I just got my Akitio Thunder2 and I'm trying to test it on my G46vw with Thunderbolt using a GTX 760 and Corsair CX750M power supply. Basically, the same setup as here except with a 760 instead of 780 Ti (and of course G46 instead of Mac Mini). Just as he does, I have the enclosure powered with it's PSU, and the GPU powered with the 6+8 pins from the ATX PSU. I'm on Windows 8.1, but cannot get it to recognize the card at all, after trying every possible order of plugging in, turning on PSUs, restarting etc. Should I have to do anything in the BIOS or drivers before you could get the device recognized in Windows?
It sounds like I will need a powered riser, which I have on order, but entzoe was able to make a 780 Ti work without a riser. I'm probably missing something, since I'm new to all of this. Any thoughts on where I go from here?
Does this model laptop have only the igpu? If not, the dgpu needs to be disabled before loading windows with setup 1.x.

I have the PSU RM 650 using a powered molex.
I didn't tried Windows, only OS X.
PSU is definitely sufficient. Check your PM.
-
What is your PSU model? Using powered molex?
Are you only getting black screen on OSX, or Windows as well?

I just realised that my other PSU is sitting in here: my VS650. I plugged that in, and guess what? It still crashes under Valley. It has a maximum of 600W on its 12V rail, so it has more than enough power for it
I can narrow it down to just three things:
1. There's an issue with the SEL supplying power through its PCIe slot
2. The SEL doesn't like Factory OC versions of graphics cards (reference stock-clocked cards may be the safest option)
3. I've been blessed with yet another faulty GPU
I'm now contacting Amazon about my card, hopefully the RMA process will go smoothly.
Worst case solution at this point: Drop £650 on a Sonnet III-D enclosure and another £450 on a GTX 980. Hopefully I can sell the SEL and the 780 Ti (the replacement if RMA is successful)
Last thing I would say try a molex powered riser. If that does not work, no need to sell the thunderbolt adapter, you are better off selling the 780 ti and getting the 970 or 980. Both cards use under 200 Watt.
I am running a short board 970 Zotac right now with no issues. Performance on par with the 780 SC ACX it replaced. Both the 970 and 980 can be powered by a DA-2 power brick.
3dmark11 run on laptop internal screen, no OC:

I still have this issue with my AkiTio for OS X. Under heavy load, OS would crash (similar to what you experience). I already posted the other kernel panic log in the previous thread. I can't recreate lowering the power and gpu clock similar to Windows since OS X doesn't have such utility.Tried the following combinations
1. New PSU 650
2. 2 different of Riser
3. AkiTio and Riser are powered form PSU (barrel matted with molex)
I guess am now stuck with an AkiTio that will be used to daisy chain Thunderbolt, and stick with Sonnet III-D.
Or I can send my AkiTio and have someone take a look at it and what needs to be done
What video card are you running?
*780 TI from your signature, so at least we can narrow the problem to cards using 300Watt of power.
Aware of anyone running 780TI with no problems? Maybe different bios version/manufacturer? We can at least make a black list of problematic cards for future reference.

Mark, I see your PSU is not single rail, make sure to get power from different rails for the 6-8 pin, as well as the power for the thunderbolt adapter. The theoretical power limitations per rail for your psu are 12v x 24A, which is less than what your card needs.

I can also run furmark without problem but i got crash while playing a game which use something like 50% of power. My experience with the 290x was similar, it did not even matter if the card was under full load, it would crash at idle if I waited long enough. Works perfectly in my friend's desktop ever since I switched to Nvidia.

I've had this issue running a 290x, sound stutter, black screen. I was unable to get it to run, I ended up switching to a different card, but I always suspected power issues from pcie rail. Does your riser have auxiliary power input? If not, I suggest getting one with a molex connector, and run it that way. Also, make sure that the 6 Pin and 8 Pin power connectors are not piggy backed from the same line.
I had a similar setup, 2013 Macbook (no 750M), Sonnet Echo Express Sel, EVGA 780 ACX SC (non-ti), and had zero issues. The 780 TI uses 90Watt more under full load.

Used my old PE4H v2.4a mini pcie connection and the card works. I guess the OWC Helios is not a good option for Thunderbolt vidock
-
Power supply is fine, I tested it with a desktop supply and same thing.
Am I doing something wrong as far as the procedure for connecting the thunderbolt? I plug in the OWC before I turn it on, and the laptop boots up with no issues, but I only get PCI-PCI devices added in control panel and no unrecognized/vga devices.
-
Still no go. I am running Windows 8 64 UEFI, I'll try Windows 7 as well.
-
I will try that Frula, Thank you.
Hi,Did you keep the case or you have just used the Thunderbolt to PCI adapter out of it?
Cheers
I have pulled both pcb boards from the case, and I was planning on building my own.
-
My setup is as follows:
HP Spectre XT Touchscreen - Thunderbolt port
OWC Helios - found one for good price on ebay
Nvidia GTX 770
The laptop recognizes the OWC as soon as I plug it in, but it will not recognize the video card at all. No unrecognized device, no video device, simply no change in device manager. I am powering the GTX 770 using the OWC power supply + an XBOX 360 203W power adapter . The VGA fans turn on as soon as I turn on the laptop.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Alright, so I guess it is faulty memory. I tried a higher voltage vbios, messed with the memory clock in afterburner. I noticed that changing the frequency it to a certain number clock results in no more artifacts for about 1 second lol.
IS there any way to figure out exactly which ram chip is the problem? I am getting a refund from the seller, but I could offer a low ball amount of money and try to fix it up.

My Frankenstein seems to "work" both with the k5000m and 680m vbios. I installed Windows 7, Optimus enabled results in blue screen, but Optimus disabled allows me to install the 680m driver, without the Windows 8 error. Running 3dmark again.
-
I have successfully flashed the bios to that version. Did your device id update?
Running some benchmarks.
Thank you.

I finally got 3dmark Vantage to run, Graphics Score 16658 . First test had a bunch of artifacts in the form of lines, but only on characters. Thoughts?
-
Running Windows 8 and had forgotten to turn off driver signature verification. Restarted and successfully installed. Thanks for all the help everyone, specially svl7 .
Running some benchmarks and will post updates.

I looked that Information up under Device management, hardware IDs.
-
*EDIT* command "nvflash -5 -6 k5000.rom" worked, but the device ID is unchanged in windows. Does that sound right?
-
There is a SLI connector
Attempting to flash k5000m bios. Fingers crossed.
-
Anything I can do as far as preventing bricking the card if I flash it? Optimus activates in bios, so I will be able to boot it up even if I brick it?
Thanks.

Searched some of the information above, and from what I found, it IS a 680M based on the number on transistors.
Thanks for all the help.

Yes, it does work with the internal monitor (steps to get it working on the forum). To use an external monitor, use the preferred connection on the external video card. External monitor will give you a performance boost over internal monitor.
