voltage.

I am gaming with my cpu at 60-75C now and GPUs in the 60ies.

    I really hate the summer.

  7. Would I be paranoid thinking this would help in my Y500 reducing temperatures?

Technology Primer: Low Voltage RAM - Puget Custom Computers

    I currently have 1.5v 1600mhz cl11 modules

In the link above there is a comparison in a desktop system for 1.25v/1.35v/1.5v

I do notice a slight difference. Maybe this will have a better effect in a notebook? I was also thinking of upgrading to a SSD because it consumes 0.05W compared to 5W peak of a HDD.

  8. dunno why but it idle around 55-60 , max temp when i play game is around 74-79 and my GPU is MIN 55 and reach 75? Should I worry and why is my idling so high? My desktop never idle this high and should I get a cooling pad? Is this normal , just got the laptop today.
  9. Hi everybody could you tell me how much of a performance improvement the haswell update of the y500 brings. I have gotten my y500 recently and I was wondering if it is worth it to send it back to lenovo to trade for the new y510p. I was also wondering if I could upgrade the cpu on the y500 because the game I play only uses a single core and it seems to struggle sometimes and I wanted to know if I could get a faster cpu or overclock a little bit. Thanks

You simply don't send your Y500 back unless you want the company to go bankrupt. Anyone with a little decency knows that :D

Haswell is only 7% faster. So the difference is not worth it anyways.

You can always force turbo boost while gaming using throttlestop. But I honestly refuse to do this because you skyrocket the temps.

  10. I have been gaming a lot since it is summer and I noticed that sometimes the framerate would randomly drop while playing. I then ran the game in windowed mode to try and diagnose the problem and I came to the conclusion that it was just getting too hot. I was looking for some type of fan control and I found the dust removal feature in the control panel. I noticed that it made the fans go faster than they ever would while gaming. So I want to know if there is a way to make them go this fast all the time. Thanks

    Ambient temp 80F or 26.6C

    (its hot in the summer)

    Not possible.

Turn of turbo boost using the unlocked BIOS or in windows power management settings by setting max processor state to 100%

My cpu is max 80C without turbo

  11. I can't believe you complain about performance in DOTA 2 of all games with the Y500, especially considering how high you overclock. The metal above the left side vent does get extremely hot under load but fortunately it has never been a problem for me as my hand never wanders there. You could probably keep the GPU at stock and turn off ThrottleStop, which would solve the heat issue, and still get well over 60 FPS in DOTA 2. Also many large mSATA SSD's are identical in price and performance to their 2.5" counterparts (e.g. Plextor M5M, Crucial M4 & M500).

But to each their own I guess. Enjoy that briefcase, er I mean laptop, and don't hurt yourself when carrying it around. ;)

I totally agree there. I recently forced throttlestop as well booming to 100C even with a 3632QM. With Lenovo's power management of the turbo boost I barely reach 70-80C on the CPU leaving a big gap to overclock.

But I noticed the GPU is always very close or identical to CPU temp, which makes me really not want to force turbo when overclocking the GPU. For my Planetside 2 and other CPU games work fine without turbo at 2.2ghz base clock

  12. Nice work svl7!

So is the addition of software voltage control the only difference between the 2.04 mod and previous versions, or are there other changes? How would someone with SLI unlock voltage control on the second GPU?

Now I'm just waiting for some overzealous individual turn the voltage slider to maximum and blow up their laptop LOL. As our favorite web-slinger used to say, with great power comes great responsibility. :)

Also, for those who've already flashed, did you upgrade to 2.04 directly from 2.02 modded or did you have to flash back to 2.02 official first using either your backup or the leaked InsydeFlash? Did upgrading to 2.04 also update the EC version to 2.04, or is it still at 2.02? Is there any harm to having mismatched BIOS version and EC version?

You can extract the VBIOS from the BIOS using Phoenix Tool. The VBIOS is 152-159KB in size.

Flash the extracted VBIOS ;) Works flawlessly for me :)

If you want I can just upload them for you.

  13. I read it is a bug with 802.11n driver related.

If you disable n-mode it works.

802.11a was only for 2.4ghz so I doubt disabling 802.11a would change anything.

opticeps thanks. I will try that. I think it was at certain intervals.

I will try disabling background scan. But the driver only allowed to change it to lowest. I will post back.
