  1. I decided to run BF3 and Bioshock Infinite with a bit better ventilation for the bottom of the laptop, raising the rear about an inch and a half off the table. Saw a drastic improvement in temperatures and no more GPU throttling! Seems that my 660 does not like about 90 C. Temps were in the lower 80's for this test, seemed to run fine. Just need to get a laptop cooler to help out.

  2. Well, you should be concerned about the temps, as they alone can cause the throttling problem. That is also extraordinarily warm for a graphics card. It's bad for the hardware as well as a hindrance to performance. GPUs tend to be a little more fragile than an Intel CPU when it comes to temps. You may want to consider applying a high quality thermal paste, such as IC Diamond and using a utility like HWiNFO64 to force the fans to run full speed under load. If the air intake is on the bottom, simply elevating the back of the laptop may be very beneficial to bring the temps down.

I was thinking the same thing about the thermal paste, looks like I have to get my hands dirty! I did try elevating the back of the laptop, that seemed to help a bit. I will see how the temps are when I get the fans to go full speed, see if that helps. Thanks for the ideas.

  3. I have encountered a problem with the GPU clock staying at 1000mhz. While playing BF3, for some reason the clock does not want to go above 924 mhz, dipping low and returning up to that point, all indicated on Afterburner. Would their be a way to lock it at 1000mhz?

This shows the fluctuating core clock, the mem stays put. Could it be somehow linked to the temperature?

  4. Hey svl7, I'm running 8.01 and willing to do a favor. The only problem is I have yet to get your BIOS to work. I am getting stuck at the "create backup" part. Whenever I run the backup.bat file, a command prompt window flashes and that's it... I really would like to get this BIOS working but alas, I am a college student with finals coming up and can only tinker on my laptop for so long.

  5. Got this game a few weeks ago, really enjoyed the graphic upgrade from Blood Money. Obviously playing Hitman games, I try to be as stealthy as possible, going about the map to find ways around guards/obstacles. I let my buddy try his hand at it, he had never played or seen a Hitman game. Needless to say, he starts running through the map like it was CoD, shooting everything that moves :) I was laughing pretty hard at the end, and he still does not understand why you can't just "blow everyone away"!

  6. I am still using my Microsoft Sidewinder X5 that I purchased back in 2007, this thing has yet to fail me and has always been a reliable input when gaming. I liked the option to change the weight of the mouse. I paired this with a Razer eXactmat, seems to be a good combo for me!

  7. As an avid movie enthusiast, I prefer a glossy screen for the colors and detail that it gives. Yes, a matte will forever be better in high sunlight applications, but the pros to a gloss screen outweigh the cons in my particular situation. I have my laptop connected to a 32inch monitor which has a semi-matte screen anyways for daytime use, so the best of both worlds!

  8. Stock WiFi card in my Y580 has been working flawlessly, have one with the newer 8.XX BIOS versions. Looking forward to flashing the faster 660m BIOS and eventually upgrading my Wifi card. Sometimes I think that these issues with computers are in the hardware itself, faulty computers and whatnot. I have been fortunate enough to be problem free!

  9. Went to see Olympus has Fallen, if you have ever been to DC you will laugh at the set they used for the White House, especially how small the front lawn is. That being said, it was a pretty decent action/thriller, Gerard Butler was well cast as the lead actor. Looking forward to Oblivion and After Earth!

  10. New here to the forum, found some really good answers and good group of people while lurking on the site and finally decided to join. Been in the PC building scene since 2006, did some fun water cooled builds then joined the Marines in 2009. Been on the laptop train ever since due to mobility, now back in college and using a nice Lenovo Y580. This place has some interestingly modded BIOS that I would like to try, just have to post enough to get the download to work! Looking forward to contributing to the forum!
