  1. @Nando and Khenglish, Thanks for the quick responses although it wasnt the news i was hoping for. Right now i wouldnt get anything significant for the Vaio as its in pretty poos shape what with the head phones jack broke, 2 of the usb port pins have been pulled out somehow, a key is missing as well as various other things including record breaking over heating at times when doing anything with the graphics. I also cant justify the funds right now on spending £300 for a new system aswell as like £180 more for the egpu just to get an average return on graphics. Also, i looked into Fermi cards before but i couldnt really find any so either its something that isnt common in the Uk, its called something else here or its not really something thats specifically advertised as its an architecture thats just associated with cards over a certain age? Could you recommend a few cards that would best suit my needs if i were to try out the egpu on the vaio with the prospect of maybe upgrading my system if its crap? Khenglish, when you say a significant hit do you mean that in a positive or negative way? If its negative what are you basing that statement compared to x2.1 vs x1.1? Also, i do currently have an express card slot on the side of the laptop that is currently unused if thats what your referring to? I will check with Aida64 and see what it has to say. Will it tell me if there are other ports there that have been disabled by the bios and if so im guessing they can be reactivated? That actually leads me on to my next question: I have ports 1, 2, 3 and 6 showing now however i may be mistaken but i could swear before i reformatted the system yesterday that there were different port active which is part of the reason i was thinking that shuffling the current ports the devices are paired to wasn't a permanent thing and they can be swapped around, but even if i am mistaken, what happened to ports 4, 5, 7 and 8? Im asuming there is a 7 and 8 from reading the OP post for this thread which lists the pm55 as having 8 ports potentially. I guess im just having a hard time understanding why there would be a 6 without at least 4 and 5.
  2. Hi. Ive been reading this thread aswell as the enormous one over on the other forum where this started. I have absolutely fried my brain to the point where i have went from been pretty confident i had a grasp on it all to now not knowing a thing. Firstly, i think im just tired as ive spent all day reading through everything and its all the 2.1 1.2 x1 x2.0 pe4h 1.x 2.x 2.1's that have completely messed my brain around so i have resorted to asking for clarification on whats what. 1) Is a 1.x set up using 1 pcie port for the egpu and 2.x is using 2 ports or is 1.x a pcie 1.0 laptop and 2.x a pcie 2.0 system? 2) Assuming the former is true in 1) is a 1.1 set up 1 pcie slot one a 1.0 pci system and a 1.2 is 1 pcie slot on a 2.0 system or.. 3) Assuming the latter is true is a 1.1 setup a pcie 1.0 system using 1 port, a 1.2 setup a pcie 1.0 system using 2 ports and the same going for 2.x? 4) i also see x1 and x2 being spoken about for intance here DIY eGPU experiences - Page 46 Is that just another way of saying 1.x and 2.x or is x1 and x2 something different? im assuming x2 1.0 is the same as saying 1.2? Im not a complete idiot ive just managed to go round in circles of thinking i understand then changing my mind after reading what seems like contradictory posts from people using terminology. What i have managed so far is to open up a large memory doing a DSDT override on my Sony Vaio because of its 3.5gb TOLUD which took the best part of yesterday to correct the 166 errors when i tried to compile it but thats it done now. The reason for my questions are that i want to know if its even possible for me to get a decent set up of egpu on the system i have. I originally thought i would be able to use 2 ports since i have 1, 2, 3 and 6 however i only have one free. To start with i didnt think this wold be a problem as my first few reads of the OP on here and the other forum lead me to believe that you can switch the location of the already in use ports but like i mentioned above, reading other posts where people were told that they were not able to do this in a similar situation to me then im not so sure. I didnt just want to come on here and ask straight up what to buy and if its possible etc because i like to understand exactly whats going on when im doing things like this. If someone could perhaps answer if it is indeed possible for me to use the ports 1 and 2 i have open and if so how do i go about making a 2 port set up as i can only find reading on how to use one port but hear everyone talking about 2 port set ups just not any direction of where to go to read on how to do it or will the system just do it automatically if its available? Also, im not overly bother about not having wifi while using the egpu so if needed/possible i can disable it so long as its decently straight forward to switch it back on when i need to. If possible id like to relocate the bus that the wifi uses and completely disable the ethernet controller and SD/MMC which im assuming is the memory card readers in the front of the laptop. Sorry for all the questions.
