The dell supply should be more than adequate.

It's mainly for powering cards that get their power exclusively from the PCIe slot, like low power cards without 6P or 8P power inputs. If you use the barrel jack then there will not be any power present on the 6P output connector. Another thing I noticed, at least on my v8.4d, is that the USB port only has power when using the barrel jack. If I move the switch to "ATX" and use the 8P power input, then there is no power on the USB port.
